@2009Ubuntu I'd still run something like ClamAV, there are plenty of viruses for Linux, unlike what people want to believe (I do say apple is to blame for that one).
Every Anti-virus slows down your computer, it may be a little or a lot but I guarantee whatever Anti-Virus your running slowed down your computer some what. I been using Kaspersky Internet Security for several years now and never had any problems. Everything is fast, and I configured Kaspersky for maximum protection and everything runs good. My computer isn't a high end computer either its decent. After I installed it, there was a minor slow down, but thats to be expected from any Anti-Virus.
I use Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes together; they are pro! I also have Spybot S&D for anti-spyware/adware type things. Never had a problem since, and all of them were free!
... about SSH - secure shell host - i didn't actually get what you mean. If it is possible to hack an SSH passphrase ? yes, it is. but if you configure your ssh server correctly, it gets pretty close to impossible. Using a 4096 bit key to encrypt your password, set SELinux to deny root acess to SSH server and configure IPTables correctly. Linux is and will ever be virus safe. You folks google for 'what is selinux' and you'll get what I mean :)
nickerless557 - do you know what 'heuristics' stands for ? In theory, most known antivirus softwares - avast, avg, norton, kaspersky, avira, mcafee, etc. - use heuristic analysis, but, when it comes to real testing detection rates, most of then fail. If they all used heuristics with a 'blocklist' of actions that programs can't do and, if they do, the av would say they're malware, there would be 100% dettection sucess. About SSH, i'll continue in the next comment
well ur wrong bout one thing norton really doesnt hog cpu anymore they have really imporved there producted but mcafee is actually really a virus and sucks butt it detection rate i low and when you remove it. it doesnt leave your computer is stays and wont leave. but really you gotta try the newer norton prduct bc now there alot light then they use to be bc i remember norton sucked and was a hogger but know it really low on cpu and had a higher detection rate
Symantec Corporate Edition (which is hard to get for a good price) is very good and lacks most of the bloat in most mainstream antivirus products. It has regular updates and has caught every virus that AVG and other freebies have caught......
BUT also catches stuff the other products usually miss. (at least in terms of viruses and trojan horses)
Use something else for spyware and malware. And something else for firewall purposes.
Oh, and by the way... AVG does not use heruistics, wich means it really SUCKS, as well as McAfee, but the McAfee does even worse: They make they're viruses, so they can say they're antivirus is good, cuze it catchs those. But when an international multi-corporation antivirus test runs up open for public, it really sucks! Ask any IT professional about McAfee and hear what they'll say. I'm sorry for saying this, but get to the web... all I said here is true. Try Linux Ubuntu - its free, virus safe
Oh, so I don't know that Linux is based on Unix right ? Ok, so maybe you can tell me exactly why. Is it because of the "journaling" filesystem that Unix uses r maybe it's because of the Operational system infrastructure based on Phyton ?And kid, just for you to know: Linux is and will ever be unvulnerable to ANY kind of MALICIOUS SOFTWARE, and after te release of SSH ( Secure Shell Host, wich is something I dont really belive you know what is), it got even more secure against hacker attacks.
You guys are so pathetic... Have you ever asked yourself why a completely FREE Operational System such as LINUX is completely UNVUNERABLE against any sort of malware ( virus, spyware, rootkits, trojans, worms, adwares, RATs, etc. ) and a product made by a billionare-founded corporation such as Microsoft is so vunerable ? Microsoft Windows (all versions) are vulnerable to attacks even w/ the best antivirus in the world. Only 3% of cybercrimes are caused by viruses. Get Linux Ubuntu - it's free.
nicolaaau: Dude, before you hate, at least get your facts straight. Linux is not 100% bad stuff free. It is a lot safer. Linux is heavily modified Unix. I bet you don't even know that (so is Apple OS) Oh, sorry, am I hurting your brain? Stupid fan boy.
Avast Home Edition, SuperAntiSpyware, SpywareBlaster, MalwareBytes Antimalware, COMODO Firewall, WOT plugin on Firefox, Ad-blocker on Firefox, Sandboxie, Firefox 3.5 browser, Keyscrambler (plus plugin for Firefox) , and connected to a proxy server for anonymity, and practice safe-surfing.
Running quick scans once every 2 days and full scans once every 2 weeks, is this secure?
Thefunnyclown31, AVG cannot protect you from rootkits.
Rootkits are seemingly useful tools that actually copies your computer onto the hacker's computer. AVG cannot remove it,
but only detect it. The Process is hidden, so don't expect to just find the source. (Unless you want to waste your time doing it) Usually you have to take it to a repair shop if you don't have an Anti-Virus.
AVG is highly recommended though, if you would like to remove trojans or other viruses.
I think with free and open source software their are more chances of crappy software and junk. Look at linux its been open source for ever and no one really uses it and their are probably thousands of version out thier. So how will making AV software open source prevent junk? It wont, Companies have to be able to pay programmers to create good software. No Pay haf arse software..
In all due respects, too many security programs may be an overkill, which may cause numerous conflicts and would be difficult to run simultaneously with animated sites. One could run many, but independent of ones utilizing the computer resources for certain purposes; or, one could retire for the night while doing this.
Thanks again, my friend. I would have been lured to buy the Spyzooka, on the strength of: my needs for a compatible software for Windows 98SE operating system and the great advertising promises of "guaranteed" 100 percent seek and destroy of all spyware. I would have purchased anyway without testing the free software.
No, my friend; this is because Windows 98SE, is so archaic, that even the virus crooks will turn a blind eye to such, with their believing that anyone who still uses this operating system will have nothing to steal anyway! (smile).
No, no...my friend, I am just trying to be cynical. Anything is possible, with any OS, even the Apple stuff is not immune.
Thank you, my friend: I do trust your judgement and with this, have verified my suspicions regarding the Spyzooka software. The advertising was just to bold and confident in their guaranteeing of a one-hundred percent seek and destroy of all spyware -- even the top manufactures do not make these claims.
On the "Computer Hope" forum, a member suggested, "Anti-SpyBot" for Windows 98SE. So far, I am happy with this.
Could someone give me some information regarding the anti-spyware called, "SpyZooka," Their advertizing indicated that it can remove 100 percent of all spyware. Is this true? Is it a good program?
Comodo Firewall + Windows Defender (Spybot S&D or a other anti spyware/adware you trust remember this second program is using by if your anti virus cant find the rogue or other)+ Avast 4.8 Home its a good kit its never slow down my test pc its very nice try it out guy
hey actually in vista the firewall and windows defender will stop you if your downloading a virus its cool it did not do that in xp it stopped me 2ice
actually, a lot of people say McAfee sucks. I tried it and it wasn't all that great. Try windows live onecare or panda. Panda Anti virus is not heard of but its really good. and symantech is always a choice. But personally i like onecare, it works seamlessly with windows.
gotta kinda agree with the guy who said trustport dunno if its worth a crap or not but trustport has 4 different scanners in its package norman , bitdefender , grifsoft and ewido . see thats the thingone antivirus is always gonna miss somthing. if you had for you triple ur chnaces of finding it . imagine if u had antivirus software and it had kaspersky scanner ,avast scanner ,avg scanner and nod32 scanner all 4 in one package . now that would be bad ass . i think multiple scanners R da future
AVG works great for me. I used it to wipe out trojans on my girlfriend's computer, she had a virus that appeared to be an actual virus program "Antivirus XP 2008" and removed over 400 infections, yeah the computer was that bad! She uses LimeWire so that's probably where she got infected. I can even use AVG with Traktor DJ Studio which is a HUGE resource hog (easily over 100,000kb when mixing with a midi controller) and it runs great.
She only had the firewall that came with Windows and the trial version of McAfee, I created a notepad file on her desktop with instructions for maintenance, schedules her virus scans/updates and left a bunch of instructions for using P2P networks safely, one of them to do a Bitzi lookup on every file, I'm positive that's how she got her computer infected. Then again it never would've happened if she wasn't downloading copyrighted music :-) But that's another topic
My friend has a similar problem, what should my friend do if her mcafee trial ran out? Can she download another one somewhere? Or does she have to spend money to get a subscription? She doesn't use Lime nor download anything of the web. What do you suggest?
Well your friend can either purchase a key for McAfee which is an okay program and does its job well, or if they're someone like me who's a broke college student (especially in this economy lol) then uninstall McAfee and use the free version of AVG, it covers all the basics, updates daily and as long as they know how to surf the web safely, use Firefox, avoid suspicious links and e-mails/attachments, then they should be fine.
same here i wont install antivirus because they all slow down performance. im very aware of sites i visit, i dont just click anywhere on the web. i 2 have a NAT firwall via router and i find it working well. my system runs great. i use to used nod32 but i found it kept scanning processes all the time. clam win i used once was pretty good, because it doesnt have a real time protections, basically u have it perform the scan when you want. like weekly, at night when your not using it.
Mc.Afee used to be a huge system hog, and not worth the time of day. However, they seem to have it together more with they're latest internet security suite. It updates automatically, in the background, usually while the system is idle, you wont know it's updating till it's finished. It also doesn't hog resources too much. Also, it's protection is fully comprehensive and works. Haven't had a single virus. I get free subscription with my isp. I don't know that i'd pay them, but they're great free
Look, Norton 360 and Kaspersky are basicly for !strong! computers, and i mean it! The basic desktops or laptops cannot stand the big preasure that these two antiviruses cause to them...so, i reccomend Avast! or NOD32....best Antiviruses i know.
kaspersky's has updated until it slowed my computer to a crawl. im trying eset smart security, the nod32 security suite. my computer actually runs now! i can see what a web page looks like, now. then i'll use free spyware doctor to clean up the cookies
Panda Anti-virus. Uses less that half the resources as Norton. Used it two years and the firewall blocked everything. I never had a virus found in a scan for the whole two years. But AVG is good to, even the free versions.
I use Webroot Spysweeper with Antivirus. It is only 50 dollars for the program, and while they do charge for updates, it is cheap and it doesn't slow down the system at all. I don't really trust the freeware/opensource programs because it then allows the hackers to see what is preventing them from putting Trojans on your computer.
Very informative! I myself prefer Windows Live OneCare as my antivirus all around thing. It's good for Windows Vista, and there doesn't seem to be a lost in System Resources.
They may be the two most known, but in an article I read, Symantec was the only software that actually found every virus, etc... that was loaded onto a test machine and protected the machine against it.
@2009Ubuntu I'd still run something like ClamAV, there are plenty of viruses for Linux, unlike what people want to believe (I do say apple is to blame for that one).

GOOD JOB SERUU321!
Both Mcafee, and Norton are Viruses!
98% on names on this page are VIRUSES!
Both Spybot, and AVG are good and free programs ( free to all but people like me who pay $600 a year for term servers)
The only reason Mcafee, and norton out sell Spybot, AVG is because of name. that is the only reason..
I love TrendMicro online scan, but their antivirus software dosn't work.

It's good for Windows Vista, and there doesn't seem to be a lost in System Resources.
ghosty121212 4 years ago
They may be the two most known, but in an article I read, Symantec was the only software that actually found every virus, etc... that was loaded onto a test machine and protected the machine against it.
