Nice work Joe, Could you help with a comprehensive list of equipment for making kitchen cabinetry. I'm looking at setting up a wood shop as a hobby. Thanks
I’m sad to post this thread, but Joseph Fusco passed away on May 18th 2010. I’m not sure of the details of his passing, but he had two stints back in 2007 and his passing was sudden so I assume it was heart related.
What is your opinion about using the Kreg pockethole system? I built the cabinetry for a 9 x 4 walk-in closet and it turned out beautiful, no glue what-so-ever and strong as can be.
It would be less expensive if you had the skill or at least the willingness to "try" at your expense and the tools needed to make them. Birch is a good wood, but can be difficult to stain. In your case the fact you want a darker stain works in your favor the tougher the wood is to stain the better it looks dark ;-). As far as "what's next" just watch them all ;-) good luck.
Joe I love your vids, but I got lost after watching the 3rd. I don't know which follows. I would love to do my kitchen. Would it be cheaper to make my own cabinets or buy them? and if so I hear that the best wood is Birch is this true? and can this wood be stained into a dark chocolate walnut color.
Joe I don't know if you would agree or not but one of the huge benefits of building your own cabinets is you can make them out of plywood. This adds a very small cost to the total project. Plywood will cost maybe 100 dollars more than particle board for the whole kitchen. Some of the stuff I have assembled for other people's kitchens out of particle board...what can I tell you, I felt as if it was going to fall apart in my hands. Especially with those quick assemble systems.
Hi Joe! from London England , These are great videos! I have the festool saw fantastic and the c12 also fantastic! Next i get the mini dust extraction... thats the way I build kitchen units too , usually I router a rebate at the back for a sheet of 9mm mdf it adds a lot to the square and rigidity , when is part 6 of the cabinet series coming....! regards john
Hi great work and very informative. Can't wait to see the rest of the series and see the finish kitchen :). Keep up the good work and once your finish I follow your steps and start remodeling my kitchen. Thanks for Canada
really helpful, really informative. best video series of the kind I've seen. quick question, what would you do if you were to have one side of a cabinet at the end of the row visible? would you still use the screws?
Great video series. Can't wait to see the rest of them (i.e. door making etc). I looked at you site and you do superb work. Keep up the good work on the video series.
I guess you mean a painted white cabinet. If so, either would work well, but if you went with a maple box I look for C3 as the grade. Now I hope I understood your question correctly ;-)
Great video series! The 'cutting on the flat' particularly helped me. Did you say orbital screw doesn't need predrilling? I looked it up on yahoo to get a better look at it, but nothing came up.
Great videos Joe. Like the simple yet functionality of these units. Are you planning to post further progress on this series, ie doors and drawers, glide and hinge installations?
Quality product?? You don't even have backs on your cabinets!

Joe, can I use nail, instead of screw?
syahir80 3 years ago
syahir80,
In my experience you shouldn't use nails in place of screws, they have difference holding properties. So stick with the screws ;-)
joefusco1960 3 years ago
I can wait to see the finish product, I'm planning and learning something to do with my new house. This video give me a lot....

Joe whats the name of screws you use
smelt11 3 years ago
smelt11,
The screw are 2" square drive auger tipped wood screws. They also have a few burs on the head to help them countersink.
That's the best I have for a name ;-)

wetkenny,
I'm working on the video what show just what you asked, now only if I get sometime to finish it ;-).
I still use screws but they are filled and a strip of edge banding is applied around the plywood and a finished end panel is hen applied over it.

Zunapoli,
I said it was auger tip screws that don't need to be pre-drilled. Sorry about that some time mumble ;-).
Hey but I'm glad you like the vid. Give it a rating if you have some time.
Thanks Joe.
