Also at the very top of the lane was a house owned by the waterboard and occupied by an employee who had to open and close several stopcocks etc there was no tarmac or safety barrier then and can you even start to imagine the isolation and silence? There was power lines on poles but he and his family must have felt so alone. his surname was Broadbent check it out if you find this too far fetched. look close and you will find the remnants of the house.
My mum lived in this house with her parents, George and Mary Walton. She used to walk to school and back everyday (no cars!!). She had many fond childhood memories here and i too have taken my children to the spot she once lived, they cannot believe she used to have to walk so far. My grandma walked into Greenfield village while in child labour ! again no transport was available.. If anyone has any old photos please let me know.... I sadly have none & my mum has passed away
What many don`t know is that much of the lower slopes of the valley near the old scout hut are paper waste from Fletchers mill that owned or own a great deal of the land around Dovestones and i`m old enough to remember how much better it was before that dreadful reservoir ruine paradise,
Awesome .....you got the "sugarcube" at 1:25, always a challenge to climb up that thing without help until your about 12 or 13yrs old and even then its still difficult. Can you believe I took my wife to visit England from America in 1998 and Chew Valley was on our list of things to see right up there with London Tower and Stonehenge lolol

I cycled up this today - beautiful remaining snow drifts with mists and frozen sections still around :D
