I work in a cinema with a single 35mm projector that's 40 years old, has a stop button that doesn't work and is held together with gaffer tape. We use a tower system with a bent take-up reel that makes a horrible grinding sound, and the projection room has barely enough space to move around in - you have to hold your breath and hope you don't get your nose chopped off by the feed reel when you squeeze behind the back of the projector to get to the sound gear!
It's in Dallas, TX and used to be called the Science Place. Since it merged with the Museum of Natural History they are both now called the Museum of Nature & Science.
the Imax bulbs are really expensive because I tried to buy one over the phone but the guy kept telling me I had reached the local cab company & that if I didn't stop calling he would call the cops then the nut house -I know if someone lies to you saying they're the cab company then obviously they can only sell to select companies and those bulbs must be expensive because the worker at the gardening center at Walmart told me certain bulbs are perriannual so maybe Walmart has Imax bulbs for cheap
The projector rises and lowers on belts so you dont have to climb up to it. The dubber is there as backup in case the digital disc soundtrack fails. The bulbs do not cost half a million dollars. This information brought to you by an IMAX projectionist.
By the way, this is an IMAX Dome system. Non-dome systems are fairly different. The film is still 70mm 15 perf, but the projector typically isn't on a lift. Also, because of the curvature of the Dome screen, the image on films for Dome systems is squished by a special fisheye lens, and the lens' optical center is actually below the film frame center.
i cant believe that they still use tape

@kevinspl2000 tape is better than anything else, even HDD. If you go to a digital cinema, what you are watching is TV anyway, cinema is CINEMA

when does imax become digital projection so i can plug in my xbox. Or lets take the simple route and make a realtime digital>film reel converter

Nice Idea, but there are too many parts. Will be replaced by something less costly int the years to come, Beside that the screen size is over kill.

the newer ones are smaller and cheaper

I know that the newer Digital projectors used at the new AMC theaters are about 200,000 and the bulbs are about 2,000.
