im sat here a little drunk and i cant help thinkin what robert johnson might have thought if he were able to sit and listen to claptons output, ie yardbirds, cream etc and then hear him laud him so much and then try to copy him not for note. can one of you scientist guys get a time machine together already. shit. oh, but learn how to clone my liver first.
"One notable segment features Clapton performing in the hotel room in Dallas, Texas, that served as a make-shift studio in 1937 for Johnson to cut his legendary recordings."
Robert Johnson outplays Clapton and Page, and all the rest...Clapton as great as he is needs someone to accompany him on the song, RJ did it all himself
Without question, Eric is easily one of the greatest talents ever...yet even he needs someone to accompany him to play what Robert Johnson could play solo...all those rockers know who the man is, its Mr Robert Johnson
Actually, he did RJ songs on his own as well, most of them as complicated this. But RJ's guitar playing was magic, he must have found a way to move all of his fingers as if they were all individual creatures.
I've been watching videos of people covering Johnson songs, and I'd been avoiding this one because I was afraid Clapton would rearrange the song, and I think the original is perfect. Suffice it to say I'm very pleasantly surprised.
i agree with you but i think in generaly Eric Clapton is better guitar player then jimmy page period have you ever heard jimmy been called god now have you
If you're going to tackle Robert Johnson and try to do it right, you're going to need all the help you can get. I think Doyle and EC do a great job, but I've said that before.

and you don't think Robert Johnson rehearsed? Back in his day they did all sorts of things with guitars so they could play on their own. $10 is better in one guy's pocket than split two ways. Ask Big Bill. Sure, Eric's worked hard to re-create the sound, if you can, let's see ya!

Eric Clapton is miles away from Robert Johnson. Not in terms of technical ability; he probably has more of that. The feeling that Robert Johnson invested in his music was what I think made it so special. I bet Eric Clapton rehearses to play better; Robert Johnson would probably have done it to feel better.
this just shows how great robert johnson was,it takes 2 guitarists to cover it! its the best copy iv heard so far but its still not as fast and free flowing as the classic.
True, but Clapton plays Stones In My Passway which is basically the same song just different words in the last session solo. I prefer that arrangement because it is a lot less busy and the feeling has more of a chance to come out.
This is probably the closest anybody will ever come in trying to match Robert Johnson's sound. Eric Clapton is sooooooooooooo talented. ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT!
That break down at 1:34 is original to the Robert Johnson recording. I think EC and Bramhall do this song as much justice as any cover I've heard. Listening to these 2 great guitarist makes me appreciate more what Robert Johnson was able to do way back when.
ehh, I may just be in denial. but i think it was more choreographed and if left to their own improvising abilities, Clapton would spank Bramhall. your right though, he's very good. You should check them both out on "Have you ever loved a woman" from Crossroads fest. Bramhall goes nuts on it
my 12 year old lad practices 3 hours a day ,sings, plays guitar in our local bars,Eric your guitar playing is insperational for him.thanks steve & Dainel almeria spain best wishes to every body
This is just outstanding... what I've always wanted to hear EC do is play RJ the way he's meant to be played... This is a musical triumph.

Dude!! Come on, you know it ain't true.
Bluessontlavie 3 years ago
that is a legitimate statement...but...the problem is there is a reverse side to that that will never be known...
how would johnson have compared to clapton playing electric chicago style blues?or playing "tears in heaven" for that matter.
clapton is a guitarist "guitarist"..multi-faceted,playing all styles all the while retaining a sound that is unmistakably "clapton".
i love R.J....but its unfare to compare 29 songs to claptons lifetime of performances

I'm sure clapton can play this by himself but yes, RJ, best ever.

earlier in this series clapton said he could do it but it was extreamly hard and he had to practice alot
