Tried to drum and play guitar in a grindcore jam session, and the results were barely deserving of a myspace page. Just about any sort of loud vocals can work in grindcore (but only because I like untight and raw vocals in some cases), but I assure you, no one would last a minute as a grindcore vocalist without practice.

I wouldn't get in to genres of music, but there was alot more going on than slayer, metalica,megadeth shit like that going on back then. gore started in like the early 90s. and lets not forget napalm death their first album came out in 86. thats pretty much the start of grind. music didnt go from metallica and iron maiden to fuckin deicide and napalm death in a day. metallica and Slayer pretty much started thrash but not death metal. they influenced it but they do not sond close to death metal.

Death metal spawned at the same time/a little later in the States. Tape trading between the two formed a melding of the scenes and here we are today. I personally don't like Metallica and I fucking despise linkin park and green gay, but Metallica did start thrash/speed metal. But we have Slayer to thank for starting deathmetal (kinda deathmetal) which later spawned into Deathcore, melodic deathmetal, and grindcore. I don't like Slayer too much either though. Both are way out dated and over done but they were the first step away from the 80's bullshit that people called "heavy".

Are you sure about what you're presenting us here? Grindcore has nothing to do with Death Metal, it has completely other origins. When did Grindcore start? I'd say 1987 with Carcass and Napalm Death releasing their debuts. That's only one year after "Reign in Blood". And by that time the Death Metal was just at it's very beginning. Infact Grind evolved from Hardcore Punk like Siege, Heresy, Asocial (their 1984-Demo is grinding like hell!)

in general your right, grindcore came from hardcore punk.

but i think that those two genres had a big influence on each other in the first years, so grindcore has to do with death metal, but it didnt directly evolve from it.

(death metal started 1984/85 with master (who recorded an album which unfortunately wasnt released till 2003) and possessed (seven churches) so it really was at the beginning.)

but: blasts were NOT limited to grindcore or death metal. they weren't even limited to metal or hc punk! they were invented by some jazz drummers back in the 1950s and 60s and just are some sort of faster played polka rhythm...

Well but you Blastbeat-History is a bit difficult. First off, you should define the kind of blast you are talking about. Is it the Slayer-Thrash-Blast kind of thing? One on the kick, than one on the snare? Or do you mean the real machine gun kind of blast?

now, the traditional blast IS nothing more than kick - snare - kick - snare and so on (ok, hihats with every kick). its just played fast as hell.

and that is nothing more than the basic polka rhythm. but much faster. so i dont look at the speed, just at the notes.

I'm into jazz and I own a pretty voluminous collection including drummers like "Philly" Joe Jones, Tony Williams, Max Roach, Jack DeJohnette, Elvin Jones, Art Taylor, Joe Chambers and many others...and belief me, I never heard them playing a beat that made me think "Oh, that sounds like some blastbeat!". Maybe sometimes at the end of songs they did like a little solo doing one-handed rolls on the snare but as a actual beat there is no real blast in jazz. Don't belief Wiki at that point :D

i already saw 2 old videos, one of buddy rich, where jazz drummers actually played blasts, but not as a rhythm. they used them as breaks (and not even slow).

but unfortunately i cant find them anymore. the buddy rich vid was taken off here on youtube and i forgot who drummed at the other one.

so blasts WERE played in jazz. not very often and not very long, but the basic trad blast was used as break a few times.

but i agree, not as actual beats. just as longer breaks.

I watched a solo by Tony Williams, from the mid 70's, and it's just as you said. Rather a break or fill...nut very accurate but quite fast.

But the real purpose of a blastbeat (in my humble opinion) is to form a kind of layer underneath guitar riffs. The interesting thing is, that guitar riffs can be very slow but fast blastbeats will make them sound more dynamic. This is what I call the Dark-Funeral-Effect :D
