  • Hi....where to buy Arches watercolour paper in Singapore? Artfriend doesnt seem to sell that. Thx

  • @bubumuffin You may get from Strait Commercial Art but quite expensive like SGD10+ per piece. I buy online from aswexpressdotcom_ in bulk.

  • @ngwoonlam thx for the info :), did u ship them to here directly? or u use butler like comgateway and such?

  • @ngwoonlam : They can ship Singapore directly now. Reasonable shipping price.

  • @ngwoonlam thanks. i ordered 40 sheets of 140lb Arches, however during the payment option...they are unable to tell me what is the shipping charge.. :(.... i scared later they suddenly drop a bomb on me on the shipping charge. do you roughly know how much is the shipping?

PS: you're right, now Straits Co, charged 12.80 per sheet of 140lb Arches!

    Thanks in advance

  • @bubumuffin : They showed the total before I confirmed the payment. I don't why you don't see the shipping charge. Did you register an account? I had an account with them since I was in USA. You may email them first for the shipping charge before you buy. That could be better.

  • excuse me sir..may i ask? what kind of watercolour did you use? is it rembrand or van gogh?

  • @pikamir91 Rembrandt and Van Gogh. Some Winsor Newton, Holbein, A Graham and Daniel Smith.

  • hi,

  • @shamoonhaider , not stretched because it is a small piece, 11" X 14". Paper Arches Rough 140lbs. Thank you for your comments.

  • Bravo my friend

  • nice strokess but enjoy painting man just play with colors

  • Could you please tell what pen/ink you use for the sketch? I like to watercolor over a pen sketch, but am not happy with the pen I have been using. LOVE your work! Thanks so much for sharing!

  • WONDERFULL!

  • a+++++++++++

  • a+++++++++++

  • Absolutely magnificent.

  • love ur colors and the technique..great job,,

  • I watch all your videos over and over. Nothing compares. Looking forward to the next one:)

  • Mr.Woon Lam that is absolutely beautiful! I luv it!

  • Mr. Ng, I would like to ask your opinion on something. I am not a professional watercolour artist but I do have a little experience in using the media. Might I ask, which technique is suitable for painting: mixing paint with water and then painting bit by bit, or wetting the area you want to paint and then filling in the colours?

Please respond, and thank you for your time.

    Regards from M'sia.

  • My technique is very different from what you just said. I did some tonal study in sketchbook. If the sketch is good, I make a paintng.

I cover big areas first. I never paint bit by bit or wet the surface to paint. I block in whole area and adjust wet on wet or wet on dry or dry on dry.

    Hope that answers your question.

    Rgds,

    Woon Lam

  • Yes, it does. Thank you very much! :) Have a great day!

  • @ngwoonlam

    Hi Mr Ng,

I am an occasional watercolour hobbyist (I try to paint something once in a few months)..

    ..

My problem is with the watercolour paper stock that I keep inside my drawer - they seem to become "unpaintable" after a few months because the watercolour that I apply on it simply sinks into the paper instead of sit on the surface long enough for me to spread it or blend it with other colours.

    .. (pls read next post)

  • @ngwoonlam

    ..(cont'd)

If I do not paint regularly, how do I store the paper so that the above problem do not happen everytime I paint ?

I live in Singapore, so like many pple I buy the watercolour paper from Art Friend, Straits Commercial or Temasek Poly book store - I see that they do not wrap their watercolour paper stock with anything at all , its a stack of exposed paper , can I trust them that they are selling fresh paper ?

  • @kkdkk7 Hi, I used to keep them in the plastic bag given and put some dried silicon wrapped with cloth. I buy paper from Strait Commercial. Paper is in 25 pcs pack. Paper goes fast, so their stock should be quite fresh.

The best is buy and paint. Don't buy to keep. If it is gone, paint acrylic or coat gesso and paint watercolor.

  • @ngwoonlam

Thank you for the swift reply, I really appreciate that ..

When u said "If it is gone, paint acrylic or coat gesso and paint watercolor" .. in case I misunderstand, do u mean to apply watercolour on acrylic/gesso-coated paper ?

..this sounds adventurous to me, how will watercolour behave in this case ?

    (sorry to bother..)

  • @kkdkk7 Yes, coat a layer of gesso. And you can work with watercolor on it but the wetting is not going to be good. So you need a lot more paint and patience to work. Or just go with acrylic directly. Acrylic doesnt bother about the paper absorbing colors because you can go as many layers as you wish.

  • @ngwoonlam

.. ungrateful of me to thank you only one week after your helpful advice, but seriously, thank you !

  • a++++++

  • This is so beautiful - I love your style of painting, so fresh and vibrant

  • coloré lumineuse magnifique technique ,beaucoups de talent j'adore !!

colored light art beautiful, I love a lot of talent!

  • You are good! Very, very beautiful!

  • amazing. I just started working with watercolor. do you have any advice for working with watercolor pencil?

  • Hi, I have no experience in watercolour pencil. I just feel that color pencils are too light comparing to watercolour tubes.

  • Very, very beautiful!

  • Beautiful!

  • Amazing! so fresh, I love your watercolours, but it starts with your drawing. You seem to capture only what is important in the scene and accentuate it with colour. Is your drawing in pen or pencil?

  • This one is in ink. Some I use 6B pencil.

  • when i do painting with watercolor it becomes muddy ! sometimes its tooo much water ! i dont knw how 2 control it ! BUT I LOVE WATERCOLOR ! and u sir are a amazing artist !

  • Watercolor needs water and color. Most people use too much water but too little color. Use larger brushes that carry a lot of paint and water so that you can do more things with rich paint. That makes you paint faster with fewer layers. => Fresh and Direct => No chance to get muddy.

  • wow thak u so much sir ! This really helped me alot ! thank u.

  • Excellent!!!

  • When you do it, it looks so easy. When I do it, it sucks. . . I have crappy paper D:

  • Hi I used arches 140lbs rough. Every type of paper, the drying time and color absorption ratio are different. So need to get use of each before you can control the pigment concentration, color saturation, transparency, drying time, intensity reduction. The surface roughness also affects the our brushstrokes and speed of brushwork. I like to try all kinds of paper.

    Cheers,

    Woon Lam

  • you are amazing!!! ive just started to use watercolours, i'm just a lover of art, nonprofessionalist, so your work looks great, great skills, great colours.... wow

  • remind me of DONG Kingman

  • Thanks. That's a big compliment. I love DONG Kingman. He's too good to be.

  • There is so much movement and energy in your style...it feels like a pen and ink with swooshes of color and strokes that seem to be in motion. The beauty is in the freedom and lack of inhibition in your painting, just instinctive and loose. Strong and unique!

  • you are good!

  • Maybe I could paint barefoot too, but I doubt I can paint this beautiful :)

  • Good fresh direct painting - and its good to see a decent size of brush for a change! Also like the way you bash in there with strong colour right from the start on clean paper - the usual build up in water colour dosnt just wont get that sparkly and you get much more interesting darks if you bang them in on clean paper. Dont know why I am writing this - you know this stuff. Well done.

  • Hi, I use some Kolinsky Sable, some chinese brushes and some nylon brushes. I use more round than flat. Size : 14, 12, 8, 2 and 1.5 inch flat.

  • Fabulous watercolor technique. I love it. What type of brushes do you use?

  • beautiful... i'm an artist to come see some of my videos, if you would like

  • Actually if a pencil is used. Like I use 6B. It is not very visible after I put on colors. The colors can generally cover the pencil marks well. Only the white area, sometimes I will erase the pencil marks. Sometimes the pencil marks look good too.

  • Well your demos help me see how that is true (no mistakes). How do you do your sketches, with permanent ink?

  • Yes, I use permanent ink for ink and watercolor painting.

  • The exciting thing about watercolor is 'There is no mistake'. A mistake is a new way to do things. So it is always full of fun to paint in watercolor.

  • Awesome!
