totally crap, leftism may have the appearance of tolerance, but its a vila ideology de-humanizing the individual in favor or borg-like-collectivist thinking.
While I would agree that there is some amount of bias in the school system, I think this is more or less a straw man argument. Women's studies and peace studies tend to be leftist but those are the just single departments in the university system. Also there are plenty of conservative private schools out there and, while most of my professors are relatively leftist, all have been generally respectful and when grading papers grade so on the quality of arguments made and evidence used.
this is exactly why america is in the shithole it is in now...companies wanting people with a degree...to get the degree you have to go to these institutions...you get indoctrinated in these institutions to think a certain way...also...just to put it out there...imo most of the people coming from and working for these "institutions"...need to be...institutionalized...long live on the job training...for the job you want...not "core classes" you will never need for the field you wish to study...
@leonidas512 ...of course a phone company doesnt want someone with a womans studies degree...they want someone with a degree in a field that will help their company...if they(any company) would just train someone in the first place rather than want only someone schooled for a specific area the country would be better off...cant argue with your views on the left though
Republican pieces of shit want absolute corporate plutocratic control of everything, and this includes silencing those last few rational voices from professors. Privatize everything, who will be able to speak freely ? Capitalism is an absolute moral and functional failure. This totalitarian gambit of the right is a final effort to prevent a complete change. But guess what . The fake grass-roots Koch Brothers Americans for prosperity, the fake tea party, and all the rightist think tanks: fail.
And for the record, when I was a freshmen in 2002, my economics teacher told me the free market was the best possible way to allocate resources, and that the SEC would prevent Wall Street greed from ever balancing the card pyramid to high or too dangerously. Well shit then in 2008 I got laid off as the economy tanked while State Intervention kept Wall Street aliv . I wonder if that guy is still teaching. Maybe Horowitz ought to go after him as a propagator of dangerous ideas!
Harrassment against liberal faculty in this country reminds me of the episode in V: The Miniseries (1984), where the aliens fake an anti-alien conspiracy among scientists. They use this to dupe people into mistrusting all scientists, and ignoring their advice- the advice of the most educated and intelligent people who could have warned them of the aliens' plans.
Last year a college history teacher actually told me that she sees her role as a history teacher as merely a vehicle to push her leftist political agenda on her students. At least she was honest.
If the right wants to be represented in academia, it needs to check itself out of the mental hospital it went into many moons ago. Seriously, the right is intellectually bankrupt today, so it is no surprise that the intellectual movement is dominated by the left.
The fundamental issue facing the republic is the unprecedented rise of corporate power, and those on the right call for lower taxes.
Get serious about your analysis, and then get back to us. We would very much enjoy a conversation.
If you want to be told what to think, go to an American k-12 school. There, you will be brainwashed into an unquestioning, mindless, and fatally dangerous pseudo patriotism, full of nonsensical, easily debunked revisionist garbage.
College SHOULD serve as a healthy balance to the nationalistic propaganda that pervades our k-12 system.
If it's really that bad by now in the US it's sad. I can just say from personal experience (which was at other times and places though) that I had largely "left-wing" lecturers, too, but as an intelligent and critical student you actually know if someone is giving a one-sided view and therefore is indoctrinating. Also I have to hold to my own professors credit that critical thinking and diverting opinions were appreciated and rewarded. Humanities and social sciences "live" from contradictions
Universities in America are citadels of political correctness and centers of Marxist brainwashing. And the taxpayers are paying for it. David Horowitx knows what he is talking about.
@tristramshandy3 Jefferson was NOT on the left. Martin Luther King was a republican who hated abortion. GET YOUR FACTS STRAIGHT. Since you consider these two men intelligent, I have now named two intelligent right-wingers. want more? Hayek Ludwig von Mises Benjamin Franklin Gouverner Morris Mark Steyn Rush Limbaugh Milton Friedman Evan Sayet Jonah Goldberg John Stossel John Locke Dinesh D'souza Reagan Adams Ron Paul
@Dadutta MLK also hated war and social injustice- that's why he was organizing a poor people's movement. Jefferson was anti-religion, pro-education; hey, JUST like most of my liberal friends.
Friedman, Stossel? LOL! That's adorable. I'm glad you think those ideological imbeciles are smart.
But why are we dealing in abstraction?
I will debate you on any issue and show that I am far smarter than you.
@tristramshandy3 With the greatest of respect Tristam, do you honestly think you could out wit Milton Friedman in a debate concerning economics? I think it would be wise to consider this point sincerely before hurling insults at the man. May I ask what you have achieved in your lifetime that gives you the right to refer to such a brilliant mind as an imbecile? May I also ask if you prefer Keynesian economics (an entirely defensible system) or you just reject capitalism in general?
@allweneedofhell compared to today's right wingers, Friedman is certainly not an imbecile. My main beef with him is that I don't hear him stress the importance of education and the flow of information as prerequisites, without which, his precious capitalism is as useless as any other "ism".
My theory: educationalism. It means that I would prefer a capitalist country with a well educated population to a socialist country without a good education system; and the converse is true as well.
@tristramshandy3 Then how can the poor people of the USA send their kids to school, when the rich destroyed the middle class? Its class warfare, division of wealth and education, its crimminal. Equal opportunity is equality, freedom and rights are a god given right to all peoples around the world, yet the rich steal their right to prosper, to live on their lands, free from wars, free from pain. Pres Andrew Jackson said if we over throw governments and impose our rule, that it will happen here
@tristramshandy3 You are simply wrong. Get your facts STRAIGTH. MLK was a Republican, he would have despised you for your abortions. Friedman, Hayek, Mises, Franklin, these were geniuses who eclipse you and your clownish idols. FUCK YOU
@Dadutta first of all, hello. How are you? Secondly, if you read the speeches of King, you will read the works of a FAR LEFT liberal who is primarily concerned with social justice - code for communism according to the whackos on the right.
King was far left- so was Jesus.
The dude so many of you numskulls pretend to worship.
@tristramshandy3 Jesus was not a liberal. Jesus Christ would never support the abortion of an unborn child, he would never support same sex marriage because it is not natural (and you never see male animals humping each other or females humping each other), and he would never allow evil terrorists back into a country that they want to blow up and kill as many people as possible. Jesus was not a Democrat or a Republican, and you should be ashamed that you compared him to a political party.
@tristramshandy3 Do you even understand that China has a worse poverty rate than the US? Communism in a perfect form would not be so bad, but Communism has never been fair and never will be because their is no such thing as TRUE Communism. And btw, rich people give to the needy all the time. If you take money away from the people who have it, who will donate or give away money? The answer is no one because they have little the way it is. You are crazy and I am just going to leave it at that.
@Jakepod34 Who mentioned China? I totally understand that communism is not compatible with industrialism- too much specialization. I have never advocated communism as a solution to capitalism.
My reply was about the politics of jesus christ as portrayed in legends written long ago (and since "updated" for political purposes many times over).
As he is represented in that book- he is a COMMUNIST. He owns no possessions and shares of everything he creates equally with all. Those are his ACTIONS.
@tristramshandy3 Communists OUTLAW RELIGION and KILL those who defy their law. THE PEOPLE ARE CONTROLLED 100% BY THE GOVERNMENT HOW IS THAT JESUS-LIKE? Jesus allowed his followers to have FREE WILL, in which the people can make their OWN CHOICES. You are telling me that Communism allows free will to the people? Last I heard, that is what Democracy flourishes on... the hard work and free will of the people. I am Catholic, do not pretend that you know more about Jesus Christ than me.
@Jakepod34 first of all RELAX. Stop SCREAMING at me with your CAPITAL LETTERS :). Secondly, can you answer the following questions please: what possessions did Jesus own; and, what did he do with excess food that he created?
Did he do what a capitalist would do- sell extra stuff for a profit? OR, did he do what a communist would have done- given it all away to those who needed it?
@tristramshandy3 You don't need to know the life of Jesus to say that he was not a socialist/communist. He preaches selflessness and charity...that is not the same as having a government dictating a policy of ideological enforcement and economic distribution of capital by a ruling government class/bourgeoisie that has been proven by history to be a dismal failure. Selflessness and giving through ones own volition is utterly independent of a state controlled ideology.
@Rammagith I will repeat, because it seems you struggle to comprehend. Communism is a system where everyone gets according to their need, and everyone gives according to their ability.
Jesus PERSONIFIED this belief system by his actions, which were 100% compatible with communism.
He was a COMMUNIST. He did NOT believe in selling excess for profit, he believed in GIVING IT AWAY to the NEEDY.
This isn't about government policy- this is about a man's actions (according to tall tales)
@tristramshandy3 It's not that I struggle to comprehend, it's just that you have a warped view of what communism is, which is a theory Marx created where property and production are controlled by the state, and every country who followed this were corrupt, brutal or genocidal, and destitute. Again, Jesus advocates giving and selflessness, not state totalitarianism, which is the center of communism. This isn't to be contested what I am saying is fact.
@Rammagith no industrialized country has ever attempted communism. it's strange that so many in the USA refer to dictatorial regimes as communist, when they don't resemble communism in any way, shape, or form.
if we are discussing jesus and his personal politics, according to legends, I think one must conclude he was a communist. I base this judgment on his ACTIONS. Do you have anything to refute that his actions are clearly those of a communist?
@scotts689 well, let's look at what communism actually IS. It is a system where everyone gets what they need, and contributes what they can. It is an egalitarian system at its heart.
So, was the USSR egalitarian? No. Therefore, it was not communism. It was simple totalitarianism where a small group seized power and used it to their advantage.
@mutabrev I have looked at the ACTIONS of Jesus, as they are relayed in old, suspicious texts, and it is crystal clear that his ACTIONS are those of a communist. He did not OWN property or possessions- JUST like communism, and he gave away excess food stuffs to the needy- JUST like communism.
