It wasn't a water hammer, the turbine was old, it was worn out by turbine vibrations, 8 bolts were badly cracked, 6 nuts were missing. It simply fell apart.

@kj762aa : You have no understanding of how a hydro plant works do you? Do you understand that the units weight millions upon millions of pounds and the pressure put onto the turbine from the water is unbelievably intense. The main reason it failed was from over usage, mis-alignment of the rotor and turbine shaft, and not being maintained correctly. Exposed pipes are common in hydro depending on dam design, and there is millions of gallons of oil in hydro plants.

There is something off about this still. There were way more people in the facility than usual. It was usually staffed at fewer than 50 people and even with extra contractors present for the reported "maintenance" who were all those people and why were they there? An absolute tragedy that should be answered.

If the "cost of electricity can rise 5 times" then now would be a good time to get a loan for a 'renewable energy array' for your house if you live somewhere where the prices will go up!

Not sure why my comment got thumbs down?? Oh well I was just trying to come up with a constructive suggestion for the people who might be affected with prices going up 5 times. There comes a time when prices rise.. when renewable energy actually means FREE energy because once you own the solar array it works for a very long time & after it has paid for itself you have FREE energy & you keep the money instead of paying bills.

@ejbh3160: Hydroelectric power is also renewable, don't you know? In fact, it is one renewable source that is reliable enough to supply base load.

Producing power is an inherently risky operation. Your solar array can short out and kill someone by electrocution; wind generators can fail explosively in high winds. The safe path is to do without, but it gets COLD. Nothing is free; you can fall off your roof cleaning the panels, and those batteries you have to have for night have to be replaced.
