You mention this auditorium was going to be torn down and the Wurlitzer organ being removed. Has this happened and what is the fate of the Wurlitzer organ?
Nothing quite matches the wurlitzer console. By the way, the internet is conspicuously absent of articles on the largest mighty wurlitzer built, which was the one at dekalb/gurler, Illinois. Five manuals. It contained every rank ever built by wurlitzer, but no attention is paid. Probably because it was only around for five years.
Funny that, there's not much about the big Midmer Losh in Atlantic City either. Ok its been unplayable at times but you'd think it was iconic enough to be recorded a bit more
Recording devices in wwII which is when the organ was in its prime condition were not good enough to capture to subtle nuances of the grand organ's sound. They did record it in 1998 when they restored the right chamber, but at that point the organ was only 1/4 operational. The right chamber again slipped into disrepair, and has only recently been restored. I think it would be better if they just restored it entirely before they record again.
I see. It must be pretty hard to get an instrument as big as that all in A1 condition at the same time. I've always wondered what it really sounds like as I am interested in Harrison & Harrison organs, I beleive Donald Harrison was involved with the Midmer Losh design. I've only ever heard a bit of a recording of Bach's T&F in Dminor, and it was sadly out of tune (though again, how to tune such an organ in one go?)
According to the organ society, It would take 6years fully funded to completely restore the instrument. It has 33000 pipes you know. Check out the video in my favorites.
Very nice! I play the piano, but don't get a chance to play the organ very often. You did an excellent job of making the transition. Thank you for sharing the video.
There is 2 manual 5 rank Wurlitzer in the theatre at Stanford Hall at Stanford-on-Soar which is only about 4 o 5 miles from were I live. The theatre is having some work done to bring it back to its former glory.
I just read on the cos website that The Redcar and Cleveland local council have now decided to demolish the James Finegan Hall , and i do hope that the wurlitzer's future may still be bright in a new location
I play at Chaminade High school in Mineola. My name is Dan, I'm 13 and I'm there almost every day after school on the Morton/Austin/Wurlitzer/Barton in Darby Auditorium
Very well played, ,I only ever found out about these instruments when i was 14, i'm 16 now and had always wished i had taken lessons but it's a bit too late , however i do have basic keyboard skills, and scotland only has two organs one of which has just been removed due to flood damage,, back to the point,if the hall is to be pulled down you should email the cinema organ Society, they will be more than happy to help you out ,
Love it!!!!! So glad to see youth still playing the pipe organ. Looks like a wonderful instrument also!! You've got that feeling down also! I'm very impressed. I am very much looking forward to seeing more from you at the organ!!!!!
I think you show true promise,I enjoyed your playing, keep up the good work,-is there no way that your local council can class the organ as of 'historic'etc interest to save her?I don't think we should lose our heritage, that organ is a part of it - I can bet you it played in a cinema - please fight to protect it - how about a petition - I bet loads would sign!
James, I hope you get to play many more Wurlitzers thoughout your life! Where is the hall? The organ will be moved and stored, right? In this day, nobody would just destroy it. Where can we find out more about it? Cheers! Michael
very very good my friend, i love the train impression
