The Nimitz class can go about 31-33 knots depending on hull condition. I believe the Enterprise may be a little faster because of her hull design, said to be more of a "cruiser" design, which to me means longer and thinner (less drag). Reports of 50- 60 mph or knots is just BS.. They do have about 300,000 hp but that just aint enough to make 100k tons go that fast.
I am a plank owner of CVN 70 (USS Carl Vinson) sister ship of the truman and yes they can do 30 knots in reverse and then some ! I was a HT and stood watch in central control and at 30 knots, we were doing like 200 rpm on shafts at screw's, at battle flank we were doing much much more rpm ( and seabeatle's claim of 60 mph is pretty close) and by 35 degree rate of turn, thats how much list the ship can handle during the turn ! btw, have you ever even been to sea ?

well, the chinese can certainly buy the expertise from the french and from us contractors. They would be falling over themselves to get a CVN contract with the chinese...
A CVN may be the biggest target out there, but it is kinda hard for a sub to launch tactical air strikes, land Marines, intercept hijacked airliners, take part in short-of-war ops, or make high visibility port visits. Plus the sub has to make it through the screen, which includes at least two 688i...
Can anyone say "TARGET"?? Incredible engineering... but one torpedo from the "Silent Service"and all that muscle is in Davy Jones locker. Can't hide from satelites or satelite deployed weapons. How many support vessels does she need? One fast attach submarine is cheaper and can extend greater firepower pound for pound of water displacement. Sea trials are a blast though. Push her to the limits!
At 2:59 they show the Machinery room and one of the turbines. They don't just let anybody down there. What is this video from? I was on the USS Carl Vinson when we did this type of sea trails in July
umm there were 5 full size US aircraft carriers lost during world war 2..
there were also may escort carriers lost but here is a list of the big ones.. USS Princeton sunk oct 24 1944. USS Yorktown sunk june 7 1942.. USS Hornet sunk oct 26 1942.. USS Lexington sunk may 8 1942. USS Wasp sunk sept 15 1942. There were also large fires on the

If all this money we give to build these floating airports were instead going to fight hunger in Africa (or just for other social needs within the U.S.), the whole world would be a much better place
I have no issue with helping people around the world; BUT it should start here. Do you remember Mogadishu in Somalia when we tried to help them and what happened. If not look up black hawk down.
whoops, I think you meant to say "if a couple Iranian Silkworm missiles somehow managed to make it past the CBG's defenses her sisters would show up within the week and finish the entire nation to a fine grey ash"
Nah, Iran has plenty of S-300s with fiber optically networked rardar defense grids (far better than the Serbians had when they downed multiple F-117s). CIWS won't do anything to protect you against new Silkworms and Sunburns either. Too fast.
very good video brings back memories, CVN 72 from 00-05. Speed is all relative, (loaded or not) fully loaded it drafts 42 feet deep, unloaded 38, fastest I've seen was almost 40 knots. any faster and the screws cavitate too badly causing things to come apart (kittyhawk). These type of ships are very advanced, most classified, but trust me, during a break away we could easily out run anything after a mile. the counter measures are to combat any force against it, mainly Godzilla. MM3 Freeman A-DIV
how can it weigh only 100,000 tons fully loaded thats only 200,000 pounds? it just said it can hold 5000 men, even saying each guy weighed a hundred pounds that would be 500,000 pounds, plus bombs and planes?
I was on TRUMAN 01-05 did many sea trials. this video caught one of my watch stations as an eng. in A DIV. the ram room brought back memories. sea trials were a great experience.-thanks for the video.- i left TRUMAN as A-DIV DCPO
You can find out the true speed by doing 1.35 x SqRoot of the length at the water line or get really froggy and use the Froude number. Nimitz is 1040 feet at water line so theoretically its hull speed is 43 knots or i've seen 1.51 used which would give 48 knots. 43 knots is about 49 mph and or 79 kph. This is of course only the theoretical hull speed. Power and screw design and a lot of other factors come into play, but interesting to guess :)
I have had buddies on the Nimitz and Lincoln, and they assure me that the carrier outruns the whole fleet by a day, and can push somewhere around 60+ knots. Pretty incredible...
umm, definetly not 60 knots. thats like 111 km/h. they have a max speed of between 30 and 35 knots, depending on the weeather. my brother i a helm on the abraham lincoln, same class...same performance...

Well, of all the countries with subs, only a fraction has fast attack nuclear subs that can run 30+knts. The majority of the subs out there besides the US, England and Russia are Electo-Diesel subs that run around 26-30knts maximum. So yeah the Nimitz class in most cases can outrun subs. But its not the issue of outrunning them, but avoiding them all together. Because despite the speed, if a sub is in weapons range the Nimitz is done for if countermeasures fail. They cant outrun a torpedo.
Please call it Britain and not England, everyone here is British, but we aren't all English and not everyone wants to be English lol, plenty of Brits are happy staying Welsh, Scottish or Irish thanks.
It's not the Bush. CVN-75 is the Truman as brucktroll said, but even ignoring that, the F-14 Tomcats and A-6 Intruders are out of service, so that makes this a several-years-old Truman video at least. Not that it matters, you see one Nimitz carrier and you've seen them all... Wait for the Ford class carrier for something new!
@dragonscape99 In 1971, whei I was on the USS Independence we raced the USS America, we reached speeds in excess of 60 knots. The Indy and America were conventional powered. I am sure that the newer Nuclear powered CVANs are even faster. The Indy, now retired had 4 main engines each rated at 128,000 HP. During the full power run the noise and vibration in the engine room was both deafining and thrilling.
they are faster than the destoyers who are part of the battle group ! I was aboard CVN 70 while it was still being built (plank owner) and made all its sea trials and eventually its world cruise in 1983 . these ships MOVE !
