You know if you think about things in scales it is correct, but i have gotten really far just playing lines and paying attention to the phrasing of the line. Just my two cents i wish not to disagree or offend anyone. He has a very horn style phrasing in the way his solos are a lot of legato and they breathe,... highly underrated in the world of shred.
Just asking at this point, but do any guitar players out there think they would pay up to $25 for a complete lick by lick breakdown of this song, with an explanation of all the theory, etc. Keep in mind I'm not selling anything at this point, just wondering if it would be worth my while to pursue this idea, get permissions from the artist, etc. Call it research....
@gromshit101 him and derek have been known to collaborate, i saw them play together at All Good Music Festival (HIGHLY recommend its always the best) this past year, Jimmy came out with Derek and Susan's Band and Derek came out with Widespread and did a nice extended back and forth with herring, incredible experience.
Any guitar players out there want to take me up on the challenge of trancribing this? I'm a minute and half into the song ahead of you. Trick is to able to play it at tempo...
There is a series of seven Guitar World Jimmi Herring lessons on Youtube, many of which focus around learning this song. If you are familiar with the diminished, major pentatonic and mixolydian scales, the notes (at last into the first minute and a half) are not particularly difficult to figure out - keep in mind there is a lot of chromaticism. The challenge for me is working this up to tempo. The chord work Jimmy lays out nice in GW #1 video . Helps if you can slow it down to learn it.
@jkvasn Get some software to slow this down. It bounces around a lot betwen mixolydian type lines and diminished. If you are familiar with those scales picking out the notes is definitely approachable. As I said earlier though, very complex lines at a VERY fast tempo. I'm learning this now, will take me weeks, but transcribing this I believe is a definite rutbuster. A lot of chromatic beboppy notes in there as well. Learn those scales if you don't know them already if you want to learn this.
Good call man , I thought I was trippin because Im such a huge derek fan I heard that and was like fuck this guy just nailed something only person I've heard can nail
@Janders52 hey buddy i know this was a while back but thought u might like to kno i was wrong about derek trucks being on this track, he was only on two songs from the album. One of jimmy herrings amazing abilities is being able to make fingered playing sound like slide, and thats exactly wat he's doing here, pretty incredible and yes sounds very much like trucks, but they've actually known eachother for quite some time and played together for years.
@bimwopbarn , thats cool that you tracked down that last post yeah I remember that, right after that my buddy told me that it was herring and not trucks and after seeing that I argued your point to him haha. but yeah turns out jimmy actually co-wrote a bunch of derek tunes on his first couple of albums. anyways I appreciate the update
it actually isnt derek the only track derek plays on is Lifeboat serenade. and the tone is excactly like herrings, i bet he is just using the tremolo arm to imitate derek
@bimwopbarn Derek doesn't play on this song. In the GW videos I mentioned earlier, Jimmy talks about learning to phrase like a slide player and says a lot of that rubbed off on him playing with derek over the years. No, he doesn't use a whammy arm to do it, doesn't sound as if he has a guitar with a tremolo arm on it. I'm seriously obsessed with Jimmy's guitar style at the moment.
Having met him and hung out with him personally last night @ the tour opener for Widespread Panic & Allman Brothers in Camden NJ I can say you're totally right. Herring is the most down to earth, kind professional musician I ever met. Amazing player, amazingly awesome dude
what key is the diminished section in?

@cm0220ster $10 tops, because I imagine that is a good idea and people would pay for that, but I don't think I would pay $25 for just one song
