Great video. You really captured the spirit of the time in a way that resonates. For a version sung in the same Haywire Harry McClintock style that captures the spirit of our times, check out the "Big Old Federal Government" video on YouTube. You'll get a kick out of it, I'm certain.
In 4 years a Republican will be back in power. That's my thoughts on Obama. He's just a man, nothing more. He reminds me of Jimmy Carter. We'll see how things turn out.
more like james brown hahaha just messin more like george bush ahahh phew that was a good one but seriously mccain is way better than obama because now every black guy i know is getting all errogant and shit and they are talking shit so yea pretty gay
Lol, it's a shame that McCain lost. Maybe if he'd had a team that would fight and work as hard for the campaign as Obama won, he might just have won. But his campaign people were shit, and afterwards they had the balls to say it was all Palin's fault, even though it was the campaign's fault for losing the election. It's a shame though, because Obama will be a terrible president, mark my words. This recession will not be over in the next year, I think it will last up to 3 years and get even worse
Come on, lighten up and just enjoy this great song.
I know you may not be crazy about Obama but just give him a chance before you cut him down; the poor guy just started! If he turns out not to be a good leader, he will be replaced in time.
Hahahaha! Agreed. This song is so great. Its so fun to listen and sing to also. How can anyone argue with this song, how friendly it is? The lyrics are so creative and fantasty like. The Big Rock Candy Mountains, where the jails are made of tine, and you can walk right out as soon as you are in, and they hung the jerk who invented work.
Its just so friendly and creative. Maybe my favorite song of all time, and I'm 15 years old!
this songs about a hobo, lol, if you listen carefuly it's all the things hobo's hate, there are pitbulls that cant bite, free stuff, policemen that cant run, and train men that cant see them hitch rides on the train, it's great XD
I just did some reading up on the history of songs like this, and it's interesting to find out they were used to tempt children into running away to be used by a "Mister" who would use the child to steal, beg and for other unpleasent things. This version is heavily edited from Harry's original collected lyrics which were a lot bawdier.
this isnt the right version. this is the second version. theres another one where the beggining of the song is another thing.i rememeber when i was little my pawpaw use to sing this to me,and this version makes my ears bleed its so terrible!
As a descendant of Harry McClintock (Not McKlintock), I can indeed confirm that this is not about drugs but just about a hobo's paradise. He was not at all a druggie, and the candy doesn't mean meth. It's just an innocent song about every hobo's dream.
to clear up some misconceptions, this song is about a hobo's idea of paradise, and dates back to the 1890s. man would not trip on LSD until about 50 years later, when Albert Hoffman accidentally discovered this amazing chemical.
first of all, LSD was invented in 1948 so they aint talking about it in this song, 2nd these poor hobos are probly talking about north carolina or somthing
actually...the song is about the hoboes that used to try to snag kids to do their begging for them. the song was actually written by Harry McKlintock when he was a kid. there is an old recording of an interview with him. you should check it out! ;D
Wow! I'm really impressed. A lot of stupid people have tried to comment on this.
Candy is actually Ecstasy(MDMA). For the person who thought it was Blow(cocaine).
The song is as said by someone else is about a Paradise for travelers(hobos as most of you put it). It's not even in fact about drugs at all. Just booze and cigarettes and a place to lay your head in peace. That's all.
Mullens87 was pretty much spot on except for one small mistake.
Let me be forward....any idiot...modern day shallow ....that thinks this is about meth...needs to put the pipe down...and get real...this is far from that....and that frankly makes me sad...and sick...a beautiful song...let's make it ghetto...please.....
Methamphetamine was first synthesized from ephedrine in Japan in 1893 by chemist Nagayoshi Nagai.[3] In 1919, crystallized methamphetamine was synthesized by Akira Ogata via reduction of ephedrine using red phosphorus and iodine. The related compound amphetamine was first synthesized in Germany in 1887 by Lazăr Edeleanu. --Wikipedia :P
Existing and "being around" are two different things: the stuff had been made, but it was not widely used recreationally aywhere near the time this song was written. At any rate, aside from the flimsy rock=meth association, there's nothing remotely relating to crystal meth in the entire song. The song is about a hobo's idea of paradise.
The song was written in at least 1897. Maybe even earlier than that. Crystal meth may have been created around the same time, but I doubt it was popular in America back then.
This song is about a Hobos idea of paradise. If you are down with the hobo lingo then you would understand all of the lyrics.
Like a"Railroad bull" was someone who was hired to throw hobos off the trains.
Everyone wants to be a hobo deep down thats why this song is liked by just about everyone.

You are a true idiot and probably should look in an mirror and make fun of what you see... to think that this is about crystal meth, means you are totally clueless and ignorant
A hobo (good source for yay) introduces a couple kids to a big rock candy mountain (pile of crystal meth) where everything is mixed up because that's what crystal meth does to you.
If your point was to make any logical sense wouldn't this have to do with crack cocaine. Seeing as cocaine is called candy sometimes and crack is frequently referred to as rock. Nonetheless you are an ignoramus and the song was written in at least 1928 (first record of any sheet music) and has nothing to do with any drugs but simply a hobo's paradise.
seeing that pot of stew makes me want my mothers stew. so delicous....*drool*
and so folks, this is what happens when you haven't eaten any real food for about 2 days.you start WANTING HEALTHY AND REAL FOOD INSTEAD OF SNACKY CAKES!
Just to educate a little, this is a hobo song whith many references to the hobo way of life (especialy the railroad bulls, ie the train police or however there called now a days...)look into it it has a great story behind it...
