A lot of those guys roll with a 47/17 or 47/18 (one guy is 48/19 around 2.5)gear ratio. We rode home through Tokyo last week and they were killing me on the hills out of shibuya but were way slower on the flat towards Tachikawa. Through cramped or hilly areas a lower gear ratio would be easier on the knees but for longer flatter rides it's a lot of work to keep speed.
