hey bob, i cant tell u in words how thankful i am for ppl like u that do these lessons......i just have to practice alot more n get faster......i remember u wantin us to comment ....if there was a lessons ida liked to see, in ur leisure of course, is how to pick which position of which scale to use for certain chord progs....again thank u so much for ur time
I gonna practice everyday,,this is awesome,,I always wanted to know how to connect the modes together,,I will be shredding in no time. Thanks Bob!! Tommy
great lesson.got it kinda lol i wsh i could do this in any key on the spot though.. guess ill keep practicing ..but really thanks..plan on watching more once i get this..i wanna shred daddy!!! lol
I dont get it! Yes, I know he starts and finishes in Ionian, but when he progresses through the scale up the neck, would he actually be using parts of Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, etc? Wouldn't he be using parts of all 7 modes?
I'm still working on it myself but I'm pretty sure that yes he is. All modes are is using the same notes but starting from a different position. For example if you're in the key of C and you want to play G mixolydian (because G is the 5th, and the 5th mode). you would play the G major scale starting from the G but flatting the 7th of that scale, thus keeping all of the notes of the C major scale. My friend told me that it is basically just a way to familiarize yourself with the fretboard.
@nmon1 did u get an answer on that cuz music snobs alway try to make me feel like shyt for not knowing what mode to tell my players to play in but when he/she figures it out they play allover the guitar or whatever intrument anyhow and still called it respective soloing in whateevr particular mode, yet its being played over the whole guitar i dont get it
Bob, thanks for putting all these up, I've been practicing them some, and feel stronger about improvising allready (atleast out of G ha). Ever consider doing the melodic and harmonic modes?
hey bob........thnx for that.......i knew those patterns and used them but never seen it put like that before........it opens my ideas to some cool new scalar runs and good practise ideas. Keep rockin!
Awesome guitarist, love his style. How anyone can pick that fast is beyond me. My strings won't stay still, they just bounce about. What is the trick, does he use any particular picks? How about the gauge of the strings, does this make a difference when playing fast? How do you get that fast, this guy is amazing. As most folk say on this site, by far the best teacher I've seen on here.
best advice that I was given is to relax, relax, and RELAX. haha. A lot of people try to pick faster by being aggressive, but it uses more energy and tension in your muscles. Try relaxing and gently alternate pick each string. With that being said, dynamics are a huge part too. Some notes you may want to pick harder to sound them out more distinctively. Use your ears as your guide, they wont let you down!!! Cheers
@illucid1982 Some people think relaxed playing means flimsy picking. Its as far from the truth as possible. They also think they already playing relaxed cause they are used to the tension so much that it feels...natural to them. The truth is that only the weight of your fingers is sufficient to produce good tone...no trying to..death grip the fretboard.Relaxed picking mainly from the wrist without achoring your pinky is generally a winning formula for anyone who wants to play fast and relaxed.
Bob, I just found this and wanted to tell ya MODES are what I need...Been playing for years and I'm pretty fast but never had any training...Thanks for this...been looking for a soothing way to transition fast licks and I can mix this up with accents and picking have GREAT runs...thanks Bob ...YOU RAWK !
this guy is truly one hell of a person to actually break this down for everybody...THANK YOU BOB!!!!!!!the thing that fuckin kills me is how he starts his video after jamming on his scales.....he goes HEYYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!i love it keep rocking man!!!!!!!!
i wrote down the notes of each scale, dorian and such.now ,i have to train my ear to know the difference as well as pick up speed on them.i know if you put it all together,it is a key ingredient in jazz.
thanks after 25 years of playing things are starting to make sense, thanks for great advice, Iwas wondering if you could shed light on connecting all the diatonic modes?

this is just stupid exercises,,,can you do a more musical aproach to modes,,,plus the equipment you have seems to mean shit,,,since the tone you have is more of those cheap CRATE amps,,,anyway,,,good luck
Bob, I enjoy your work and the method you use in sharing and starting your video...But, I got to ask doesnt it feel better without the hair, I'm doing the ball cap also...I'm getting alot of good scale work from your efforts ....thanks......hog

Or even point us to website with it already tabed up if possible. Either way awesome job man once again thanks so much!
great guitarist, and this is the best way I found to practice scales.....
(but try to play with a band with that sound and you'd disappear faster than a fighter jet!!! turn up those mids!!!) loool
