UFO means Unidentified Flying Object, it could be a flock of birds, a missing metallic debris falling from outer space, or a new atmospheric phenomena yet to be understood, not necessarily alien. I think honestly that the alleged government alien cover-up is required in order to properly address any potential threat to humanity. For me aliens are not either good or bad, but I suspect rather neutral. They look at us with bewilderment and that is scary enough to me. We must kept vigilant anyway.

I don't like how people tend to look at people who think there is life beyond that of Earth. We've explored less that 1% of the Universe and our technology is still in the stages of growing to more and more advanced tech. @loeghat No proof for you. I've found adequate proof. Others have with access to ET artifacts or enough Grey matter & the willingness to withhold judgment until they have studied the the issue in depth, as many of us have to recognize this deeper reality. Perhaps your missing one ?

If they were malevolent then surely they would have wiped us out long ago. Humans are dangerous idiots in comparison to any life form that could travel many light years in a short time frame. You said it! It isn't openly discussed cuz it has been successfully suppressed psychologically, using ridicule and embarrassment. And just so ya know, most major conspiracy theories (HAARP, Global Warming, 911, Personalized Global Surveillance,) are just as legit as the E.T. existence. The E.T. existence will be exposed to the our nation like it has been to most other major countries recently. Look up The Disclosure Project. There is a lot more of US out there blowing the whistle!

I have had a close encounter with ahovering orb. It is documented in my picture video.
What I saw and learned from it, is confirmed by Dr. Edgar Mitchell.
It first appeared as a whitish, silvery ball, and after about a month it cam hovering by, very close, and was transparent so I could see it's inner structure.
It reminded me of Liquid Chrystal Displays, and I'm quite sure that what we know as LCD is reverse engineered, and the taxpayers payed for it.

A particular profession has nothing to do with the behaviour to jump on the UFO/conspiracytainment fairy-tale bandwagon and making business on the expense of fooling people. Remember, Mitchell drove two moon missions, then he retired. So he needed money as time went by. And snake-oil business is easy. If the guy knew something extraordinary, he told it. He is a scientist and he knows exactly what a proof is and ordinary people don't care about. ;-))
