Back in the early 80's were taught (M-1 Abrams Cremen) avoid the Hind at all cost, don't attempt to fire on it and hope it doesn't see you. This is not bullshit and if anyone was a tanker back them you will have heard that to. The Hind was a badass S.O.B.
@airbrusha19k even the abrams is vulnerable to a helicopter, isnt the exhaust like 1000+ degrees? so a heat seeker could lock on it? but even a few rockets to the exhaust port or top of the turret could knock out most tanks, and disable every tank i know of. i wouldnt want to cross paths with a hind in any thing that wasnt a fighter, and even then it has confirmed kills on jet aircraft. but i still think the apache has higher quality pilots, even if the engines are more delicate than the hind's.
Nevertheless the Afghans called it "The angel of death" and it gave them a hard time until the CIA sent them shoulder launched missiles. But that was 20+ years ago.
@Gianni7381 Firstly, the Mi-24 design goes back to 60s, so it is not really a top-tech machine, secondly, avoiding SAM missiles is pretty harder for an helicopter, anyway there have been many upgrades for the Mi-24, it is still absolutely a powerful and useful machine.
I think it's every infantryman's nightmare to see a chopper with weapons onboard aiming at you. The Apache and MI24 are different due to different doctrines. Sure the Army could strap on some 2500 HP engines, but the Apache really isn't meant to charge right in.
Yes the Russians made some mean equipment and spent a lot of money on it. To bad they couldn't give their people a decent standard of living like Western Europe has good hospitals, plentiful food, decent health care and housing and an honest police force.
@Suyamu I work with 2 former Soviet academics they migrated to Australia to get decent health care 4 their son they said they had to bribe Russian Health Officials 2 get treatment for him. They had to bribe Housing Officials 4 semi decent housing. Please explain how many American or Western refugees fled to Russian for political freedom of speech & a better standard of living, it seems migration was always Soviet to Western World?

@Suyamu People started leaving the Soviet Union as soon as the door opened because the 70's and 80's were bad times for the Russian people.

@DRAGONIRONFIST Well yeah, 'attack helicopter' meaning the basic 7-kill reward. The Cobra goes with the NATO-aligned forces, and the Hind for the "Comm-bloc" forces.

i think ducati000 was referring to afghanistan as the russian vietnam. hinds were invulnerable to most ground fire but stingers proved very effective (even using flares the size, position and lack of heat baffles on their engine exhausts made them very vulnerable to IR missiles).
@torped0vegas stingers were not THAT effective as most people think
in 1987 on september 7th, a mi-24 was hit by 6 stinger rockets and could return to the base...
the bord engeneer died on the way to the military hospital by bleeding to death because a shrapnel disrupted his artery on the thigh, but pilot and operator survived the ambush unharmed
it depends on where you hit the helicopter
however, the mi-24 has the best survival rate of all military helicopters in history.
no argument, of course it depends where it gets hit. my point was that while it is very tough it is not suited to avoiding missiles. easily my favourite helicopter. so so ugly
@gazakind: Agreed. However even with its survivability Stingers having the capability of dealing damage was a threat. Drastically changing how the Hinds operate. Also Stingers could shoot down cargo planes while flying low. So yeah. |
To note the Mujahideen had more weapons and better than the taliban today :)
@torped0vegas: If you further study the two wars I don't agree that the Soviet Afghan war is equivalent to Vietnam. Vietnam was obviously more costly, waste more people, more civilian and military casualties, blind bombing of whole valleys and villages, more chaotic fighting, and unlike the Mujahideen the Viet Cong and the North Vietnamese Army were very much in control of the conflict. Having intelligence that practically knew almost everything USA was planning.
@1942tj fair enough, i don't really know either in that much detail. i just meant that the two are broadly comparable in that both the americans and russians had great advantage in resources and technology but did not succeed accordingly. mainly i just wanted to point out that ducati0000 did not deserve the hate mail he was receiving for his comment
of course the odds are not good for any heli with aa rockets coming at it. speed was not the point though. i was referring to design features of newer helis that minimise the target they present to a ground-launched IR rocket, eg placement, direction and baffling of engine exhausts (see AH64). Mi24 design does not incorporate these features, presumably because it was not foreseen that it would face manpads. thus, even using flares it still presents a big IR target..
@ducati0000 The vast majority of U.S. helicopters have very little hope if a missile gets on their tail... it's all about tactics; flying below radar and avoiding detection.
Aside from the fact that there were no russians (or hinds) in vietnam, the Stinger is an IR-guided missile which is what is generally refered to a "heat-seeking missile" and thats what flares are supposed to protect against by obscuring the heat signature. American Helicopters use the same.
@Aslambeek Not really, I sleep peacefully at night because I know MI 24's are a prey to a stinger missle; that's if they don't chop off their own rotor in a sharp turn.
@captainpegs07 rofl you nimrod, don't take it so literally, you oughta know I meant it was an awesome piece of metal and not something I wanna stick my penis in. Or else you're a inbred fkin' lost cause, I don't get you people who have to argue about every single thing on youtube? Why can't you just let me think the chopperfuck is sexy? Mind your own biznezz.
@captainpegs07 why? what does Dr Freud say regarding battle vehicle eroticism and its links to homosexuality? presumably anyone who likes vehicles that carry phallic symbols like, well, guns, rockets etc must also love the cock. what does that imply for the people who crew these vehicles? ps i agree with knightfgth (and many others), Mi24 is a sexy machine
@torped0vegas No there are feminine autos/vehicles. Toyota Prius, for example. My prior analysis was correct. Why dig back 5 pages on youetube comments, anyways?
as for being 5 pages back, i was replying to a comment someone left me and happened to see your argument with knightftgh. sorry if it brought up some things for you, do you want to talk about it? pull up a beanbag, let's rap.
just out of interest, what does freud say about men who love helicopters? and if i like a prius but not a hind, does that make me hetero or gay? and the next logical question is: which do you prefer?
@knigthfigth And what does that have to do with you? If you take it that literally which you do, you're not even worth arguing with. And it's a fucking helicopter it's not masculine neither is it feminine, but it IS sexy. Stop lurking around "Debate"tube trying to find something to argue about all the time, if you're so into arguing just become a fucking politician, now stfu.
The Hind have place for passegers that adds extra space and weight.
The Mi-24 Hind must be the best helicopter if you have to deliver a group of soldiers in a hot zone, waste a tank make some terror on the enemy and get out.
To compete the apache longbow there are the Mil Mi-28 Havoc or Ka-50 Black Shark.
All of those three are more hunters than the Hind.
@Mellowdev perhaps what model mi24 the new G looks like the battlefield bad company 1 and frankly the hind has A SHITLOAD MORE PROTECTION THEN SMALL APACHE IT COULD RAM IT
It sure looks powerful and cool, but isn't it, like all helicopters, extremely vulnerable to RPGs? I mean one heat seeking rocket, and this beast will probably go down.
They were vulnerable to stingers in Afghanistan, but that was in the 80s, like almost 30 years ago. Now they have countermeasures. No countermeasure is perfect, but no missile is either, fair game.
No they are not vulnerable to RPGs ,but they are to SAMs . RPGs are meant to defeat ground targets and only a 'monkey' will use it to try to hit a helicopter.
They're especially vulnerable to heat-seeking missiles because the exhaust vents are positioned underneath the rotors, without countermeasures those things will go down in one hit, I believe.
@Henners1991 USSR lost 37 Hinds from AA-missiles(all Stinger) in Afghanistan. Only 4(four) from single hit. Totally registered ~600 hits, sometimes 3-4 per helo, and thousands on launches. Surviving champions:
1. 8 hits from Red-eye(explodes after direct contact with target) in one helo. RTB, repaired, nobody even wounded.
2. 6 hits from Stinger(explodes near target). RTB, retired due to heavy damage. 1 men died.
@101andrewj If only you had looked into what you just said. Learn what the Afghanistan war was about, the loss of helicopters had very little to do with the withdrawal.
@RedPower012 right..... i guess it had to do with the fact that they lost so many pilots who was flying those helis and fixed wing aircraft + the fact that there government was failing
Apache and mi-24 got no similar tasks... Apache was designed on the bases of cobra I think in 60's and Mi 24 Hindwas designed in 60's too, but for a different purpose... it is a heavy attack helicopter... can take X amount of troops aboard! Mi-28 Havoc on the other hand is in the same league as Apache... but again! they are all constructed in 60's and 70's...
Rambo killed 500 men (or so). If that was in life american army would have 10 000 rembo-solders. Thats would qwite enough for destroy any army in the world
I think everyone here can agree the Mi-24 is an amazing helicopter and would give ground forces a run for its money but it still hasn't solved that major flaw in helicopters... "Hey look at me, I'm a big very slow moving target that EVERYONE can see." Tanks have the same flaw.
well, of course you have a low life expectancy... your getting shot at after all. But in my opinion i think that the hind seems to be capable of taking more damage. but if your up against a jet fighter or in a dogfight its better off to be in a plane than in a chopper.
LOL stinger isn't dangerous for HIND. In afghanistan when stinger missle hited Mi-24, 90% that helicopter can still fly. Only double hit in both engines can destroy Mi-24
watch "MI-24 HIND- Wings of the red star part 4" hind was designes before shoulder launched missles nowadays attack helicopters are small and nimble and use ground as cover.hind isn't made for modern day battlefield its absolete.still impressive machine though

Mi24 design does not incorporate these features, presumably because it was not foreseen that it would face manpads. thus, even using flares it still presents a big IR target..

@ducati0000 The Hind wasn't in Vietnam ...
l3attlel2oyal 1 year ago
@ducati0000 The vast majority of U.S. helicopters have very little hope if a missile gets on their tail... it's all about tactics; flying below radar and avoiding detection.
l3attlel2oyal 1 year ago
@l3attlel2oyal Name one aircraft that dose have a chance if if someone gets on there tail with a missile? Is there one?
Hobiecat33 1 year ago
@ducati0000
wow, so much uneducated stupidity in one post.
Aside from the fact that there were no russians (or hinds) in vietnam, the Stinger is an IR-guided missile which is what is generally refered to a "heat-seeking missile" and thats what flares are supposed to protect against by obscuring the heat signature. American Helicopters use the same.
2ane 1 year ago
@2ane actually most if not all by this point of american helicopters use laser guided missiles not heat seeking.
cosbyfish 1 year ago
@cosbyfish
not for air to air. aa is usually passive/semi-active IR or radar guided - it is too hard to paint a target that is flying around

@knigthfigth Read Sigmund Freud
captainpegs07 1 year ago
@captainpegs07 why? what does Dr Freud say regarding battle vehicle eroticism and its links to homosexuality? presumably anyone who likes vehicles that carry phallic symbols like, well, guns, rockets etc must also love the cock. what does that imply for the people who crew these vehicles? ps i agree with knightfgth (and many others), Mi24 is a sexy machine
torped0vegas 1 year ago
@torped0vegas No there are feminine autos/vehicles. Toyota Prius, for example. My prior analysis was correct. Why dig back 5 pages on youetube comments, anyways?
captainpegs07 1 year ago
@captainpegs07
i take your point on the prius
as for being 5 pages back, i was replying to a comment someone left me and happened to see your argument with knightftgh. sorry if it brought up some things for you, do you want to talk about it? pull up a beanbag, let's rap.
just out of interest, what does freud say about men who love helicopters? and if i like a prius but not a hind, does that make me hetero or gay? and the next logical question is: which do you prefer?
torped0vegas 1 year ago
@captainpegs07 OR you just stfu and mind your own business, thanks douchebag.
knigthfigth 1 year ago
@knigthfigth you're the one getting a little boner on the masculinity of the MI-24 HIND
captainpegs07 1 year ago
@knigthfigth And what does that have to do with you? If you take it that literally which you do, you're not even worth arguing with. And it's a fucking helicopter it's not masculine neither is it feminine, but it IS sexy. Stop lurking around "Debate"tube trying to find something to argue about all the time, if you're so into arguing just become a fucking politician, now stfu.

probly but the longbow apache would do better at night ops. withs its radar on the top
Mellowdev 1 year ago
really cool, but the longbow would win in a firefight
Mellowdev 1 year ago
@Mellowdev
Not if the Hind fired first, also the Longbow doesn't carry troops.
The Hind is the perfect Helicopter, the only reason we don't use it is because its Russian made.
Trustisaliability 1 year ago
I too think it would becouse its more agile.
But I just love the Hind!
mors19999 1 year ago 4
@Mellowdev perhaps what model mi24 the new G looks like the battlefield bad company 1 and frankly the hind has A SHITLOAD MORE PROTECTION THEN SMALL APACHE IT COULD RAM IT
panzer4commander 1 year ago
It sure looks powerful and cool, but isn't it, like all helicopters, extremely vulnerable to RPGs? I mean one heat seeking rocket, and this beast will probably go down.
Kynos1 2 years ago
They were vulnerable to stingers in Afghanistan, but that was in the 80s, like almost 30 years ago. Now they have countermeasures. No countermeasure is perfect, but no missile is either, fair game.
sEweron 2 years ago
No they are not vulnerable to RPGs ,but they are to SAMs . RPGs are meant to defeat ground targets and only a 'monkey' will use it to try to hit a helicopter.
ludgidia123 2 years ago
I'm not a specialist in military technology, I meant weapon systems like the Javelin and the Stinger.
Kynos1 2 years ago
taliban took down some chinooks in afghanistan .. .
saboter123 2 years ago
RPGs aren't heat-seeking. Secondly, it can withstand 50 cal fire, while an Apache can be (and was) downed by AK-47
Pseudologic 2 years ago 2
nope, hind have good protect from stingers.
Sturmovik82 2 years ago 2
They're especially vulnerable to heat-seeking missiles because the exhaust vents are positioned underneath the rotors, without countermeasures those things will go down in one hit, I believe.
Henners1991 2 years ago
@Henners1991 USSR lost 37 Hinds from AA-missiles(all Stinger) in Afghanistan. Only 4(four) from single hit. Totally registered ~600 hits, sometimes 3-4 per helo, and thousands on launches. Surviving champions:
1. 8 hits from Red-eye(explodes after direct contact with target) in one helo. RTB, repaired, nobody even wounded.
2. 6 hits from Stinger(explodes near target). RTB, retired due to heavy damage. 1 men died.
sadspammer 1 year ago
they was still losing so many helis that they pulled out of afghan and admited defeat
101andrewj 1 year ago
@101andrewj If only you had looked into what you just said. Learn what the Afghanistan war was about, the loss of helicopters had very little to do with the withdrawal.
RedPower012 1 year ago
@RedPower012 right..... i guess it had to do with the fact that they lost so many pilots who was flying those helis and fixed wing aircraft + the fact that there government was failing
101andrewj 1 year ago
The USSR sure did a god job designing this beast, i cant belive how many people try to compare this to an Apache though, thik about it:
The crew and passengers can operate in NBC conditions
it is capable of carrying bombs, rockets, people, and is very well armoured
CNCRoadKill 2 years ago
People compare it to Apache because they do similar tasks. Apache is a glass cannon though.
Pseudologic 2 years ago
Apache and mi-24 got no similar tasks... Apache was designed on the bases of cobra I think in 60's and Mi 24 Hindwas designed in 60's too, but for a different purpose... it is a heavy attack helicopter... can take X amount of troops aboard! Mi-28 Havoc on the other hand is in the same league as Apache... but again! they are all constructed in 60's and 70's...

saboter123 2 years ago
I think everyone here can agree the Mi-24 is an amazing helicopter and would give ground forces a run for its money but it still hasn't solved that major flaw in helicopters... "Hey look at me, I'm a big very slow moving target that EVERYONE can see." Tanks have the same flaw.
HaloLovingFanatic 2 years ago 5
but the hind has an amazing survivability rate. It can take an RPG to the tail rotor, and still fly. (That has happened before!)
igotbored44 2 years ago
Yes it does, but that does not save its crew or it from a surprise Jet Fighter.
HaloLovingFanatic 2 years ago
And in all honesty, I would prefer to fly this then an Apache. Either way though, you still have a low life expectancy.
HaloLovingFanatic 2 years ago
well, of course you have a low life expectancy... your getting shot at after all. But in my opinion i think that the hind seems to be capable of taking more damage. but if your up against a jet fighter or in a dogfight its better off to be in a plane than in a chopper.
igotbored44 2 years ago
The Hind is probably the scariest-looking thing in the sky - I would hate to have one come up on my while I was walking out in the open or something.

Not if you had a Stinger. =)
sniper034 2 years ago 4
True that
lemonrhyme13 2 years ago
LOL stinger isn't dangerous for HIND. In afghanistan when stinger missle hited Mi-24, 90% that helicopter can still fly. Only double hit in both engines can destroy Mi-24
