That rover has to be pretty tough too survive on the red planet. The Martian nights are colder than anywhere on earth even in Antactica. Then there's those viloent sand storms, in early summer, with those hurricaine force winds, that blanklet most of Mars. I rekon their life span's pretty short out there.

The reason no HD camera has been sent yet is because it is so hard to make a camera that can withstand the cold and low atmospheric conditions on Mars.

There is a limited amount of commands and electrical power on board. Typically the Mars rovers using something like the amount of power a light bulb uses! Not sure how much power Phoenix had. They were going to use the mic but there was a sandstorm that cut power supply too low and basically killed the lander.

When cameras/electronics are exposed to extreme temperatures they tend to die. Try using your laptop or computer out in -80C (-100+ F).

well this new mars science lab rover, to be launched in 2011, will have special fluids pumping through it to either keep it cool or warm it up which ever it may need, its computers on board must be very complex and they will only be able to function with this temperature control system, why not pack a very special HD camera and mic on board and keep them in working order with this special thermal control system, thats if it wont have it already.

@reevesAstronomy Your right the extreme weather conditions on Mars make difficult eletronic equipment too work properly or at all. For example that the Martian night temperatures are much lower than -80c (-100+F) that was recorded in Siberia, try -125C at night, and we want to send people eventually too Mars, no way I'd go there or anybody in their right mind..

Looks like it has a perfectly working ozone layer to me. And before you comment to me saying that I'm an idiot, if Mars did not have an atmosphere, the sky would be black!!!! Just like the moon. =)

Of course Mars has an atmosphere and NASA never said it didnt. They said no oxygen, only small traces. "Atmosphere" does not mean oxygen. Its almost all carbon dioxide. So if you ever landed there and took your helmet off, you would start to suffocate and breathe in a big dose of carbon dioxide, which will kill you quickly. Just 5% of it in the atmosphere can kill, and the atmosphere on Mars has 96%.

Mars has no magnetic field. Even if we could thicken the atmosphere using terraforming the solar winds would just strip it away again eventually. Not to mention it probably wouldn't be healthy for living things not having any protection from the radiation.

people saying stuff like get some plants and make good conditions for the plants to live etc etc. i dont think its that easy first think of the condition (warmth,cold,gasses in the atmosphere, gravity, time etc etc) and then think about how you would get all the seeds and plants on earth into a 7 month travel on a spacecraft and still survive the trip i dont see it happening. but it would be cool if they did.
