@coleever its different, im a fan of doing it to an FC tho. but fd or fc, they are such a nice car and the conversion goes so well with it. with the right set up the benefits are quite strong and the reliability is better in the higher horse power bracket. but its still weird seeing an rx-7 with a v8 roar. which is why its cool in an fc which is more brutish and angular, as opposed to the sleek sexy FD which really does suit the rotory sound and feel

I am really confused at why you would want to do that swap? The Rx7 weight is damn close to a C6Z with its little rotary crap in it... add the LS7 and its probably the same. So why not just get a C6Z that is a much nicer car that would have a more even weight ratio and room for wider rubber aka more traction. All in all I doubt the RX7 with an LS7 in it would even come close to a C6Z on the track or at the strip.

@carmodifire All Gen III/IV SBC's are based off the same block architecture. An LS1 block isn't all that different from an LS7 block. Dimensionally they are near identical. The increased displacement (5.7 liters to 7.0 liters) comes from the LS7 being bored and stroked relative to the LS1. This in addition to the LS7 using dry sump oiling and different intake/head design means the complete longblock weighs about 20lbs less than an LS1.

They're cool being that its a whole different type of engine, but if you want it to perform well, building a rotary just isn't worth it, doing bridge porting and replacing all kinds of apex seals and how much higher maintenance it is...I'd rather have a V8 too. Hell, Chevy was going to make a rotary Vette but found out how unpractical it was and stuck to V8's.

Personally, I think this is a kick ass project. That said, i'm a bit of a purist when it comes to RX-7s. They were made for rotaries, I think rotaries should stay in them. Whether the car is weighed dry or not, putting in a heavier or lighter engine would indeed kind of undo whatever the manufacturers did to get the balance they wanted.
Why waste your time and money on this car when u could have bought one that was already completed then do the swap. Unless you did all the work yourself or something.
..and we have another winner..only if you're not taking care of it, all performance engines run hot, more air and pressure=more heat...it's a 1.3l motor that makes 140 horses in the 80's..my 1.5 still only makes 110hp and it's only a year or two old..
Yes i know that but say if you have a coolant leak or something and that rotary over heats the effects are worse. Rotary engines have more friction than a regular cylinder engine. Have you seen the inside of a rotary? Its like a triangle that goes round and round thus creating more friction which results in heat. Secondly, where did you come from with the horsepower? i dont care how much you have or what other cars have. Stick to the relevant stuff!

had well over 170,000 on mine, and it was still running strong, either way, rotary in an rx-7 is the way to go, the 50/50 weight distribution and handling were designed with the rotary in place, take it out and you're destroying the basic spirit of the car, unless all you wanna do is go straight, which really is a waste of a beautiful car.

A big reason why this conversion is done so much is because you can retain the 50/50 weight distrubution as the rotary engine and more importantly the ancillaries are actually quite heavy. Substitute that with what is quite a compact and light aluminium V8 (LS series - no OHC's etc) then you can see the benfits.

V8s are good, but they belong in an another car imo. rotary engines are also good if you take the time to learn, read, and research. its a different engine all together, and requires different care/maintenance. the owner of this car can do what he pleases because its his, but i do not support these swaps. good build tho!

@bbywrx Because rotary's just aren't practical. They're cool being that its a whole different type of engine, but if you want it to perform well, building a rotary just isn't worth it, doing bridge porting and replacing all kinds of apex seals and how much higher maintenance it is...I'd rather have a V8 too. Hell, Chevy was going to make a rotary Vette but found out how unpractical it was and stuck to V8's.

I my self like all types of cars & motors makes. Like I said before, Wasn't sure what was being referenced about. Just replied back that American made motors do win and make unreal power. Even ones that are small to large cid. Just depends on the intended use. F1 motors are useless for the street ,and so are top fuel motors. Rotary are fine as well, and so are the regular types of piston motors. I love racing just about all types from drags to auto cross, and even drifting. Cars & motorcycles yl

Personally, I think this is a kick ass project. That said, i'm a bit of a purist when it comes to RX-7s. They were made for rotaries, I think rotaries should stay in them. Whether the car is weighed dry or not, putting in a heavier or lighter engine would indeed kind of undo whatever the manufacturers did to get the balance they wanted.

..and we have another winner..only if you're not taking care of it, all performance engines run hot, more air and pressure=more heat...it's a 1.3l motor that makes 140 horses in the 80's..my 1.5 still only makes 110hp and it's only a year or two old..

Yes i know that but say if you have a coolant leak or something and that rotary over heats the effects are worse. Rotary engines have more friction than a regular cylinder engine. Have you seen the inside of a rotary? Its like a triangle that goes round and round thus creating more friction which results in heat. Secondly, where did you come from with the horsepower? i dont care how much you have or what other cars have. Stick to the relevant stuff!

the problem here is you people don't do your research, there is LESS friction in a rotary engine, there are only 3 moving parts (compared to 50+ for a piston engine), you just spout the ignorance you've heard. as for the HP, Google it. The triangle design is what makes it smooth and high revving..jesus people, DO YOUR RESEARCH BEFORE RUNNING YOUR MOUTH.

They get better mileage in most cases (well the Renesis does), and are just as realiable and sound is subjective...everyone in the world has a V-8, that'd be reason enough for me to have a rotary, that and dumbasses who think it's the end all be all motor ;)

No way are they as reliable. If you can get 150,000 miles from a rotary without it breaking then that would be a miracle. Even the RX8s are breaking and burning oil badly.....!
Also there may be 1000's of V8s in America, but here in europe they are a rarity....

had well over 170,000 on mine, and it was still running strong, either way, rotary in an rx-7 is the way to go, the 50/50 weight distribution and handling were designed with the rotary in place, take it out and you're destroying the basic spirit of the car, unless all you wanna do is go straight, which really is a waste of a beautiful car.

Well, you were lucky, obviously that car was never driven hard....
A big reason why this conversion is done so much is because you can retain the 50/50 weight distrubution as the rotary engine and more importantly the ancillaries are actually quite heavy. Substitute that with what is quite a compact and light aluminium V8 (LS series - no OHC's etc) then you can see the benfits.

IT'S MAZDA'S ENGINE, THEY ARE THE ONLY ONES WHO CAN MAKE/USE THE WANKEL. Now that is out of they way.....
They do have more horsepower, wana know why? Because the TORQUE you seem to love more then horsepower, does not drop off at 7k RPM. Instead the torque is still there up until the 9k rev limit. There, that is enough of a rotarty engine lesson for you. Please do some research.
