  • Im a retired lawyer age 55 with 67 hours in a 17 and really enjoyed learning about orbit necessities. You teach very well. My question has always been why does on have to get to orbit so fast (12 minutes to reach 24K mph, could one just coast to orbit over say a slow burn up to that speed? and on the way down, why can't thrusters be used to slow the ship down to avoid the Columbia disaster? Couldn't a design be made to thrust back like on a jet?. Thanks for teaching a new viewer.

  • @skipsassy1 The reason that you have to get into orbit quickly is drag. Until you have the velocity to "be in orbit", you need to use aerodynamic lift to keep your self up. In order to make the same amount of lift at higher and higher altitudes, you need to go faster and faster, this means that you run the risk of overheating the craft, and you waste energy to drag. So it's most efficient to get out of the atmosphere quickly, and then build tangential velocity before you fall back down.

  • @n7275 Regarding returning to earth using reverse thrust. It is possible, however, you need to arrest almost all of your orbital velocity. This means that you need to take enough fuel to do that, and fuel is heavy. A better solution to safe reentry would be a high-aspect-ratio hypersonic glider that would circle the earth several times bleeding off kinetic energy in the process.

  • thanks

  • I love Orbiter, I just wish it wasnt so unforgiving =/

  • Cool video! What program you using for recording videos?
