we are going to the tv room after pe the kids think great tv then when we all sitting uncomfortably on the floor they put this shit on then its playtime standing in the playground freezing before doing some shit with that white glue the teacher poured out of an industrial sized bottle then walking home only to be taken to grandma's for an evening of the news and shitty soaps on tv the bill emmerdale and coronation street ...... how i miss the best days of my life
I've read elsewhere that it was no less a man than Ron Grainer who composed the theme for 'Basic Maths'. That's plausible, as he was regularly ATV's go-to-guy for theme music. If that's true, then it merely confirms what an alchemist of sound he truly was.

@crazyclive 'Fraid not - it *was* a musical genuis Ron, but Geesin rather than Grainer this time. That's the same Ron Geesin who appeared on some of Pink Floyd's output ("Atom Heart Mother", certainly) and who composed other innovative / creepy (delete as applicable!) synth theme tunes for ATV / Central such as the one for Leapfrog. Hope this helps - gc
@graysonscolumn I realised some time ago that I'd made this mistake when I heard Ron Geesin's excellent (albeit short) 'Twisted Pair' track from the old "Starting Science" ATV/Central series off the MHPPP website, but thanks anyway. :)
This track and most of the other ITV Schools' Interlude pieces along with some BBC ones from the 1970's and 1980's can be found on a new double CD called "Watch With Teacher". You can find this Cd by searching under Winchester Hospital Radio from your Search Engine and then click on their CD section where there is a full track listing of the 79 tracks along with full ordering details. It can also be ordered from the HMV or Amazon websites, just search under "Watch With Teacher", fully recommend

Ahhh, the nostalgia of it.
I had the vaguest memory of this theme tune from over thirty years ago and hey presto I'm listening to it on Youtube.
I'm still waiting for the club mix!

"Hello, this is a computer". Heeheehee!

One could still get away with that in the 80s. It would sound as ridiculous now as some might suppose that machine looks (but I don't).

Oh yes oh yes oh yes, I remember this! Was it Fred Harris singing the theme tune? And who was the woman?

I'm guessing from the credits in another Basic Maths video that she's Mary Waterhouse.

Do you have the end credits to 'Basic Maths', containing the tune without the b-b-b sss stuff?
jflitter 5 years ago
Probably the best theme tune for a schools programme ever... slightly disturbing though - all that 'b-b-b' 'sssss' stuff used to scare me a bit!
