I really don't get where anyone thought that CTV took it seriously. When you introduce yourself as a syrup sucker it's not serious. CTV didn't take offense you meatballs. they knew colbert was just making a joke so they made a joke back. half the clip was about pink toques for god's sake!
I'm Canadian and I don't take offense, Colbert is just having some fun, and when he criticizes our politics, he also criticizes America's politics, so he's not that much of a hypocrite. He is a comedian, after all. Who cares about maintaining Canadian nationalism? There's more Asians then whites here, anyway lol.

Whoa guys, I expected viewers of the Colbert Report to be intelligent enough to identify a satirical broadcast when they see one. Being offended that CTV was joking around with Colbert and thinking they're serious makes you no better than the people Colbert mocks on his show.
@vwl15 I think it should also be pointed out that the Colbert Report airs on CTV at night. So basically if anyone should know when he's kidding, it would be CTV.
It's always good to have a light hearted story like that now and then.
us fuckin deserved this shit, they cheat in everything, ex. how ben johnson got fucked over by that roid monkey carl lewis, if you don't believe me watch bigger stronger ffaster.
I guess it takes a while to understand Canadian humor, especially when I kept on hearing "tongue-in-cheek" heard at the Olympic closing ceremonies over and over again from Bob Costas.
I don't get it, what about the ctv broadcast makes it seem like they took him seriously? "tongue firmly in cheek", "satirical crusade", good god how much
more obvious can CTV get? They very clearly KNOW Colbert is a sitarist.
They're pandering to the humor. It's the same reason Colbert, Stewart, and O'Brian all had a "fight" that spilled over three shows. Because sometimes news broadcasters like to have a little fun. I really, honestly and truly fail to understand how anyone can believe CTV was unaware Colbert was joking, especially since they very explicitly said he wasn't serious. When you call something satire, you are explicitly stating it is not serious.
Your comment fails because you do not know the phrase tongue-in-cheek and satirical crusade. Looks those two things up and then tell me CTV took it seriously.
@igg73 I don't think they really took it seriously, they were pretty light-hearted about it. They simply clarified a misunderstanding while laughing at his jokes with him. If they had gone one some diatribe about how offensive and inaccurate his comments were than, yeah they would have been taking it too seriously.
who cares we got the most gold. Case and point Canada 1 america 0....or I guess technically Canada 14, america 9. So thats that, and Im going to clench my canadian icehole firmly with pride, tense up my canadian ice cheeks tell you americans to bend down puker up and kiss my icey ass.
America did the exact same thing in Salt Lake, and by the way all countries were given far more practice time than is required by IOC rules.
If they were trying to screw the U.S. they could have given you half the practice time that they did and still been within the rules set forth by the International Olympic Commitee.
Funny you guys actually take a comedy show as fact without any concern for reality......
Ugh. I'm disappointed with their "rebuttal" attempts. They in no way match the hilarity of Colbert. They're trying way too hard, come off unnatural, and thusly kill the humor.
Any issue that happens and is bound to happen at the olympics will get this kind of arrogance and ignorance from any american. Stephen Colbert is an idiot.
i hope that is a joke, i seem to remember a certain womens hockey game in 2002 in which an american ref called 13 penalties against canada in the gold medal game. im sure it was a joke though

Because its happening in Canada! Im sure Canada is like America where if they are hosting the games it's going to be Candians supervising and running the show. While everyone competes, it's still the host countries problem is something malfunctions dont you agree? That is why im critizing Canada because it is Canada's Olympics; if the same were to happen in America it would be Americans at fault.
How embarrass will you be when you'll find out that the hydraulic systems to raise the torch were in made in the USA? By the way, at Salt Lake games Canadians were involved in almost every major events to make sure you Americans didn't fuck it up.
we know he is just joking and its funny but by doing were turning his joke back on him. it wasnt a seriouse offer to proov him wrong and make him admit hes wrong or anything
Calm down, Canadians. It's just a fucking joke. I get it, you're so sick of getting kicked around by Americans. But such outrage over jokes just makes you seem more pathetic.
@joskitzo Have you seen how the Americans react to Steven's Jokes? The Canadian News Networks are calling Stephen out for an appearance to boost their ratings. They are taking this as well as anyone else. He's here in Vancouver filming his show, and the Canadians are lined up for 14 hours to see him in person.
I was mostly insulted by a commentator who said that the audience really believes Colbert. Don't insult our intelligence. We obviously know its satire, & the audience reacts that way b/c the jokes are funny and making fun of Canada is even funnier when a news org. (even 1 that's in on the joke) finds it newsworthy to devote a segment to him. Admit it or not, Canadians have this inferiority complex that makes them very touchy when Americans make jokes at their expense.
That's a gross generalization of Canadians, especially as the political ideologies of liberals and conservatives agree with Steven's Satire. We get that he's joking, the challenge was issued to get him to visit Canada. The Americans I see on TV are offended by a lot more things than Canadians. If anyone is insecure about themselves, the "I-have-the-biggest-gun" country is the most likely contender.
I didn't intend to paint all Canadians in 1 way (like u just did with Americans), but based on conversations with my friends from Ottawa, my family & time in Toronto, & the Canadian kids I studied abroad with, there is this propensity to become defensive about their country. This reaction is perhaps warranted b/c many Americans do have false impressions about Canada. For ppl who find humor in both American ignorance and Canadian defensiveness, this type of satire is right on the money.
The journalists who made this a story on the news obviously knew that Stephen was joking, and I'm sure they also knew that Americans are not taking Colbert's claims seriously. We know Americans aren't stupid. CTV News was simply having fun and taking the joke a little further. If you haven't noticed, generally Canadians love satire and good humour in general. It's just a way to have fun and a good laugh, and also to share the joke all us Canucks.
Yeah he's an expat, that doesn't matter. He grew up here and learnt humour while he was here. If he grew up in America he'd be just as dry and stiff as the rest of you (jk).
yeah, that's certainly a possibility. however, that's kind of implying that canadians have no or little sense of humor. why would this bother them so much as compared to how they are portrayed on the show southpark?
We get the Colbert Show up here and understand the joke. We have reacted the way many other people on the show have by inviting him to participate in the games.
There are plenty of people laughing in the video because it's funny.
for people who dont watch stephen colbert. he is a comedian and is always in character. its all satire. he knows that and even the organizers know that. if you notice. nobody is upset here.
exactly. what people don't seem to understand is that colbert is in character on the show: he is by no means like that in person. the fact that canada is taking it so seriously makes me question their intelligence.
all you americans that are saying Canadians cant take a joke, that is ridiculous...we are the land of comedy and famous comedians...check out "talking to americans" on you tube, and see how some of the americans commenting on those videos, they seem to not be able to take a joke, so i guess i should question their intelligence aswell right?? What my point is, is that you cant generalize an entire country for a couple of comments from some ppl and think thats how the whole country is
@krick16 thx, comedy central put him on 2 b the conservative verson of stewart, stewarts funnier but ur right u cant take colbert seriously or you.d be listening to glenn beck
Steven colbert is too funny. I can't beleive anyone on this thread would take what he is saying serious, even if he was being serious...come on its still funny. What ever happened to us Canadians being able to laugh at ourselves... geez tongue in cheek ppl
and we will win gold medals idiot we have several gold medals from previous years and since the last time and we've put more money than ever into it this time around because its in vancouver.. more money + time (time = money) = more medals .. dumbasses ... ctv is obviously joking and so is colbert and so am I... wow the idiots have taken over.. i recognize the irony by the way since I have also posted,,, but you have proven that you can't find your own way to water
Good that somebody realizes that Colbert as well as these Canadian officials are just having fun. Some people actually take Colbert's persona seriously. The Bush administration once invited Colbert to some even and it was hilarious watching them squirm uncomfortably as he roasted the administration, oblivious to how much he had made fun of the administration on his show. Some folks don't understand satire.
Everyone who comments on the internet is an idiot... idiots jabbering back and forth without a common point or clue .. im turning this tube bs off forever... morons.... you take generalizations of entire , you know how many canadians it takes to come up with one stupid video.. same as the americans or people who have big noses or people who are 5feet high.... just one.. just one person with a job to do and not enough time to do it well.. you people are sheep. scared and hostile
I am a canadian and I do not support this video. We are such nerds. Fighting back? You don't fight back with a night show comedian. Throwing ammunition at your enemy. Colbert and his team of writers can come up with a dump truck of hilarious things to say about this old guy and his light-hearted jab. Leave the beaver at home. Just win some golds and ignore the kids when they have a tantrum. We can't always get what we want, but we can pick what we choose to fight for. Slow news day.. for me
The funniest part about all of this is how seriously the syrup suckers are taking this whole thing. Do they really not understand his job description? If I were more cynical I'd even suspect Colbert is paying the nuckers to go nuts over this.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Jesus... he is a comedian. The fact that your news networks are taking such offense to this is comical in itself. As an American, we here you Canadian Iceholes knock us all the time, and one time a COMEDIAN makes a joke about you, you get your panties tied in a bunch. Don't get so upset, he isn't being serious -- your not important enough to be taken serious.
He really isn't that great of a comedian. Like "iceholes" really that is the best he can come up with, it is like he took it from a 5 year old before the show.
Can't wait till we kick your ass at hockey, you stupid obese fuck.

kiltncaber 2 years ago
Calm down, Canadians. It's just a fucking joke. I get it, you're so sick of getting kicked around by Americans. But such outrage over jokes just makes you seem more pathetic.
joskitzo 2 years ago
@joskitzo Have you seen how the Americans react to Steven's Jokes? The Canadian News Networks are calling Stephen out for an appearance to boost their ratings. They are taking this as well as anyone else. He's here in Vancouver filming his show, and the Canadians are lined up for 14 hours to see him in person.
SUSLabrat 2 years ago
I was mostly insulted by a commentator who said that the audience really believes Colbert. Don't insult our intelligence. We obviously know its satire, & the audience reacts that way b/c the jokes are funny and making fun of Canada is even funnier when a news org. (even 1 that's in on the joke) finds it newsworthy to devote a segment to him. Admit it or not, Canadians have this inferiority complex that makes them very touchy when Americans make jokes at their expense.
joskitzo 2 years ago
That's a gross generalization of Canadians, especially as the political ideologies of liberals and conservatives agree with Steven's Satire. We get that he's joking, the challenge was issued to get him to visit Canada. The Americans I see on TV are offended by a lot more things than Canadians. If anyone is insecure about themselves, the "I-have-the-biggest-gun" country is the most likely contender.
SUSLabrat 2 years ago
I didn't intend to paint all Canadians in 1 way (like u just did with Americans), but based on conversations with my friends from Ottawa, my family & time in Toronto, & the Canadian kids I studied abroad with, there is this propensity to become defensive about their country. This reaction is perhaps warranted b/c many Americans do have false impressions about Canada. For ppl who find humor in both American ignorance and Canadian defensiveness, this type of satire is right on the money.
joskitzo 2 years ago
Hello from a Colbert devoted ice hole, lol!
It's just a way to have fun and a good laugh, and also to share the joke all us Canucks.

jim carrey is now American.sorry
svd205 2 years ago
Yeah he's an expat, that doesn't matter. He grew up here and learnt humour while he was here. If he grew up in America he'd be just as dry and stiff as the rest of you (jk).
Suki278 2 years ago
Did he really grow up in Canada?
7080hutchison 2 years ago
@7080hutchison Jim Carrey, yeah.
Suki278 2 years ago
yeah, that's certainly a possibility. however, that's kind of implying that canadians have no or little sense of humor. why would this bother them so much as compared to how they are portrayed on the show southpark?
you have a comma splice in your last sentence.

We get the Colbert Show up here and understand the joke. We have reacted the way many other people on the show have by inviting him to participate in the games.
There are plenty of people laughing in the video because it's funny.

for people who dont watch stephen colbert. he is a comedian and is always in character. its all satire. he knows that and even the organizers know that. if you notice. nobody is upset here.
cchege 2 years ago
ok Steven Colbert is extremely funny BUT you can't take him seriously, He's insulted Mexico, or every city in the US with the name Canton.
krick16 2 years ago 9
exactly. what people don't seem to understand is that colbert is in character on the show: he is by no means like that in person. the fact that canada is taking it so seriously makes me question their intelligence.
heychill 2 years ago
haha uh, im Canadian buddy -.-
krick16 2 years ago
well, there always exists exceptions. you are obviously one of the smarter ones.
heychill 2 years ago
some people just don't know what humor is, and it must have been a really slow news day in Canada.
krick16 2 years ago
all you americans that are saying Canadians cant take a joke, that is ridiculous...we are the land of comedy and famous comedians...check out "talking to americans" on you tube, and see how some of the americans commenting on those videos, they seem to not be able to take a joke, so i guess i should question their intelligence aswell right?? What my point is, is that you cant generalize an entire country for a couple of comments from some ppl and think thats how the whole country is
JBomber22 2 years ago
@krick16 thx, comedy central put him on 2 b the conservative verson of stewart, stewarts funnier but ur right u cant take colbert seriously or you.d be listening to glenn beck

Waaahhh... Didn't know he would be so hostile against us... Then again, most of the people commenting say that it is not so...
And there isn't much to hate about Canada... After all, it's comprised mostly of Caucasian people, just like America...

Steven colbert is too funny. I can't beleive anyone on this thread would take what he is saying serious, even if he was being serious...come on its still funny. What ever happened to us Canadians being able to laugh at ourselves... geez tongue in cheek ppl

People should know by now that Colbert isn't being 100% serious on his show.
pinkislove113 2 years ago 2
Colbert is a jerk. Show sucks now.
It is not funny anymore. Maybe it is because of his new sell out. Commercials for Budweiser? Those are actual and not fake.
Absolutely not funny when someone tries to manipulate.
He is an a-hole!

@geir44 What is exactly wrong with Budweiser?

The world would be a better place if people only understood satire.
I believe there are two types of people in the world- Those that get it, and those that don't.

and we will win gold medals idiot we have several gold medals from previous years and since the last time and we've put more money than ever into it this time around because its in vancouver.. more money + time (time = money) = more medals .. dumbasses ... ctv is obviously joking and so is colbert and so am I... wow the idiots have taken over.. i recognize the irony by the way since I have also posted,,, but you have proven that you can't find your own way to water
pef2007 2 years ago 4
Good that somebody realizes that Colbert as well as these Canadian officials are just having fun. Some people actually take Colbert's persona seriously. The Bush administration once invited Colbert to some even and it was hilarious watching them squirm uncomfortably as he roasted the administration, oblivious to how much he had made fun of the administration on his show. Some folks don't understand satire.
visigothsatthegates 2 years ago 4
at least these people have jobs...
pef2007 2 years ago
Everyone who comments on the internet is an idiot... idiots jabbering back and forth without a common point or clue .. im turning this tube bs off forever... morons.... you take generalizations of entire , you know how many canadians it takes to come up with one stupid video.. same as the americans or people who have big noses or people who are 5feet high.... just one.. just one person with a job to do and not enough time to do it well.. you people are sheep. scared and hostile
pef2007 2 years ago
I am a canadian and I do not support this video. We are such nerds. Fighting back? You don't fight back with a night show comedian. Throwing ammunition at your enemy. Colbert and his team of writers can come up with a dump truck of hilarious things to say about this old guy and his light-hearted jab. Leave the beaver at home. Just win some golds and ignore the kids when they have a tantrum. We can't always get what we want, but we can pick what we choose to fight for. Slow news day.. for me
pef2007 2 years ago
How do you guys not get that the news is not being serious either????
bzang 2 years ago
The funniest part about all of this is how seriously the syrup suckers are taking this whole thing. Do they really not understand his job description? If I were more cynical I'd even suspect Colbert is paying the nuckers to go nuts over this.

Jesus... he is a comedian. The fact that your news networks are taking such offense to this is comical in itself. As an American, we here you Canadian Iceholes knock us all the time, and one time a COMEDIAN makes a joke about you, you get your panties tied in a bunch. Don't get so upset, he isn't being serious -- your not important enough to be taken serious.
transws6am 2 years ago
He really isn't that great of a comedian. Like "iceholes" really that is the best he can come up with, it is like he took it from a 5 year old before the show.
Can't wait till we kick your ass at hockey, you stupid obese fuck.
b4igetu 2 years ago
For one, he doesn't write the jokes for his show. They have people that do that for him. (all TV comedians have writers)
And secondly, did you just call him obese? What the fuck.
