If you knew about the Australian military's contingencies in case of an attack on NZ, you'd worry a lot less.

An invasion of NZ would be a dire and immediate threat to the East Coast of Australia - our most populated region.

Remember that invading NZ would not be at all easy for any country except Australia which is never gonna do that anyway.

The Brits had to sacrifice a hell of a lot to retake The Falklands. Invading remote island nations is no easy task even for the biggest powers.

In that light, even though it would be very expensive, and logistically complex, using New Zealand as a staging base against attacking the Australian mainland makes perfect sense.
