  • You are right. College isn't necessarily a waste of time, but you could have spent that time learning from experience rather than being taught how to become an employee like all the others. It can however help you as a backup in case things go wrong and not as planned, but in all reality LIFE is the best experience, and taking educated risks while others are too afraid to is also a big part of it. MJ Demarco covers this as well in his book.

  • Thank you for the video! It's smart to assess whether or not investing in an education is actually going to bring a QUICK return on one's investment. If one is going to spend thousands of dollars, and get into a huge debt, just to say that they have XYZ degree, that is absolutely crazy and irresponsible. You probably have heard of Dr. Randal Pinkett's Campus CEO; I like this approach. Thanks again and keep up the great work!

  • Just to add on, people need to be given a chance and for someone who's been through something can guide them along the way. Also people need to get their feet wet and test the waters that is out there before jumping into the pool.

  • I learned a lot from your videos and others on youtube! Thank you brother for taking the time to educate us with your wisdom. Peace!

  • so do you regret going to college was it worth your time? and if so, if you could do it all over what would you do instead?

  • @KINGSTONUSB2 College is to prove to other idiots that you know what you are talking about. Just to get a foot in the door, but it really doesn't teach you what to do when you get there. Working, hands on training gets you that

  • Brother Abdul: Meg & Dia Frampton's father was a DJ in Korea and didn't invent the super soaker water gun. The inventor of the super soaker water gun is Lonnie Johnson an (african american)aerospace engineer from Los Angelos,Ca.

  • @prettysteeve47 actually you are correct, I found that out later. He invented something else. Meg was telling me of the story and had it off by a long shot lol. But he is a inventor.

  • SOHK Class of 2011 lol

  • with ought collage there would be no collage there would be no colloge football

  • your school must have sucked.you make me laugh though. in a good way.

  • your school must have sucked.

  • Firstly, what is education? Education is synonymous to information. There are 2 types of education, formal and informal. School is formal and you dont learn to be rich there. Informal which you either get from the elders at home or you go learn yourself (abut owning businesses), which is not taught in schools. School is good tho, it gives you a good headstart, but its not complete.

  • ♥♥♥ im a filipino sir, i sel livestock, i love buy and sell too, can u pls tell me other feasible ways of items to buy and sell. thank you sir i love ur videos keep it up mch love ♥♥♥

  • from what I see unless you going to do medicine/health, a hard science and maybe education, college can be a debt trap.

  • another problem is we depend too on our jobs

  • to really be successful in life is take a RISK

  • @TheNeptunePisces83 wrong. To be really succesfull is to make REALLY SMART decisions.

  • good post

  • Hate the blue polo... Love the Advice.

  • Great video! You gave plenty of excellent arguments to support your opinion. And I agree. This is something that I've been thinking about for a long time. But you named quite a few more arguments/analogies that I haven't thought of before.

  • @WineBeerLover of course legally Do you think this can be done, lol?

  • @AtheosRecords Really lol.

  • Thanks for sharing!! I totally agree with you and what you say.

School allowed me to discover my quality traits without the burden of making money since my mom and dad was paying for me to figure out what I wanted to do with my life. School provided me a diverse mixture of classes(choices) to find my strengths and discover my weaknesses. School offer NETWORKS! Does it make you successful? NO! but can help you develop yourself as a person? MAYBE..It helped me in an unexpected way..

  • i love asians!

  • When i was at school it was just boring and shit every one had fun but of course every one just messed around and was easy to bunk off so when i got my gcse's i looked at them and was like oh dear i just fucking failed but i got in to a carpentry course that i didnt like and hated it that was a mistake for me and i learned from it so i was unemployed for 3 months bumming around my house and then i decided to go back to college im now doing my english maths and IT and its great i love every min..

  • great vid.........subbed

  • You are right. If you have your own idea for business you dont need to qualify yourself. But if you are going to be an employee they won't look at you unless you have the degree and relevant experience

  • You make many valid points, but I'm happy my doctors have degrees, and I'm pursuing double major BA with CS .

  • @spartant22 they type of education I think is important is specialized eduction. Most millionaires own businesses and most don't have over a bachelor's and a lot are highschool dropout. I am just saying that education has worked for some but it's not a deal breaker.

  • @spartant22 You tend to believe that BECAUSE you are pursuing a degree. My brother is a physician and let me tell you what he told me about the "education" process. The education is not designed to teach you very much, it is designed to keep as many people away from becoming doctors as possible to lower the competition and ensure CURRENT doctors continued income. Everything he knows he learned in residence - i.e. WORKING IN A HOSPITAL under a mentor. Apprenticeships are all they need not degrees

  • You make some good points in this video, however, college is still very important...especially in our (i.e., black) community. I am currently working on my masters. College, in my opinion, teaches you to be refined. It teaches you to operate in the "majority" community. We have not grown up with the background and/or parents that navigate in this arena. Also, networking and opportunities arise with a degree. Though you may not "learn" much, it may be the reason you get a shot to show your talent

  • Without a college degree, you face an uphill battle finding someone who will invest in your business. You need a college degree, to get a good job, so that you can save and stock capital, while you work on your business.

and while your link shows the small, minuscule handful of people who don't have degrees who were extremely lucky, or inherited it, or were blessed by family connections...the VAST majority of people who are "just" rich/wealthy...do have degrees...and advanced degrees at that.

  • See..the problem is that people goes to college to learn a trade instead of furthering their education while learning a trade. Personally, college is important because anyone can learn so much if they just expand their knowledge. I made mistakes when I went to school when I wasn't ready, but I'm proud that I finish with a certificate and work in a office when I'm used to doing labor work.

  • Let me add to my last comment.

    Education IS important.

Just NOT the so called "education" currently promoted by the system today.

Education should serve the student and empower that student to live a fuller more complete life. Learn and never stop learning. But don't waste time learning the crap that is passed off as education. I think that you are touching on this with this video. A true education should not make slaves who are dependent on a "masta" to give them a job.

  • College is Basically bullshit!

It is in the box thinking and "vested interest' to get people to keep

    the current system intact. FACT!!!

    Peace

  • also, your negativity is really something else, borderline egocentric. (*ahhh* now i feel better :)

  • @19fas88 Thank you 19fas88 your opinion is greatly appreciated. I can tell that education has really worked for you and I am glad for you. I have been called egocentric before, I mean no harm by it, I just want to be confident enought to complete tasks. Thank you for pointing that out, I will work on it.

  • From a money perspective people go to college to achieve a good standard of living. Your basically lower-middle upper class with a bachelors+ job. You will probably get a job that will put you comfortably above what it takes to be financially secure in society. You can achieve that without college, but obviously there is a discrepancy.

To get rich you gotta do what:

Implement an Idea/be a business owner

Have a niche job: CEO, Sports Player and etc

    Get lucky/Inherit.

  • I think you're losing site of what University is. According to you I feel that you believe university is the keys to how to do job A, B, C etc. (not to mention that you need a degree for certain jobs). You also apply success to being nothing more than 'how much money do you make?'. In the later part of your video I think you hit the nail on the head. Motivation & interest - NOT KNOWLEDGE (figuratively). That is what university is suppose to do, nothing more, nothing less. My 2 cents.

  • I have been studying non-stop in a school system for almost 30 years now.Education is important if one desires to specialize to extremely narrow field of a trade. One way to get better is to work with a specialist that already has 40 years of experience. However, if one is driven to learn even more then remaining option is to get into a TOP500 university.Goal to be a specialist is a calling and not necessarily way to become rich.

  • You're right!

  • I agree..everyone is ignorant about a great many things. People who call people dumb, stupid or similar are really ignorant about the fact they are ignorant.

I'm ignorant about things like everyone and I'm aware of this fact at least.

"He who knows that he does not know, knows more than he who does not know that he does not know." Socrates.

    One of my fav quotes.

The education system to me is just another big corporate business. Another system of control. Self education is win!

  • @cloaknpoke This is why Socrates was a brilliant man.

  • thanks for discussing this :)

  • Great video.

  • I have to agree when it comes to business in most situations. If a person is looking to start their own business or become an entrepreneur I don't really see education being beneficial to them in most situations. With the amount of money it costs to goto school I would have to say that if you want to start your own business that can really slow you down. There are some businesses that you should goto school for. Maybe not a degree but training for a trade like a mechanic lets say.

  • There isn't ANYTHING in college that you can't teach to yourself with a little motivation and dedication. We live in the technological age. There is no excuse for a lack of education. College is just a long hazing process that weeds out undesirables aka those with any real creativity or free thinking ability. Corporate America hates these types of ppl because they will not be drones and will usually outwit management. Management shoves these types of ppl out of the door.

  • The whole grade system in college and the butt-kissing for grades just sets up future workers for working in some lame company. If you have any creative bone in your body, I recommend that you stay away from college. I'm on of those ppl that should have done just that. College dampers creativity and fosters conformist attitudes. Professors basically repeat things that you could otherwise read on your own. College is just a ridiculous waste of time. I also recommend learning a trade instead.

  • i think school is a proving ground for listening to authority and showing up on time 8-3 get you ready for you know what.

  • Good points and thank you for sharing. Like someone said, educational success does not guarantee financial success.

  • @chiyerano I do think getting a degree is good to have in that it helps with your credentials.

  • The very rich I know never made it into high school.

  • @32937isready This is what I am finding out 32937.

  • A degree does help, but that's all it does. It is like a reference.

But if you're the Bill Gates type of person, what matters most is initial capital/money.

  • dude u sell sunclases and make less than 250k a year get over yourself please for gods sake

  • Comment removed

  • @clintonskakun College was never intended to make people rich/wealthy; it was created to PRESERVE the wealth and distinction of the elite-- those who already had money. There was an increase in the demand of more schooling by the masses which is why our educational system appears to be open for all. However, the same concept of preservation of power and status remains; hence different tiers and caliber of institutions. Most universities don't give you real work skills in the typical sense. Yet

  • (pt2) they indoctrinate/socialize you in a particular manner which alerts employers and society about "what kind of social training" you have received and if you would be a good fit in their organization/understand and adhere to their organizational culture. Similarly, college doesn't teach you skills but it gives you with social capital (a network and ppl with resources). The social capital is beyond important in the way our society works at present. You don't need to know much bc you'll get

  • (pt3) trained on the job. So although college doesn't "teach you how to make millions," depending on where you go, they put you in a position where making that million is a lot easier.

  • Colleges wont teach you how to make hundreds of millions, because they have no clue. They groom you to become a CEO or a exec, both of which are basically fancy employee titles with a little larger than average compensation.

I never went to college and I don't think I ever will.

  • Your degree has helped you

  • With my counter point , using Dr. Randal Pinkett website as a source for what I wrote down , done. I would to hear from people who have checked the website and tell me what do you think ? Part Three

  • There's too much of a juxtaposition between money and education in your argument. Even a degree is not an accurate indicator of how educated one is. I agree with you on the limitations of the narrow mentality of "get an education, get a job, house, etc." aka The American Dream but the word education is used way too loosely. Getting a degree does not mean you are educated. Getting a degree from Harvard does not mean you are educated.

  • >>>..... continuing....>> I have , through internet researching and talking to local college students here in D.C. that many colleges are starting to wake up in the sense that they are realizing entrepeunership / small business is a vital link in the American global enconomy. SOOOO reality courses / seminars / entrepeuner teachesr are now being offered by many colleges; One such person would be Dr. Randal Pinkett. Check his website especially the online videos. Part Two

  • Well one thing that comes to mind when geetting a college education is learning how to get along and work with people from all the US and the world; this all depends on where one attends college. I see from the current first page of comments that its mostly or somewhat negative; Here my counter point and I can be wrong sooo I don,t mind if someone sends me reply comment to what I am going to say Part One

  • This is a very hot topic right now. It's really gonna hurt the colleges. HAHA My mom is from the old school work hard, education, get a degree. She is a doctor by the way. I hate saying this but she is broke. On the other hand I encouraged and am paying for my fiance to get her masters in education. Mostly I thought it would look good on her wall when we open the daycare center next year.

  • I've been questioning the value of a college education for awhile.

I've got to comment on this more when I clear my dead lines.

  • There is a lot of misunderstanding about the value of education, much it promoted by the educators. People think that an MBA, for instance, means you will be qualified to run a business. In reality an MBA is a specialist piece of education that qualifies you to be a high level manager in a huge organisation. A lot of people assume it's a license to print money, but it's just a tool to getting to a position. Lots of other degrees are not even that, they're just study camps.

  • Here in Spain the unemployment offices are full of Masters degrees.

I have picked grapes (helping out the family business) with young people with masters degrees and picking grapes is all they can get right now.

Well said anout being taught business by someone who has never ran a business, like being taught to fly by someone who has never flown a real aircraft, just dosen't make sense to me.

  • college and education are not the same thing

go to college for a degree

go to a library for an education

  • @TheFlex21

Well we all know where you got your education. Hint: Propoganda youtubers.

  • @TheFlex21 wow good point !

  • Isn't a MBA preparation for corporate big business? Is that is business in the sense that you're in business? Going to business school in order to go into your own business is probably not a good idea. But if you use the opportunity to educate yourself about what you're attracted to, you can use the time profitably.

The problem is -- that average student doesn't have something (s)he's attracted to.

  • Education seems to have link with who is permitted to do something.

I found out here in Finland, that you have to have a farming degree to get some money from government, if you have farming as your business. Forced schooling to stay in the competition?

Sometimes study can turn out to be a misinvestment. Times do change so fast. It might be a good idea to talk to people and find out, what is in or what is needed before that investment.

  • @liefdechance check out the link in my description box, check out all the billionaires, pay attention to their education barely no one has over a bachelors'

  • You can check out the list I posted to check out the real millionaires.

  • my grandparents are the perfect example, they were POW's in WW2 and were forced to abandon school after the first year, after the war ended, they had nothing. no education, all they had was a little piece of land. some odd 60 years later, they are multi millionaires that have a pretty famous tropical fruits farm here in okinawa, and own a 28 room apartment complex, point is, its all about hard work and dedication

  • lol "dumbbutt"

  • It's amazing how important an education/knowledge is on literature. Never would have believed it until I studied foreign language and literature.

Now, you don't have to get a degree, but it's valuable all over the place.

If you get some good literature on a shop-owner, or businessman, -- and I mean real literature -- you can learn what the author researched or experienced.

Good real literature tells you about people, etc. I didn't believe it either. Ha. Ha. Real lit. tells you about life.

  • I can't argue with you on this except to agree with what you said about doing what you love. For me when I'm working with machinery, especially when I'm doing a complex troubleshoot on an engine fuel system where a failure ended up breaking other components and I had to determine what exactly happened before I had a prayer of fixing it. I'm like some kind of detective sometimes and when I'm doing this I'm almost always happy. I'll never make the kind of money you make though.

  • 2. Still when it all boils down, I'm happy. I've also make maximum use of my working class income by knocking out all my debt (just paid off my home last week), leaving me about 2600 extra each month.

For me, that 2 year community collage degree in diesel and heavy equipment repair was just what I needed. I've been happy ever since.

  • @vention4wh Good for you man, you saw your plan all the way through I am so proud.

  • @mohammedabshaun

Thanks! That means a lot, especially coming from someone of your accomplishments.

  • A College education will make a man a living , however Self education will make a man a fortune.

  • @prettysteeve47 Amen!

  • @prettysteeve47 Man, thanks for that one! I've done so much to improve myself, and went into business after high school, never looking back. Sometimes people seem to have something against a person with no degree, and that's such a shame. Now that government budgets are running low, look for degrees to mean less and less as we fall into head-to-head competition with other countries who will no longer accept our debt for real goods. Practical knowledge will be the edge once again. Peace.

  • if you want to become a better employee, then go to college.

  • Education is important, but there's different kinds of education. You can't refer "education" as what conventional schools offer. That's just a small scope of what education is.

And to add on to that, I have never used business calculus, chemistry, physics, or ceramics after finishing school.

  • College can give you exposure to critical thinking which examines assumptions, looks at and recognize hidden values, evaluates evidence, and assesses conclusion. Some wouldn't have that mindset if it wasn't for college. College isn't for everyone of course

  • @skeetmoses YOU DO MAKE AN EXCELLENT POINT

  • i agree, do what you love, education or no ;D

  • Depends one what you want to do. Some people doesn't need higher education to archive their particular objectives. Others who want to be professors, doctors, acturary, engineers, and etc. will need it for sure. I-banking could probably rack in 3500 in a day. Moreover if you are going to quant finance in wall street and have the proper mathematical background, you can definitely make an excellent living in wall street.

I am personally going for my Phd, to get into academia.

  • from Rasoolullah Salallahu 'Alayhee Wa Sallam

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: "The seeking of knowledge is obligatory for every Muslim." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 74

The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “One who treads a path in search of knowledge has his path to Paradise made easy by God…” - Riyadh us-Saleheen, 245

The Prophet also said: "Acquire knowledge and impart it to the people." - Al-Tirmidhi, Hadith 107

  • @Codylangaugesblog I didn't say education wasn't bad just a college education may not lead to success.

  • @mohammedabshaun no no, I agree, Education can be achieved outside of college!

  • @Codylangaugesblog I am sorry, I misunderstood you.

  • @mohammedabshaun Its ok, I should have been more clear.

  • @Codylangaugesblog what is this subjective nonsense i am reading?

  • I'm torn on this one - do I think education is important? Yes I do - but by the same token, I don't think it's necessary to be successful (in business or in life). I do think it opens up more opportunity. I do have my BS in Bus. Admin (Maj. Mgt Info Systesm, Minor Computer Science).. But - 25 years later, I want to persue another career track - owning my own busines - starting a membership website with a Certified Hypnotherapist. So - my college will be used to some extent.

  • I WOULD LOVE FOR MY SON TO GO TO COLLEGE BUT WILL I FORCE HIM TO NO.... WE ALL GROW UP AND PEOPLE TELL US OH GO TO COLLEGE YOU'LL MAKE LOTS OF MONEY.... THEN YOU DO THAT AND THEN U REALIZE ITS ALL PRETTY MUCH A CROCK OF BS. LEAVES YOU IN ALOT OF DEBT ETC.... SO I THINK THAT WE AS ADULTS REARING CHILDREN SHOULD LET OUR CHILDREN MAKE THE OWN CHOICE WHEN ITS TIME.... JUST MY RANT FOR THE DAY....LOL... GOOD NIGHT

  • @shaunaboo961 That's right! Yep.
