  • I think if you plateau you also need to mix up your work out routine. You need to not make your muscles do the same routine all the time.

  • My favorite exercise video EVER is still Dolph Lundgren's Maximum Potential. It was made in the 1980s but is still awesome with the best warm up. You can find parts of it on YouTube.

  • Actually what Tyler is talking about here..for substitutes...is for ppl who actually "work out"...For instance...when he says eat Peanut butter..for bed time snack...I wouldn't recommend that for someone who doesn't work out...But for someone who does..they eat and need alot of protein..Someone who doesn't work out...that will turn to Fat very fast..For a night time snack for the latter..I would recommend Cereal..The exact opposite of what Tyler said..lol.cause its carbs but is also fiber.

  • Another good way for the women with two kids to get some exercise in would be to play with them, chase them around, take them to the park and stuff.

  • I have 2 kids and do that Alll the time...Doesnt work!

  • As tiring as it is, playing with your kids doesnt burn as many calories as you would think. unless youre playing a sport or active game, all the toddler chasing, bending over, picking up kids, whatever, doesnt do much.

  • Oh yeah....hungry all the time? Fiber helps you feel full longer. There are some really good fiber bars that taste good. The fruity ones are my favorites. Raw almonds and pistachios are good to carry with you as well.

  • I have been doing P90X with my stepdad. There is a gym by my parent's house that uses the Beach Body routines. I have been feeling so much better just going 4 days a week. The trainer who owns the gym is very helpful and understanding. He sends emails and text messages to encourage.

  • Another question, my husband plays football on the weekends and the day after, his calf muscles cramp really bad. What can he do to prevent that. Does he need more potassium and water? Does he need to stretch more?

  • I was recently put on medicine to lower my blood pressure and so I want to cut down on my salt intake. However, I love salt soooooooooo much - what is a yummy, filling, healthy snack alternative to paotato chips or cheese? (I am allergic to peanuts, nuts, and a large number of vegs and fruits so I have to be really careful!)

  • I work in physical rehab & don't recommend certain standing exercises for a back injury. Lifting should be minimal with no twising or bending forward from the waist to lift - always use proper body mechanics and use your quads by bending with your knees. Ab exercise/core strengthening is good, but heal first and focus on slow, gentle streches. I also agree that protein is way better than fat before bed, like low-fat/fat-free dairy (yogurt or cheese). Just my opinion. Your great Emily & Taylor!

  • I have to disagree with Tyler's theory that fat is best....actually protein is better. My understanding is that fat is as quick, if not quicker, to become stored fat as carbs are. I agree with Tyler's belief that juice, etc, "diets" are crap! The South Beach Diet is an excellent plan for eating.....low fat protein, lots of fruits and vegetables, and whole grain complex carbs. Keep your body moving! Shin splints are minor tears to the ligaments and muscles and are usually due to overuse.

  • The comment on subtracting 500-1000 calories a day from your recommended intake isnt really a great idea. If your already overweight you are probably way over anyways. I suggest starting with just the recommended number first. Personally the best weight loss for me, (32 pounds!!) was following the canadas food guide and 4 workouts a week!

  • Another great option for shinsplint prevention: Using a stability ball: Sit on a low bench or aerobic step. Stretch legs out with toes pointed. Place stability balll on the laces of your shoes (the top of the foot). Push against the stability ball with your arms outstretched while simultaneously pulling toes back to a flexed position. Do 8 to 12 repetitions, holding the flexed position for up to five seconds each rep. Strenghens shins marvelously.

  • A great way to "diet" is using the glycemic charts. The lower the glycemic count the better the food.

    Also, as far as motivation, find something you like to do and do that ie: walking, dancing, riding a bike, swimming etc.

    For the mom, how about Tabata? All you do is 4 min. and it's the equivalent of an hour's workout. Look it up on YouTube, there are lots of vids on it.

    I'm diabetic and Tyler is right about what to eat before bed. Always protein! :)
