ey entren a mi canal y vean (go to my channel and watch) "Las aventuras e infortunios del Hombre Bolsa", tal vez les guste!!! filmado con una (filmed with) D90...
The D90 is very shaky and hard to operate. It's ok on a tripod. Nikon has superior lenses, but the D90 is just not as good at video. A Nikon lens can be put on a Canon HV20 (30 or 40 also) by getting a JAG35 adaptor and the results are really good. Tons of people are making movies with Nikon lenses on Canons now. It's kind of funny. The Canon 7D, T series also are better than the Nikon BUT are still not smooth like the 5D MKII. But you still can't put a Nikon lens on it :P
An Slr is made for taking pictures. be greatful that they threw in Hd video instead of bitching about how its not perfect. Any experienced photographer would know that you want manual focus for more control.
Does CanonT1 really NOT do 24p? WTF? The T2 looks like it does 24fps @ 1080p and 60fps at 720p. All I care about is 720p 24fps as a 3rd HD camera, and a Nikon could make use of all my old lenses. Autofocus? What's that? Never heard of it. guess I don't need it. sort of like training wheels on a motorcycle I guess.
@pf008 You want to compare the $ 1.699 Canon 7D with the R$ 899 Nikon D90 ?? Duh! CapitanComedy, great video! I own a Nikon D90, it's a great camera and i agree, at first, it's kinda hard to get used its videos controls!
Some dslr do better in video capture. The nikon d90 was the first to resent video capture in a dslr, so it is clunky and not perfect. The canon dslr is better due to full customization functions. It also has contrast based auto focus but still not like a camcorder.
I think if someone had a good story that was developed around using stills and short action shots could actually make a nice short film. Of course with the proper editing software as well. FCP. I liked your test footage. Thanks for letting us know what lens you used at what time. You don't get that from a lot of ppl. Thanks again.
Is this the only Nikon that shoots video? Also, I didn't see you test the Tokina 10 -17mm. Did I miss that? I have that lense and love it!! I have Nikon D50 had it for 4 years and need something new.
@pf008 I apologize for not using a camera for the first time correctly! Find someone who knows how to use a production camcorder, and knows how to use a still camera, and then ask them to use one of these horrible clunky DSLR video functions. Enjoy the footage you recieve. I used the camera with the tight zooming and fast motion that I intended to use it for if I purchased it. You're an idiot. Enjoy your Canon DSLR video, which is just going to be the same as what you see here.
The video quality is exactly this, it looks the same on the camera as it does on a computer. "Quality" is a bad word to use. The camera captures color beautifully, it just doesn't capture motion well AT ALL. If you plan to ONLY use a tripod, the D90 might work very well for you.

@radioactivestd It looks like you're saying all 'desktop publisher assholes' have zero 'camera work skills,' which would be kind of a shitty and rude thing to say. But I definitely agree that people wanting autofocus in DSLR video / production cameras are missing something fundamentally important about video. It's a shame, but people will always be stupid.
@CaptainComedy i think it depends on a persons understanding of how autofocus works. Since it not always works as you want, manual focus is of course preferred by many amateur and definitely by most professional photographers or filmmakers.
@Spike2thewest Yeah, I agree. There are parts of this so-called revolution in digital filmmaking that just sicken me, but you can't deny that there must be some people who are legitimately good at it, and wouldn't be as likely to get into it without video mode on a still camera. I wish they'd stop pandering to the dumb crowd and start including more advanced features. That being said, I haven't actually used a video DSLR since I made this video, so maybe they've gotten better. Who knows.
@CaptainComedy Yeah, video has gotten wayyyy better on DSLRs since this video. This video is shitty, like when you move the camera and it stretches, so awful. Canon t2i's and the 1D, 5D, and 7d, are good video cameras.
my brother had a d80 and some guy traded him his d200 for it ? i really like the d300 and the new d300s although for a 1000 cheaper you can get this wich feels alot more like a semi pro than a plastic'y dslr- i was in besy buy and i went from the d3000 when i walked in to the d90 in about a min,,,,,,,,
the D90 is a really nice cam, though the video functionality on the cheaper Canon Eos 500 is far better. I also had to decide between both cams, which were by far my absoulte favorites, but Canon has quite some advantages (not only video) and higher price of the D90 simply does not justify. But with none of both you can go wrong!
thats a point of view and taste. I also find the D90 better designed externally, feels better in hands, but technically it does not match the Eos 500D. And I am not explicitely talking about the video function, that is rather a "toy-fun-function". Cheers
Your 500D is an entry-level SLR. I'm glad you're happy with your purchase but reputable sites like dpreview give the D90 higher marks in EVERY category. The video mode is 'better' on the canon but it only shoots at 20 fps at 1080 which sucks. At 720, the canon has a 6 fps advantage which I wish the D90 had, but you don't buy these cameras for the novelty of video mode. You have slightly more megapixels but you also have a lot more noise at 'walk around' ISOs. The canon isn't in the same league.
in theory, the XXXD series used to be the entry level for canon, but not anymore, since the EOS 1000D came out. Technically, D90 and Eos 500D are quite the same level, though the D90 does not really have it's own class, it rather a inbetween thing due to it's higher quality construction materials (I mentioned previously too) fitting to the Dxxx class, but outputs of the new "lower" Dxxxx class. The Iso point is true, Nikon has done a better processing there, but Canons follows tightly.
it's not like that canon 500D has bad results in the ISO and Noise area. Lets put things like they are. Canon beats every model and brand in this iso level, except the nikons. On the other side, Nikons do more processing on the fotos to reach this iso result, destroying more details than the Canons. So its always a positive and negative point arround. By the way, dpreview gave both cams 8.5 points on Image quality, so it's not true that it favoured the nikon D90 over the 500D in this aspect.
Right, I saw the 8.5 rating after I wrote that, but those pics were taken at low ISOs. Low ISOs are not realistic all the time and having lower noise at higher ISOs is a huge plus. But that's what you get when you spend more money. If you bought the 50D, you'd see a difference, but you'd have also spent a lot more for those differences. In the end, you pay for what you get and IMO, you can't go wrong with canon or nikon.
currently I am quite satisfied with the 500D. The 40D uses the same sensor than the 500D for example, but offers other additional settings and grip due to it's size.. But if in some time I would not be satisfied anymore with it's results, and wanting to change to full format class, I would definitely change to Nikons then. Because in higher class, there is no way arround superiority of Nikon Image quality and clarity, at least at the moment.
well not yet and not the next 2 years, but I am hanging arround some time with entry level now. Had the 350D, 450D and now 500D, all beautiful cams! if I would change to Full frame in 2 years or so, wouldn't do to "professional" class. I would be glad with a D300 already ;P
Yes! "If you do not already have an investment in lenses or a predetermined brand preference however, we do not hesitate to highly
recommend the Nikon D90 as a better solution for the enthusiast photographer compared to the Canon Rebel T1i / EOS 500D. Considering the relatively small price difference between the two camera bodies
(Canon Rebel T1i body $999 CAN, Nikon D90 body MSRP $1119 CAN, April 09), the Nikon D90 comes across as a bit of a bargain."
you shouldn't get the d90 just for video obviously. it wasn't made for this sole purpose. if you want video, get something else that's made to shoot videos!!
of course, the video thingy is just a trend and fun gimmick. But also regarding the foto abilities, in almost all tests I have read, where both cams are being compared, the Canon EOS 500D wins... even if it's only a slight advantage. But even I fear repeating myself, both cams are great, I have an Eos 500D myself, but was near to buy the D90 before. Just the higher price did not justify and then the 500D came out... ;D
If you go for a Canon 500D or D90, it will never be a mistake.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Exactly, i do NOT want to do video, no serious photographer want a video feature on his dSLR, specially if it is as bad as it actually is, this is as stupid as the megapixel race, only makes the product more expensive but not better
me to. I think it's simply a good "add-on" I mean for example I want a camcorder AND a dslr...and If I buy them seperately it would cost alot. so instead I'd prefer to buy like a d90 that has both! :) 2in1! I mean I don't do serious filming but it's good to have for when needed. that's my opinion of course...
I have a D90 and the Vid Qual is insane The audio is awesome, way better audio and vid that any other Video camera out there anly draw backs, Manual zoom in video and pretty bulky but is worth it all the $ you pay for it will be very pleasantly suprised with the Quality.
The audio is okay, but a little tinny. The camera definitely isn't the best you can get in terms of video, but it is one of the best video cameras built into a still camera. My HD-110 is much better for serious video. The upside to the D90 is the fact that you can use all your lenses without a problem. The HD-110 only really takes a few lenses built for it.
I don't think YouTube had HD when I uploaded this. Even if they did, I didn't make it HD when I rendered the final video, and all the original footage is gone now.
Jimmy does Ritz have Canon 5D MK II's to test out there? I definitely wouldn't get one any time soon.. however there was a contest to win one every now and then but there was an entry fee.
Hey I got a SDHC card of 4GB but it's the normal version (not extreme or ultra)... Is this good enough for the D90, or won't I be able to shoot pictures at 4.5fps or shoot a HD vid
It's just fine. I have an 8GB SDHC card, a normal one from Toshiba, I think. I used it to film all of this. I'm pretty positive the D90 can't produce images or video fast enough to take advantage of the extreme or ultra cards.
haha! 24f is the way to go! hahah and with the low aperture is awesome.. very cinematic.. I would get it just to shoot at 24f and use diff lenses...! Set it with a steadcam and presto...
thanks for that.. i think im gona sell my d60 and get one now haha. its not bad except for the wobble when panning. ig uess that has somethign to do with the sensor scanning images vertically
It is NOT a video camera... don't expect perfect video from a still picture camera. If you want to do video, get a video camera. Sony is still the market leader in video cameras, despite their anal attitudes to customers.
Im actually quite impressed with the video quality!
lol They actually let u guys have that camera for 10 minutes? :P and keep switching the lenses? nice Did u put ur own memory card? is that how u got the footage? XD :P Nice stuff! :D
I have a question. Okay...The camera that the sells man was holding, that was yours....what is the name of it? And how much was it? I heard you say it is 300 dollars now. Please reply....I am looking for a GREAT camera, in a cheap price. Thanks.
I think I was talking about the lens he was holding. The camera I use is a Nikon D80, which is a great entry-level camera, a step below the D90. I got it over 2 years ago, and the camera still dutifully takes photos without a problem. It's something like $800 with the good bundled lens, and I think it's a great deal.
You did of course get a model release from all the Ritz guys and customers, right? Nah, I didn't think so... Love the D90 video works best with a fluid head on a tripod to eliminate a lot of the rolling shutter effects. You can lock exposure also to keep the camera from constantly readjusting aperture or shutter.
It's Cloverfield! Watch to the end to see the monster.
: ) This is one of the best D90-test videos on youtube.. if not THE best.
It's amusing to see your friend asking to go to eat in different ways throughout the video... xD Funny. I like watching this vid once in a while. Gah, still haven't got the camera D:
Haha I went to Burger King before going there today. I knocked my camera on the ground while I was there as well... luckily the only thing is that the flash needs to be pressed in with more force to click in.
I got my first good camera a Nikon D90 with a Nikon 18-105 and a Nikon 70-300 lense. Could you reccomend a professional lense. These take nice pics but don't seem like professional lenses at all.

my brother had a d80 and some guy traded him his d200 for it ? i really like the d300 and the new d300s although for a 1000 cheaper you can get this wich feels alot more like a semi pro than a plastic'y dslr- i was in besy buy and i went from the d3000 when i walked in to the d90 in about a min,,,,,,,,

Is just me or this camera has the annoying "Jell-o" effect like the cellphones videos?

I bought my D90 after I watched this video long time ago. Still happy with the Movie mode. Thanks. :P

Glad you liked it! I love the camera too, I'm thinking of picking one up to replace my dying D80! :D
CaptainComedy 2 years ago
do you recommend the 18-105mm kit lense, or should i just get he body and purchase a better lense?
chingvang559 2 years ago 3
the D90 is a really nice cam, though the video functionality on the cheaper Canon Eos 500 is far better. I also had to decide between both cams, which were by far my absoulte favorites, but Canon has quite some advantages (not only video) and higher price of the D90 simply does not justify. But with none of both you can go wrong!
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
The D90 has much better ergonomics though.
GCSMAD 2 years ago 2
thats a point of view and taste. I also find the D90 better designed externally, feels better in hands, but technically it does not match the Eos 500D. And I am not explicitely talking about the video function, that is rather a "toy-fun-function". Cheers
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
For the money, you cannot beat the D90.
bluemystic7501 2 years ago 2
you can... and for even less money.
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
Your 500D is an entry-level SLR. I'm glad you're happy with your purchase but reputable sites like dpreview give the D90 higher marks in EVERY category. The video mode is 'better' on the canon but it only shoots at 20 fps at 1080 which sucks. At 720, the canon has a 6 fps advantage which I wish the D90 had, but you don't buy these cameras for the novelty of video mode. You have slightly more megapixels but you also have a lot more noise at 'walk around' ISOs. The canon isn't in the same league.
bluemystic7501 2 years ago 11
in theory, the XXXD series used to be the entry level for canon, but not anymore, since the EOS 1000D came out.
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
it's not like that canon 500D has bad results in the ISO and Noise area.
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
Right, I saw the 8.5 rating after I wrote that, but those pics were taken at low ISOs. Low ISOs are not realistic all the time and having lower noise at higher ISOs is a huge plus. But that's what you get when you spend more money. If you bought the 50D, you'd see a difference, but you'd have also spent a lot more for those differences. In the end, you pay for what you get and IMO, you can't go wrong with canon or nikon.
bluemystic7501 2 years ago
currently I am quite satisfied with the 500D.
D700 must be a real jewel...
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
Entry level to a full frame professional camera? That's a big jump. Might want to jump up to the D90 first or the D300 ;)
bluemystic7501 2 years ago
well not yet and not the next 2 years, but I am hanging arround some time with entry level now. Had the 350D, 450D and now 500D, all beautiful cams! if I would change to Full frame in 2 years or so, wouldn't do to "professional" class. I would be glad with a D300 already ;P
PatagonianWarrior 2 years ago
yah if your looking for a canon to compete with the d90 its either the 40 or 50d

@bluemystic7501
(Canon Rebel T1i body $999 CAN, Nikon D90 body MSRP $1119 CAN, April 09), the Nikon D90 comes across as a bit of a bargain."

what a terrible video, i would hate to get this camera.
ahernra 2 years ago
you shouldn't get the d90 just for video obviously. it wasn't made for this sole purpose. if you want video, get something else that's made to shoot videos!!
limalison921 2 years ago
of course, the video thingy is just a trend and fun gimmick.

Exactly, i do NOT want to do video, no serious photographer want a video feature on his dSLR, specially if it is as bad as it actually is, this is as stupid as the megapixel race, only makes the product more expensive but not better
tit0martinez 2 years ago
i do.
sully2909 2 years ago 4

I have a D90 and the Vid Qual is insane The audio is awesome, way better audio and vid that any other Video camera out there anly draw backs, Manual zoom in video and pretty bulky but is worth it all the $ you pay for it will be very pleasantly suprised with the Quality.
dwrocker1 2 years ago
The audio is okay, but a little tinny. The camera definitely isn't the best you can get in terms of video, but it is one of the best video cameras built into a still camera. My HD-110 is much better for serious video. The upside to the D90 is the fact that you can use all your lenses without a problem. The HD-110 only really takes a few lenses built for it.
CaptainComedy 2 years ago
How come the vid isn't in HD ?
TopGear6666 2 years ago
I don't think YouTube had HD when I uploaded this. Even if they did, I didn't make it HD when I rendered the final video, and all the original footage is gone now.
CaptainComedy 2 years ago
Jimmy does Ritz have Canon 5D MK II's to test out there? I definitely wouldn't get one any time soon.. however there was a contest to win one every now and then but there was an entry fee.
InvalidUniverse 2 years ago
Hey I got a SDHC card of 4GB but it's the normal version (not extreme or ultra)... Is this good enough for the D90, or won't I be able to shoot pictures at 4.5fps or shoot a HD vid
135Weird531 2 years ago
It's just fine. I have an 8GB SDHC card, a normal one from Toshiba, I think. I used it to film all of this. I'm pretty positive the D90 can't produce images or video fast enough to take advantage of the extreme or ultra cards.

image quality on the D90 is great but the video feature really sucks, these waves totally mess up the video
tit0martinez 2 years ago
It is NOT a video camera... don't expect perfect video from a still picture camera. If you want to do video, get a video camera. Sony is still the market leader in video cameras, despite their anal attitudes to customers.

I have a question. Okay...The camera that the sells man was holding, that was yours....what is the name of it? And how much was it? I heard you say it is 300 dollars now. Please reply....I am looking for a GREAT camera, in a cheap price. Thanks.
PhotogenicKid 2 years ago
I think I was talking about the lens he was holding. The camera I use is a Nikon D80, which is a great entry-level camera, a step below the D90. I got it over 2 years ago, and the camera still dutifully takes photos without a problem. It's something like $800 with the good bundled lens, and I think it's a great deal.

You did of course get a model release from all the Ritz guys and customers, right? Nah, I didn't think so... Love the D90 video works best with a fluid head on a tripod to eliminate a lot of the rolling shutter effects. You can lock exposure also to keep the camera from constantly readjusting aperture or shutter.

do you have to use manual focus? seems like you (or if it's AF; the camera) drops in and out of focus at time.
