  • My question is, if it can't restore you're eyesight back to normal altogether, then what is the point of having continuous flashes?

  • @MachinimakerStudios If the flashes are continuous, they are no longer flashes but a changed state which you can dip in and out of, which is how 'normal' eyesight functions

  • does it really works?? Please response to me...

I have minus 9 and i really depressed about my sight

  • hello, i had an operation last april 20, 2011 for an alternating esotropia. right now, i can see that my eyes became exotropic. and when i move my eyes to right, my right eye would move outside while my left doesn't and when i move my eyes to the left, my left eye also does the same thing like my right eye.. if i will do the bates method, can it help me with my problem?

  • @Joenaimah Bates method helps with any functional problem in that it helps you to use your eyes as they evolved to be used. Relaxation, practising with the imagination, strengthening your awareness of movement - all these will help you to build a better working relationship between your eyes and your brain.

  • hello, is this method works for astigmatism as well?

  • Hi you will see better if you dont lean your head forward or cock your head back. Instead just raise your chest and tuck your chin in.

See my channel on how to achieve 20/20 and attain perfect posture.

    Thankyou

  • I enjoy the sunning exercise -which isn't always easy on dark winter days :(

  • Hello again.I just finished reading the bates book and i have been doing exercises for months. Now i have flashes of vision and sometime i have it at night. When i walk or when i see smth i stretch my eyes and i see improvment. Its the same when your finish palming that you see improvment for 1 or 2 second but i can hold it longer now.I dont know what to do now.Should i keep the flash longer as i can or do something else??And can you regain your vision when you see flashes of vision?

  • @TreeofRegeneration That's great! Rather than focusing your attention on keeping the clear vision, focus on keeping the state of mind that produces it. Sort of laid-back and alert. If you keep going back to shifting and swinging, that should help to fix the state of mind.

  • Can you do this while still having your glasses on?

And may I ask if this works for severely myopic people?

  • @1Bored3 While you wear glasses, your vision is locked at the level of myopia for which the glasses are prescribed. So you need to take them off to parctise Bates method. What do you mean by severely myopic? If you're something like minius 8, you might find it more difficult to get into Bates and notice improvement without a teacher to help you. Minus three or four, easier.

  • Now that I have recently turned 41, and I have been spending an enormous amount of time on facebook and youtube... staring at the screen without moving... my ability to focus on items up close has degraded, and in a relatively short period of time, but it certainly is worse when I am tired or feel eye strain. 20:20 vision... here I come! Thank you so very much for this amazing video. The panning was awesome, especially the closeup showing the automatic micro adjustments.

  • I knew there was a way to restore eyesight. I did variations of these techniques years ago when I was at technical school. I was so intense with my studies that I would get enormous eye strain and my eyes started to get blurry. So as a way to combat this I learned how to type with my eyes closed... just as I am doing now. In a very short period of time my eyesight restored itself.

  • Can you reach with Bates method 10/10 in eye tests ?? Please answer me as soon as possible..

  • Excellent video. Thank you so much!

  • Being a passenger in a vehicle and looking out a side window will give the eyes the same rapid movement?

  • @dedred5 Yes - and if you look through the front windshield, to one side, you can watch the road streaming behind the edge of the windshield. But the video of the eye movement was just to demonstrate. What you would look for would be a sense of movement which you can recall with your eyes closed. You don't try to make your eyes shift.

  • This is so amazing! Thank you! Central fixation and swinging between words while reading is sooo helpful! I can read without glasses now!!

  • This is very helpful. Thank you for producing it. One of the best of youtube. However, there are still some things that are difficult to understand. What do you mean when you say, "think about the movement?" Do mean, just perceive teh panning? Or, actually look at the objects in the visual field as you pan? How often should one practice this technique? And, for how long? If these things were explained more clearly, I might be inclined to purchase the DVD. Thanks for your reply.

  • @milkphish2 'Think about the movement 'is meant to direct your attention away from the actual objects that you see, and towards the sensation of panning. If you try to look at the objects you'll find that it interrupts the sense of movement. Practise as long as you can until just before you get tired/bored. This may mean two swings or twenty or a hundred. If it feels restful, keep doing it - if not, stop and have another go later.

  • how long should you do this for

  • Could you offer your DVD for download? That would be great :)

  • Hello, Ma'am

I'm 24 years old and I have myopia, my vision might be 20/70 or something... Does the long swing help myopics? I can't read or recognize faces from afar... when I speak of reading, the letters in the blackboard in college ... or faces of friends who are rather far...

  • @therefuter yes, long swing ,short swing, palming, sunning all help myopia

  • Thank you - I have known of the long swing but you explained it in a way that makes far more sense to me now. This raises the value of practicing the long swing with my mind's eye! Thanks again.

  • @tobeinformed Exactly - it's just as valuable to imagine the world moving round you as it is to see it, because you are training your conscious mind to relax and pay attention to movement.

  • Thank you - I have known of the long swing but you explained it in a way that makes far more sense to me now. This raises the value of practicing the long swing with my mind's eye! Thanks again.

  • Your youtube name is a trip.

  • does this help with lazy eye? like an eye that is not straight but you can see from it.

  • @ladamadelcaribe Yes, but I would recommend that you make a field divider (see me video about it) and wear it while you swing. The Brock string can also help. I think I posted a video about binocularity featuring the Brock string.

  • You certainly have very healthy, clear looking eyes.

  • @HappyHag Thanks for your wonderful instruction. Reading words is always harder than plain objects, should I centrally fixate on each word or each letter for better clarity? And will using negative glasses for driving and other distance use during the day set my progress back too much?

  • @msmerriful When you're practising central fixation (shifting), shift between two points continually. You can use a point at the beginning and end of a word, or you can use points on an individual letter, such as the two ends of the letter s. When reading, it's better to use swinging, taking your attention along the row of words along the bottom edges of the letters and sensing the backwards movement of the row. Glasses for driving won't be a problem.

  • @HappyHag focusing on the movement does help a lot but I think my blinking may be too hard and too fast-almost like a nervous habit, any ideas on how to keep the blinking more natural? I also find that swinging my head a little while reading with the eyes helps the focus

  • @msmerriful Moving your head while you read is a good technique. I think if blinking feels strained, don't blink, just let your eys close completely for a second while you take a deep breath. It's just a way of taking your mind off constantly trying to see things clearly.

  • @HappyHag thank you for sharing your wisdom and sorry for my poor posting skills on here. so glad I found you, this is truly inspiring and life-changing. I'll let you know when my vision stays clear, hopefully someday!

  • Bates method has been very helpful for me past few months but what do I do when I am able to focus clearly while reading or seeing objects at a far distance and then I notice things getting blurry again, I try to blink few times but the clarity does not come back quickly again, it takes a while for me to swing and fixate centrally. is this normal?

  • Comment removed

  • @msmerriful yes, it does take a while, and you just need to be patient and keep doing what you do. Sometimes blinking wil do it, sometimes you may need to refocus your attention and awareness by thinking about the movement or closing your eyes to imagine a particular part of the object swinging. The clear episodes get longer with practice and patience.

  • Its really very helpful video for me , but mam , is long swing only the excercise which could help in improving my eyesight fast.I am doing this and other similar Bates exercises.I have -8 in both eyes which i need to get rid off.

  • @roserise4 Long swing is not the only one. Do you also practise palming and shifting using memory and iimagination? Try not to put pressure on yourself to get 'quick' results, because that creates more strain!

  • @HappyHag thanks mam, i am highly obliged for your instant reply. yeah i do palming and circular motions of eye and crossing of eyes to view the tip of nose and the other excercises suggested by Bates .I really hope i improve my vision from -8.

  • @roserise4 Moving your eyes and crossing them are not Bates techniques. Watch my other videos if you want to get a better idea of what Bates method is about.

  • @HappyHag Oh , is it , i thought those are some among the bates exercises but yeah will surely watch your other videos for perfect guidance.Thanks.

  • Exceptional video. I am just discovering this because i refused stronger glasses that strained my eyes. I am in the process of reading Dr. Bates book and am finding it fascinating. Thank you so very much for sharing this video, it is very nicely done

  • @AM2M

    Thanks for your kind comments!

  • thnkz for sharin bates methods on youtube. your a beautiful being happyhag god bless :)

  • Thanks AWOL, I hope you find them useful!

  • thnkz for sharing happyhag:) does this method help with amblyopia(lazy eye) ? i have it in my left eye. i can see color and thats it. can yu share more exersizes w me pls.

  • Amblyopia is a topic in itself. You can try all the Bates techniques, swinging, shifting, imagination work, extra stimulation of the lazy eye by for example flapping your hand to the side of your face. Also, try covering the good eye and just go around touching things, guessing what they are, how big they are, how far away etc. This might stimulate your brain to pay more attention to the lazy eye.

  • ohw, nd the eye movement that starts on 5.26 is called an optokenetic nystagmus or train nystagmus. A perfectly normal reaction of your eyes when moving around. When we look we focus on something, try to get a good image off it, try to follow it. (the slow movement off the eye) but when that something goes out of your visual side your eyes tend to focus on something new that is within the visual field, causing a rapped movement back. you see this by people starring out off the train or car.

  • We do not try to follow anything. You are not understanding the point here. The rapid movement of the eye is generated unconsciously. This is the whole point about strain - if you try to make your eyes track, you will slow down these movements which allow a rapid sequence of information to reach your brain.

  • @HappyHag

no, you clearly misunderstand. It's impossible for people not to fixate on something. the OKN is just a unconsious movement you can't ignore. Just like you hear. You can't suddenly stop hearing cause you want so. same thing for the OKN, it's in our genes. with strain you cannot suppres this OKN. The OKN is needed in order to survive,in order to bring your eyes fast to the place that is needed. it's automaticly, you can't slow this movement down.

  • I can demonstrate for you that it is possible to slow down these movements.

  • what is this?doesn't everybody know that the blurr you experience by myopia or hyperopia is just that the eye is to short or too long. you can't train that away. You need a lens to let the light focus more anterior (case of hyperopia) in the eye or posterior(case of myopia) so you find a sharp image on the retina.Hyperopia you can correct yourself a bit by accommodating(That strain she told about) your lens constantly strains to try to break the light different most commonly resulting in headache

  • I think it's dangerous to go by 'what everybody knows'. Do you really think that a ball of jelly surrounded by strong muscles is never going to change shape when the muscles tighten?

  • @HappyHag

ok,so clearly not everybody knows.I don't think you understand the working of the extraocular muscles.when your looking forward the muscles are pulling equil to the globe, when you want to look in a specific direction, muscles tighten, others flex(contralateral/ipsilateral)in order to move your eyes to a specific area. they won't harm your visus cause first of all this goes in harmony, controled by your brain and secondly cause you only look with your macula,no muscles attached there!

  • How do you know the extraocular muscles always work in a balanced way? Harmony depends on your state of mind. You can have unbalanced tension in your jaw, for example, if you are anxious. How do you know for sure this doesn't also happen with the eyes?

  • Thank you for your insights about the Bates method. As an optometrist I watched your video with great interest. I have some theories about this method and your input helped me make logical sense of it. The concept of letting the eyes relax is very interesting and I think it could be used in practice. I have had patients who come in looking and acting like they are nearsighted but with some work on relaxing the eyes they end up not needing glasses.

  • after practicing bates method, i feel uncomfortable with my glasses on.. i am experiencing dizziness and headache. should i go to a optometrist for a eye checkup?

  • I'd say a checkup is always a good idea. Maybe a slightly lower prescription would help. If you need to wear glasses for any reason, don't push your eyes too hard with them, i.e. keep shifting, swinging and blinking even with the glasses on, and palm as often as practicable.

  • Does the Power Vision Program by American Vision Institute is recommendable?

  • From a quick glance at their website, they seem to be offering exercises to make the eyes 'stronger and healthier'. This may work, I don't know. Bates method is about changing your brain patterns, your reactions to the messages your eyes give you.

  • Im excited at the prospects of seeing better naturally. I decided today to take out my contact lenses and go through my day, doing some of the exercises mentioned. But for tasks and times that require clear vision, what am I to do? Will wearing my contacts or glasses slow down my progress in improving my vision? At the beginning, before clarity is achieved, isnt it difficult to go without glasses or lenses?

  • It's easier to use glasses than contact lenses if you want to practise Bates method, because you can pop them on and off more easily.

  • did u wear glasses before?

  • i have astigmatism. Can the bates method work?

  • If you are interested, why don't you get a book about it. There are lots of websites and recommendations available.

  • @HappyHag : yea i have looked at the master bates method but that has only worsened my vision.

  • i think you can a sight that has the book for the bates method is iblindness dot com

  • I have -2.50 in both eyes and i really want to have as perfect vision as possible. I don't know what to believe since half the sites I find say the bates method doesn't work while others say that you can make your eyesight better with these kinds of exercises and I just want an honest answer, Can I get my vision to be close to perfect and will not wearing glasses or contacts hurt my eyes?

  • Bates method does work but no-one can guarantee that it will work. It depends whether you 'get it', and whether you persist long enough to overcome bad vision habits. Not wearing lens correction will not hurt your eyes. It may be illegal in certain situations and it may increase problems if you are not actively practising one or more of the following: shifting, swinging, relaxation and proper use of the imagination.

  • My daughter had really thick glasses when she was 6 years old.

We gave her two different herbs that healed her eye site.

She is 22 years old today and does not wear glasses.

As parents we did not know cold medications could almost blind our daughter.

When healing the eyes one has to keep house hold chemicals away from the body.

Fluoride will greatly slow down the healing process

  • What are the 2 herbs you mentioned and what else have you heard slows down the healing process?

  • Every day house hold chemicals like fluoride toothpaste (poison control label on tube) Sodium lauryl sulfate in shampoo and dish soap, all these things the body has to battle instead of healing the body. Chemicals cause all types of health problems. Alkaline people can't hardly get sick, acidic people always have health problems. Health is so simple once you understand the basics. My friends are cured of many ailments with just a little knowledge.

  • what she did to improve her eyes?

three years ago i had a perfect eye vision and they got bad because of overusing of computer in only 3 months, i dont know what to do to get my good vision back!

if u have any ideas plz tell me!

    thanx

  • I read that the Bates method didn`t actually work. But that the pacients experienced 'flashes' of clear vision for only a few minutes and that the time could be extended by practicing the method. But I thought your video was really interesting...

  • Flashes of clear vision can be increased to as long as you can maintain the mental state that makes them possible. As soon as strain kicks in again, you lose clarity without even realising how you are doing it. I suspect there may also be changes to eyeball shape which take a while to happen and may take an equal while to undo.

  • I was probably tense and tried the swing (before this video) and experienced all the objects "shaking" like your eyes did. I think you have explained it better for whoever sees this for the first time..

  • PD: I went from somewhat above -0.75 (my glasses prescription), and needing the glasses for computer work, back to -0.75 and happily working lenses-free. I generally don't wear the glasses; only in front of the computer if I am rather tired.

  • When you are tired, rest. Wearing glasses may seem to help, but it does encourage more strain. Rest can be achieved by something as simple as closing your eyes for two minutes, or even just blinking. Engage your imagination, and with your eyes closed, imagine a line of print scrolling from left to right and back, or iimagine a block of print scrolling up and down in front of you. If you try this, do let me know what results you get!

  • Watching your videos has helped me understand the Bates Method and avoid wearing glasses for using the computer.

Nevertheless, after 2+ weeks of practicing the exercises, I've reached a plateau. I'm back at about -0.75 (L&R) and cannot seem to improve further.

In your experience, what would one have to do to reach -0.50 or even perfect vision?

Many many thanks for your great videos and explanations

  • @t666dom - I m a believer in mainstream science considering the many illnesses it still cures. Bates method is science. take my example.

i didnt bother with the book when i first saw it over 20 years ago. i read about these on a website & did the techniques for 4 sessions. from -2.75 / -3.25 L & R respectively it is now -2 & -2.25. It has been stable for over 3 weeks and I m positive it will go down further.

HappyHag, thanks for the video..i m going to use the methods :-) good luck all.

  • hi, thanks for the videos. would you recommend removing your glasses or will that make it worse

  • You have to remove your glasses to practise Bates techniques. Whether you still wear them for other activities depends on the situation. It may be illegal to drive without them, for example. And not wearing glasses may create extra strain in a situation where you absolutely need good focus. In those cases, wear glasses.

  • My eye doctor once told me to get a pin and do excercises with it - I didn't stick to them but if I had I think my asthigmatism would have improved. You're so right, when I try to focus without my glasses it's worse. I'm going to try your advice. Very, very interesting. 5 stars

  • Glad you find it interesting. I am fascinated by the idea of doing exercises with a pin - never heard of it before. Pencils, yes. Pins, no.

  • So I can improve vision, and take off my glasses in a few years by practising? My vision is so horrible, from years of computer and tv...so can I make my vision clearer?

  • So bascially I'm kind of confused. If I start swining and letting my eyes be they will improve on their own? Or are there more techniques?

How long should I do swining, How much swining A Day? And How Long do you think it takes for people to start getting improvment (Averagely by weeks, days, months, years)?

  • There are more techniques - palming, shifting, visualising. The point about swinging is that once you've got it, you do it all the time either consciously or unconsciously, because it's part of how good vision works. Some people get a flash of clearer vision in a day. Making it last longer than a few minutes takes more practice.

  • I like doing palming because it relax me so.The objective is to lay on your bed cover your eye by palming and relax and wait until you see a blur or something.

  • Do you mean 'until you see black'? I never heard of waiting until you see a blur. Palming can also be a chance to practise mental focus by thinking about something specific that you enjoy thinking about.

  • hi, i would like to know if the bates method can improve my vision, 4.00 and 3.50?

  • I don't see why not. Why don't you try it?

  • Thanks a lot.

    Great Footage.

  • how do i know, if im doing this correct?

    still 5/5!

  • If you practise always thinking about the movement you experience, and not trying to get clearer focus, sooner or later you will get a moment of better focus happening all by itself. That's how you know.

  • Great stuff! 5/5

  • Thank you!

  • i cann0t swing in public places in daytime because the people will think that im crazy

  • A single sweep of the head constitutes a swing. Everybody does that all the time, the only difference is that they are not paying attention to the movement. There's movement everywhere - all you have to do is notice it.

  • Hi there my questi0n is, is it alright to do this in a dark r0om(little light)? Because i d0ing it at 30 minutes per night. I have my0pia. Thanks

  • Yes, it's fine to swing in a dimmer light. Why don't you try doing five minutes during the daytime, just to see what difference it makes having more detail? You can swing while you wait for a bus, for example. If you just do one or two swings, you won't draw too much attention!

  • I have like 12/20 eye sight. If I start using these methods won't that mean that I will have to go to the eye doctor and get a new prescription for lenses as my eyes get better and better?

    Thanks

  • I wouldn't bother doing that - I would just switch between not wearing glasses to practise awareness techniques, and wearing glasses when necessary. Eyesight is actually fairly flexible once you reconnect with it. Once you begin to get regular improvements, you can re-assess whether you need to change the prescription or can manage without.

  • Does anyone heard about the tibetan eye chart? I heard it's made to train the eye muscles and improve vision. I don't want to do long and boring exercises but some simple and more practical one.

I have astigmatism and I stopped using glasses because they bother me too much but my vision hasn't improved, on the contrary.. I'm afraid I might have to either resort to glasses to see or do lasik by 28, I can see now by my right eye in particular sees things kinda blurred.

  • If you don't want to do anything too complicated, you might try buying a pair of pinhole glasses. I'm afraid your vision won't just improve on its own, you need to wake up your attention. The exercises don't need to be more than a few minutes at a time, and if you pay attention they are not boring! Can you do magic-eye pictures?

  • Magic eye pictures? I know what they are but what are they for?

  • They encourage both eyes to work together, because the only way you can see them is if both eyes are working together.

  • Hi Happy, do you have a DVD with all your Bates exercises on it for sale? If so, how can I purchase this DVD? Thanks.

  • Yes, I do have a DVD. I am currently trying to put up a website where you can buy it. The domain name is happysightdotcodotuk. It will be up in a few days, I hope. If you want to order by post, you can send me a messsage on my YouTube account.

  • Hi Happy, do you have a DVD with all your Bates exercises on it for sale? If so, how can I purchase this DVD? Thanks.

  • As a Huxley fan myself, "The art of seeing" ended up in my hands and I´m in the process of reading it. Your videos are really helpful. I particularly enjoy the camera movements as instructions.

  • Glad you find them useful - thanks for your comments!

  • thank you so much i will try this!

  • Once i tried to read bates' book, but i could not make a sense cause my english was very poor. thanks to your video i understand this technic now and i intend to practise it.

  • How many swinging sessions should I do a week if I want to improve my eyesight very significantly and quickly?

How long should each session be and should I wear corrective lenses while doing the swinging?

Thanks for the videos their very creative and helpful:~)

  • Do some every day. Try a few minutes every day, and once in a while, try half an hour, and see what effects you get. How long it takes is impossible to predict. Don't wear lenses while you practice. And when you get the idea, you can swing as you walk around the house or along the street or in the supermarket or at the bus stop.

  • I have read much on the Bates techniques and your videos have been very helpful. Thanks!

  • Is this a joke? I'd rather see with glasses than pretend.

  • It's not a joke. It's not about pretending to see better than you can. It's about becoming aware of movement within blur, and the relaxation (see the video response) is to allow you to do this without straining to see through the blur. This allows focus to improve.

  • Thanks for taking your time and making this video.

Im going to try this exercise to help me improve my eyesight.

Do you have any tips or other methods you could teach me?

  • See the video responses!

  • People need to open up to other methods of improving eyesight. Lasik and glasses are all methods of corporate greed...control of the masses.

  • Just wondering, how long do you do it for, and how long does it take for a long term stable slightly better eyesight?

My eyesight is deteriorating so rapidly, like 4 diopers over this year, so how long would that take?

  • It's like how long is a piece of string. Do you know why the swift deterioration?

  • if this method really work how come not everyone with glasses use it? or i never heard anyone use it and that heal it eyes.

  • One reason is that it takes a change of attitude to change visual habits. Glasses are instant, and they bypass the problem, so only those who are unhappy with glasses are going to look for other ways. Another reason is the refusal of the optical professions to take Bates seriously, and this is partly Bates' own fault for antagonising them a century ago.

  • Do you know if not wearing glasses makes your vision worse? Suppose you only wear them for about 4-10 hours a day? and the other 4 hours you dont?

  • According to Bates theory, it's strain that makes your vision worse. So it depends how you use your eyes, whether you struggle to get things into focus or just allow them to be out of focus if that's how they are.

  • well for my cause I feel my eye allows it to be out of focus when i dont wear my glasses. Is this bad beacause wouldnt this mean I am destroying the ability of my eye to focus? so should I wear my glasses all the time?My main question was why do doctors say vison cannot be improved unless you get lasik.

  • It's bad to not use your eyes, i.e. switching off from what you see because it's out of focus. But you can observe movement and colour even when it's out of focus. Observation and awareness are the important things. As for your main question, it's time doctors actually took Bates seriously and checked out what it can and can't do. There is a professional prejudice there, which is not scientific.

  • What`s not scientific are Bates' ideas, which had no scientific basis almost 100 years ago, there's no professional predudice against ideas that have been disproved with almost 100 years of scientific advancement, refrective error CANNOT be corrected by Bates method

  • 'Refractive error CANNOT be corrected by Bates method' - ? Is this your scientific proof in a nutshell? I seem to remember someone once asserted that the earth CANNOT be round, too. I wonder if you have taken the trouble to read any of Bates' scientific papers?

  • I have and he shows a profound lack of understanding of the anatomy of the human eye, any ocular anatomy book will refute Bates' claims, specifically his use of the retinoscope to prove his claims

  • how do you explain those who have been corrected then?

  • I doubt very much they have been corrected, miracles can happen however I doubt they could prove they have reduced their refractive error by swinging and palming etc, relaxing your eyes is not the same as correcting them.

  • they have proven it by getting lower prescriptions from being able to see from further distances (better acuity)

  • I think the placebo effect is far more likely, prescriptions cannot be changed by exercises, simple ocular anatomy proves that

  • so you're gonna tell someone else what they're seeing with their own eyes?

  • Please explain. I guess when my vision starts clearing(20/300 to 20/60) it is just my imagination.

  • See, I don't believe in miracles. I believe in cause and effect. I also know for a fact that the Bates method can work, because I've improved my vision from 20/80 (probably worse at first, but that's the first measurement I did) to 20/25 by using and understanding it, and I'm not done.

You certainly may go on believing in miracles and argument from authority, and I'll go on believing in the evidence of experience and in the law of causality. Which, do you think, is the scientific worldview?

  • You could probably get a bigger improvement from 20/80 if you just squinted and save yourself hours of palming and swinging, for a treatment to be successful it needs to be proven in a logical and scientific way, if all these "alternative" treatments worked and were proved to work then they would cease to be "alternative" and become scientific

  • Actually, lately I find squinting makes my vision worse. In any case, it hurts, and it's not an effective way to see. In fact, it's just another way of straining, which -- I claim -- is the source of refractive error, as Bates wrote nearly a hundred years ago.

Besides, "hours of palming and swinging" have given me psychological benefit as well. I'd recommend them to anyone if only for that. Surely they can do no harm, and you might even see results you don't expect. (Pun very intended.)

  • the source of refractive error is usually your genes, squintnig gives a similar effect to a pinhole, reducing peripheral, spherical abberation and increasing ones depth of focus, admittedly it is a crude way to do so, but effective none the less. It must be nice having hours of free time to palm and swing, I prefer water sports, bridge and the occasional cuban cigar. An effecive way to see is by having ones eyes checked regularly by a professional and being given the appropriate correction.

  • I'm familiar with the pinhole effect.

I certainly don't spend hours palming and swinging every day! Half an hour, or even ten minutes, not necessarily consecutive, is quite enough to get results. Do you have that?

The time practicing Bates techniques is not the main thing, though. You have all day to use your eyes correctly, and all day to use them incorrectly. Once you know what is correct and what is incorrect, it's up to you. That's what Bates was onto.

    I don't smoke, because I run.

  • I'd much rather spend 10 minutes reading the paper during my morning constitutional. Tell me what you believe to be the correct way to use ones eyes, I find the open position works best except when blinking, jolly clever of me, learned it at the tender age of 1 day.

I'm afraid Bates falls into the same catagory as iridology and creationism, if you believe in it fine, but supply scientific evidence if you wish to prove its effectivness

  • Not trying to start another argument or anything, but I find it sort of funny when people demand scientific evidence although there is already evidence of its effectiveness. So what if it's not scientifically proved? If it works, I'm fine with it. =)

  • because dear boy/girl, proof should be offered to back up a claim as extraordinary as this, and such a claim would need extraordinary proof, annecdotal proof does not count as evidence either. One should demand proof of any "treatment" before believing its effectiveness, unless one wishes to rely on faith

  • Thank you I will try out all your exercices on your vidoes.

  • The Bates method will not improve vision, it may relax eyes but will have no effect on visual acuity. Correct focussing with spex or contact lenses and receptor cell density in the retina will effect visual acuity. Next you`ll be turning lead into Gold and water into wine Bates = Quack

  • Looking through lenses helps you to see in focus, but it does not improve visual acuity. In fact it often causes deterioration. How many people do you know whose eyesight has improved after wearing corrective lenses? How many do you know whose eyesighrt has deteriorated?

  • wrong, spex do improve visual acuity it`s called `best corrected acuity` deterioration will take place regardless if spex are worn or not. You have no scientific base for your assumptions

  • Corrected is not the same as improved, though. I'm pretty sure there are statistics to show that people who wear correction for short sight are more prone to glaucoma, for example. I think you have to offer proof if you want to assert that deterioration occurs at the same rate and to the same degree in people who wear correction and people who don't.

  • wearing a correction has no effect on your risk of developing glaucoma or retinal detchment or any other ocular disease. Being shortsighted gives you an increased risk of some conditions regardless of wearing a correction or not. You need to offer proof too, and I'm afraid annectdotal proof doesn't count!!!

  • No, my last post is wrong - I don't think there have been any studies to demonstrate pathology in the eyes of people who wear lenses versus those who don't wear lenses.

  • type - greg marsh mercola - onto google,
