I think he really wanted it to work with Heather, but as he told his Mom ...no chemistry. It's interesting that the writers actually used a valid fact about these two and wove it into the story. I think that if the characters had actually had chemistry the Cane and Lily story may have been delayed for a bit. Cane and Heather were like a hot tamalae and tofu.

I think the only reason Cane wanted it to work with Heather was because he was afraid of his feelings for Lily. Cane was trying to make something more of his seeing Heather so he wouldn't have to deal with his growing feelings for Lily.
