it says mobile suit gundam, not gundam wing, i mean there was alot of gundam wing shown because it was more popular back in the days, i mean the black man built a ez8, that is not from gundam wing.
I remember seeing this commercial when I was a kid. At first I didn't think much of it but now my friend introduced me to building gundams and I built one in 3 or 4 hours I think on my first one. It was the 1/144 strike noir gundam. Now i'm currently doing a custom paint job on a mobile Cgue.
@jettcenterfold well if you paint it well and do every single detail, then it's 1 hour. also they painted in and panelined it too, so yeah. once i did that, clean the parts carefully and panelined them, it took me 5 minutes or more
@StrikeFreedom986 It's probably more like Ban Dai America dosen't have a clue. We were all new to Gundam back then and we didn't know much about the alternate series apart from Gundam Wing.
I threw up when I saw this commercial! They put Epyon's power coupling on the antenna, and claimed that a 1/100 HG model (yes model with an "e") would take 17 hours to build! I could eat the sprues and shit out a complete gundam faster than that--not to mention that I would have all the parts in the right place. And one more thing; gunpla is cool and all, but it's not badass like they try to make it. ;)
@narutoman876 0rly? that's not what they were hinting in the commercial. I built a Perfect Grade, wired, and painted it in well under 10 hours--of course not in one sitting =p
@GundamLegacyExtreme I know i brought a gundam f91 1/100 scale heavygun and g cannon let me tell you not pretty the limbs on both models keep falling of the weapons wouldnt stay in the hands.
This is why I tend to avoid the older kits... sure you have to respect them... but I don't really like the fact that all they can do Is just stand there and NOT look pretty... only 2-3 colors of plastic and you need to paint your ass off to make'em look good... I suck at painting so I don't want to deal with them.
@nightslash3535 yeah, a novice can put together a crappy looking thing in less than an hour. However, if you want a GOOD looking model it'll take much longer(even panel lining seriously increases the time needed to build a model)
@shawtycrusito It means the way of building them is more complex and the longer it should take...although the commercial greatly exaggerates how long it actually took to build one.
Such fond memories of buying these kits and thinking I was a badass for completing a level 5... I didn't even trim the nub marks... Still badass though!
@BlackAce1229 Actually, it was level 1=First Grade, speed grade or no grade, levels 2-5= High Grade, levels 6-9= Master Grade, levels 9 and 10= Perfect Grade.
I have to order these guys online still. They stopped carrying them RIGHT when I got into them... Its a mega pain when all the instructions are in japanese! But they're cheaper that way it seems ;P
I think the reason some of those models took so long is because the people building them were rookies. Right now, I can build a 1/144 HG in about 5-6 hours, and with detailing, about another 3 or 4 tops. Main reason is because I like my models to be blemish free.
Back on the early 00's, Bandai Entertainment released domestic versions of these models, similar to the way they release anime here. These domestic kits were the same as the Japanese versions, but in addition to the grading system, Bandai printed a 10-point difficulty scale on the boxes, making kit complexity clear for American modelers. Bandai stopped distributing the kits in 2004, and as a result, American retailers now import kits directly from Japan, and the level system is no longer used.
That's because unlike years ago, anime isn't as broad as it use to be. Choose to disbelieve me on this if you want, but it may have to do with whether anime franchises and their merchandises can grab a big enough audience in America.
I read a something on Anime Insider magazine where a fan asked an editor why there aren't Gundam00 model kits in the U.S. The editor said how the Gundam franchise in America hasn't grabbed as much attention as it use to in the 90s.
For the life of me, I can't understand why I never bought any of those model kits myself at the time. I guess it's the fact that while I liked watching Gundam Wing, I've never been enough of a fanatic to get engaged into any of the merchandises.
Thinking back to it now, I probably should've bought some of the models when I had the chance, even if I wasn't engaged in the whole Gundam plot.
back then around the time this commercial came out, HG's were popular and the creators of the kits and even the publishers had them at different "LEVELS" 1,2,3,4,5. supposibly if you can do level 5 like nothing, then the rest are too easy. the popularity went down and the MG's and PG's were rising from the ashes.

these models are fucking easy to build thats why. itd be understandable if maybe those were PERFECT GRADE or some master grade ones for 10 fucking hours including snipping off all the nubs from the sprues and painting and detailing and stuff.

I build way faster than these fuckers. I would finish a master Grade level 8 in just 3 and a half hours. the truth. but I kinda feel bad since that it's not that they build slow, It's just that they get frusterated with the instructions.
