I saw this movie after I had taken a college course in Filipino Studies. It was really good, and had a lot of key scenes having to do with race, family, and how to stay true to yourself. I especially love the scene where that one guy schools the others about Filipino history lol.

I am very much Filipino and have been associated with other Filipinos all my life. I am very much in touch with the Filipino culture and still, after watching this, all I can say is, I can't understand it, because everyone in this movie is trying so hard to prove a point. The just doesn't make any sense and it is just not realistic. This does not fit the true essence of being pinoy....nope!!!
You must be about 14. Has your parents ever thought you anything about respect? Obviously not. You have a long ways to learn that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. That's the problem with you young kids today. Many you have no respect for others and are unappreciative.

We were at the premiere in SF for 'the Debut'. It was great to meet the stars and have the director come out and answer questions afterwards.
This movie took some serious persistence and even stubborness to get made. Hollywood kept trying to dillute the story! Buy the DVD and watch the extras to get the whole story.
Again, I said BUY the DVD. If you want to see more quality films like this one, you need to go out and support those people who are making them!
Joy Luck Club is a film that seems a lot like this film and it got released way back in 1993. Got a lot of attention too! I saw that movie it was really insightful. I enjoyed it and I really want to see this move "The Debut". It really looks interesting! Seems like gangs become a temptation for some of the characters as well as conflict over career goals which is realistic.
Someone already did post this up on YouTube, username "thetigershow", I think. It was a great movie and Dante Basco is brilliant.
