What a treat to watch. The design on display is indeed gorgeous. But the 50's-style corporate obsession with order and control also comes through. Those opening shots of people calming walking down hallways look like earth after the Pod People have taken over!
In the midst of a proposal for saving the US auto industry, it would serve Detroit well to watch this clip. It could inspire them to what could be...by reminding them of the height of what American car making was.
That is the coolest building I have ever seen. If all buildings had that sort of identity it would be interesting. However, back in mid century people were pioneers in open areas. What would be the future look in 2020? So bold and new that it would inspire and change the way we live? Can we leap again?
The man that coordinated this film hired me into what was then known as GM Photographic. Jam Handy the production company was just down the street from the old GM Building.
Yep, this building is still there in Warren, MI. The architecture is the same and it still shows its '50s Saarinen roots. Ford's design center in Dearborn was very different, not as classic.
That is the General Motors Design Center in Warren Michigan. All of the General Motors vehicles are designed there. They have changed it a bit over the years, but it is mostly still like it is in the video. The building was designed by Eero Saarinen.

Please tell us about your experience with that building. Where is it? Is it still there? Has it been remodeled?
