I love my nifty fifty lens, but I wouldn't have mind if Canon raised the price slightly so they could make it a better lens. If it had a better focus ring, 6 rounded aperture blades and a metal mount I would be much happier. I think this could be achieved without jacking the price too much higher.
Man tough decision between this and the nikon d7000 and also considering the canon 7d while being over the top price range...... But i just do not like the swivel screen :(
also - 4:24 that's actually a remove input socket, allows you to release the shutter with a press of the button on the remote. Essential for low light shooting with a tripod, less camera-shake.
the 50mm f/1.8 is not a bad lens for photography, although it's not what you'd call an "everyday" lens like the standard kit 18-55mm. I bought the 50mm one for my 500D to have alongside with the kit lens and It takes some good artistic shots in low light.
Thank you for making a video without jokes again... This is the Dave we know and love. The funny videos are ok, but it seems to me like you're just selling out with those personally. Make more videos like this, Dave, how you usually make them. It's nice to have humor, but too much takes away some of the respectful experience we normally get from you.
It's your videos, of course, so do whatever you want. But I implore you, keep the real Dave around.
Dave, trust me that 50 will blow any zoom lens you get out of the water. that 1.8 aperture will do incredible in low light, and depth of field. Having said that, the 50mm MkII is a piece of junk as far as build quality. Just compare it to the 50mm MkI which is solid metal construction.
i got the canon 60d in november. It really is a great camera. I was going to go for the T2i but i think the body on the canon 60d is a lot more durable and has more features :)
You would want to get a wide 28mm lens cause with 50mm on a cropped sensor camera you will be zoomed in more especially if you're filming in your computer room
@ZeTutorials My friend has it, spend the money it has so many handy things on the 550d like the extra wheel so you can do apture and f stop at the same thing with going into menus
@ZeTutorials This has a nicer more robust build quality and more options for the aperture and stuff than the 550. I'm torn between the 500D and D5000 (Nikon) at the moment, both are similar prices, but I'm more of a Canon guy, but Nikon tend to excel in a few areas Canon are weaker and vice versa. Wish I could get both haha.
@ZeTutorials i was gonna get the t2i/550d but rebels just arent fun to use, they are small, feel cheap, and sound cheap, i decided to go for the 60d because it has alot more features
obviously if you want a zoom lens, i'd go for the 55-250mm lens which i have for my 500D which has image stabilising,. i have got some really nice shots with it, i'll send you a link to my flickr if you want to check out my photos?...
obviously if you want a zoom lens, i'd go for the 55-250mm lens which i have for my 500D which has image stabilising, gotten some really awesome shots with it! :)

the 50mm lens just has low Depth of field so the background is really blurry which is really great for close up photo shots. The aperture which is f/1.8 is really really good, great for video and also great for photos.
a larger lens, e.g. the 55-250mm lens is about £50 more expensive than the 50mm lens and the aperture is f/4-5.6 which is not as good, the lower the number the better!
this is a great lens! and it is just 50mm, so doesn't zoom in any more or less than its 50mm focal length
Very nice camera indeed. Its quite funny over the past couple of months a few youtubers have bought this camera along with the 550d. Everyones going for canon! It would be nice to see a youtuber get something different like a nikon.
I'm very jealous! Saying that, my 450D is still doing strong and doing photography fine. I'm waiting for the 600D or 70D to upgrade to get video capabilities because I don't think I can justify an upgrade yet.
dave, why dont you have this anymore? when are you getting a new camera?

Yeah, I was going to go for the 550D but then I thought the articulating screen would be much less awkard at weird angles.

The 50mm 1.8 is a great little lens but with the 1.6x crop factor its more like an 80mm lens.

50mm is great for photography especially due to the f1.8 aperture for shallow depth of field effects :P
