5.56 is not at powerful as the 7.62 but its leaves bigger holes because it tumbles its still a good round and people would be dumb to deny that this round fired from a 20 inch barrel isnt a man stooper
@shishiromura The airforce was the first service to use it, and more than just politics played a role, but they were a big part. Mainly military leaders who didn't know what they were doing were the only politics.
Forgot to mention the M855A1 which will replace the M855 with the Army and the MK318 MOD 0 SOST round which is what the Marines are trying out to replace the M855 with as they dont want to have to wait much longer for the Army to finish making the M855A1 a lead free round. Also we are leaving out the various tracers etc.
Also 5.56mm Tap T2 75gr rounds have been used by the military of the United States in Special Forces units its superior to the 77gr MK262 in that it has less drop at longer distances and has a shorter neck in the wound channel.
No need for the Mk262 to be a FMJ round. It already does the same thing a FMJ round does but better, it is not a hollow point round like in the sense of its function like a hollow point in a handgun round and mushrooms but its an open tippped round made to fragment like a FMJ 5.56mm round and the open tip adds to its accuracy. It is used for long range shooting over a 75gr round due to the longer neck of the round in the wound channel, other than that the wounds are the same.

The M16 was only designed to be a naval base security weapon, not the standard issue weapon for all troops. thats when politics stepped in

the best 5.56 bullet would be MK262 but with a full metal jaket.
that way would penetrate like a 7.62 with greater wound and probably range
