My snare is just some old cheap Tama I got a long time ago. It's got a Remo powerstroke 3 on the top and a basic bottom head on the bottom. My roommate actually tunes my drums for me. I'm gonna get him to do a video on it. He's incredible.

@SoggyMatch Do that because the more I listen to this the more I'm impressed with the sound coming out of that "cheap Tama", lol. And although I personally prefer a more open sound on my toms, your whole kit sounds solid. Maybe it's just the cam mike that's losing the toms. And props to a Zildjian man as well.

@SoggyMatch I used to use Powerstroke 2 or 3, and other double ply heads muted dotted heads and such. I've recently started using double ply Evans heads... just straight double ply with no muting rings (PS3) or dots or anything... and I find when tuned right (as your kit clearly is) I'm getting a much richer tone from my snare, particularly when played with other instruments.

A lot of drummers tune for solo play, & mute with tape and such. I know you don't do that, but yeh, just some thoughts.

@SoggyMatch The reason I mention the snare head is I'm a very similar drummer, with very similar idols (Grohl). It's taken me a lot of years of breaking (yes... breaking) snare drums to figure out that I was trying to achieve a tone from a head that required too much tension (Powerstroke 3). Give an evans a shot, or at least a Remo Emperor.

@talmandan Thanks, I tried using an emperor a few years ago, but that was before I actually knew how to tune. If I'm ever looking to change it up, I'll probably give the evan's 2 ply a shot. I just made a huge change from a superkick 1 on my bass drum to a straight up remo single ply. I realised how different the superkicks sound to everyone else compared to behind the kit. It took about 6 hours of playing with felt to muffle the single ply, but it was totally worth it.

@SoggyMatch Funny you mention that, as I just did the same thing pretty much! I had tried Aquarian heads, Remo powerstroke, double ply, all sorts of things... until I finally now have an evans single ply.

Check out some recordings we did of us in a practice room - search Kyboshband. This was about a week after I'd changed up my heads has I've been talking about. Currently very happy with my sound and setup.
