They can be so either through imagination that's artistic in it's creation of an entirely new world, story, characters; or it can be visually through the graphics used to render the products of imagination into something visual that all can appreciate. It can also be through music. Some games have powerfully moving music too. All of these are art forms to me.
In my humble opinion, all forms of media are viable art forms (TV, Classical Music, Popular Music, Film, Books, Artwork, Modern Art and indeed, Videogames.) Whether it's down to innovation, storytelling, music, visuals (artistic, NOT technical,) gameplay, or just pure entertainment, there are several videogames that I would readily classify as "art." Anyway, I don't care if SotC/MGS/FF/LoZ is art or not, they're still amazing accomplishments.
Yep I just convinced myself or got convinced that video games are an art form. If a sideways urinal can be art, I believe this mix of music graphics and storyline can be art. If all the seperate elements are art I think the whole must be allowed to be. Isn't art something that makes you feel sensations by definition or something.
To me...art is a mere decoration in which people can gaze upon and try to search some sort of meaning behind it. Games are mere entertainment in which you interact with for the purpose of self satisfaction, escapism, etc. It's a dream you can be a part of outside of your sleep. You can be a hero, villain, anything you could not do in reality. When we focus on the artistic value and try to see games as something to be educated by, it would lose it's purpose.
Art can be anything. Paint can be used to give something a color, or it can be used to draw a painting. Videogames can be just mere entertainment, or they can be art. And who says an arty game can't be entertainment? You need to rephrase your definition of art. Art isn't just the elitist stuff that hangs in dusty museums off white walls with a rope fence around it. . Ico and Shadow of the Collosus are pretty much, art.

I think video games might be art now, but certainly not respected as such. Maybe one day they'll make it.
But even this video showcases the issues: scantily clad girls wielding overlarge swords, overly contrived situations, shallow conflicts... when critiquing films, it's often an insult to say of the film that it was "like watching a video game", and if these games are an example of what we've got, then we're a long way from being respected.

People who watch movies aren't artists either-however movies are still considered artistic. Some games are art-they require artists and shadow of the colossus is a prime example of video game art. Just because gamers aren't artists doesnt mean that games aren't. Do you consider literature art? games have the same right to be art, as they tell stories and evoke emotional responses

True, video games are a form of entertainment, especially more so in older games, but in recent years, the market has demanded the use of artists, designers, and musicians to increase the moral and emotional value conveyed in video games. A movie, a painting, or a song can provoke an emotional response, so can video games, because they use all three elements with interactive value.

I've become a musician thanks to those games. I started to listen to real and fantastic music playing those games. Music that I didn't hear before.
Those games have been my inspiration, and now I'm trying to go in a power metal band as a drummer.

Certainly, art. They can be so either through imagination that's artistic in it's creation of an entirely new world, story, characters; or it can be visually through the graphics used to render the products of imagination into something visual that all can appreciate. It can also be through music. Some games have powerfully moving music too. All of these are art forms to me.

In my humble opinion, all forms of media are viable art forms (TV, Classical Music, Popular Music, Film, Books, Artwork, Modern Art and indeed, Videogames.) Whether it's down to innovation, storytelling, music, visuals (artistic, NOT technical,) gameplay, or just pure entertainment, there are several videogames that I would readily classify as "art." Anyway, I don't care if SotC/MGS/FF/LoZ is art or not, they're still amazing accomplishments.

Yep I just convinced myself or got convinced that video games are an art form. If a sideways urinal can be art, I believe this mix of music graphics and storyline can be art. If all the seperate elements are art I think the whole must be allowed to be. Isn't art something that makes you feel sensations by definition or something.

To me...art is a mere decoration in which people can gaze upon and try to search some sort of meaning behind it. Games are mere entertainment in which you interact with for the purpose of self satisfaction, escapism, etc. It's a dream you can be a part of outside of your sleep. You can be a hero, villain, anything you could not do in reality. When we focus on the artistic value and try to see games as something to be educated by, it would lose it's purpose.

Art can be anything. Paint can be used to give something a color, or it can be used to draw a painting. Videogames can be just mere entertainment, or they can be art. And who says an arty game can't be entertainment? You need to rephrase your definition of art. Art isn't just the elitist stuff that hangs in dusty museums off white walls with a rope fence around it. . Ico and Shadow of the Collosus are pretty much, art.
