I just have to air this... This guy has become a huge influence to me, and as i'm relatively new to guitar, he has tought me how to create interesting chord changes and how to slip and slide through the minor and the major. I'm not quite catching what you mean by lack of melody. Maybe u´re hearing the bridge part (where he kinda rhythm solos).. that might be, though I like the chords he plays quite a bit. Bearing in mind he's singing much of his melody, I think his guitar work accompanies him quite well.

For the purpose of the song his voice is the melody and the guitar is harmony. If he were to put more melody into his guitar it would be over powered if not considered wrong by a lot of well trained musicians.
