Gillies got called because 1) He left his feet. 2) It's intent to injure because he is no where near playing the puck. 3) He hit's him with his hands up high, obviously going for the head.
That was a clean hit - no contact to the head with an elbow. It was late but no more dangerous than what Clutterbuck did to the other Isles player. Like people have been saying here, there was a glove in Cal's face but nothing more. I've seen much worse, like the blind hit on Brad Stuart by Kostopoulos that drew nothing more than a minor penalty. THAT was intentional to the head. Go check it out and see for yourself.

He has a total of 50 penalty minutes this season, not even leading his team. Anyone saying this isn't an infraction needs to take a close look at 0:28 - 0:32 of this video. Gillies clearly slams Clutterbuck's head into the glass with his left forearm/fist, causing the injury. It is 1) a high hit to the head with the arms (from the elbow down); 2) lateral hit to the head; 3) a hit into the boards/glass; 4) a hit on a player without the puck; and 5) a hit not related to the hockey play (hit in retaliation). Hopefully Gillies gets at least 2 games for each infraction.

@howaboutit08 Neither hit was suspendable imho, Clutterbuck let up on the guy, he should have got a boarding penalty, maybe a game misconduct, but the Gillies his wasn't even close to from behind, if anything it was interference. The refs need to start watching the game and stop thinking about reputations while they make calls.
And I don't cheer for either team. Sadly, I'm an Oilers fan... I used to have pride :/

@drummerboyy3232 The player Cal hit had just BARELY turned when Cal hit him (and he had the puck, which is weird for Cal because most of his hits are late) and then Cal gets blasted in the face just because he made the hit. Gilles hit him for no other reason then to try and hurt him because of a questionable hit. Also, there would be no reason to call Clutterbuck for anything because there is no penalty for checking from behind in the NHL, and he was close enough where it was not boarding.

Until the NHL takes a real stand and causes harm to a player's livelihood and career, nobody will pay attention. At the very, very least he should be out the rest of this season. I think something like 30 games would be truly fitting.

ye know there is no doubt that Gillies is a monkey and wouldnt make any other teams roster and is one lost fight away from the AHL at best BUT:
be real: Clutterbucks hit was worse: it was harder, and the player hit was further away from the boards making it more dangerous.Gililes really didnt even hit Cal that hard or as hard as he could have. League discipline is a joke. There is no way Gillies should receive the only suspension here. there is no place in the NHL for a goon like Gillies

The only dirty hit in this video was the one Clutterbuck threw on Debenedetto. The only two hits from behind in this video are Clutterbuck's as mentioned above and the one by another Wild on another Islander right before it. Clutterbuck should have gotten the 5 and a game for hitting from behind, not Gillies.

Anyone saying this isn't an infraction needs to take a close look at 0:28 - 0:32 of this video. Gillies clearly slams Clutterbuck's head into the glass with his left forearm/fist, causing the injury. It is 1) a high hit to the head with the arms (from the elbow down); 2) lateral hit to the head; 3) a hit into the boards/glass; 4) a hit on a player without the puck; and 5) a hit not related to the hockey play (hit in retaliation). Hopefully Gillies gets at least 2 games for each infraction.
