  • The rest of the band may not have always liked it, but The Sweet's sound was built around Brian's unique voice. Good songs, but they weren't as good without him and his aggressive delivery. RIP bro.

  • didnt mick leave the stage a wee bit early lol x

  • i was 14 when sweet released this classic which is my fav song by them. i was sweet mad and even when brian was booted out they were still ace. saw them in nottingham in 1979 as a 3 piece. fav album is off the record

  • They should have held on for a bit longer and then go into really classic group status !

  • Well I wish I had been 15 in 1974......and not 5!!!! But thanks to my two elder sisters I didn't miss out!!!! LOVE Sweet.....and this is my fave!!!!

  • ss for shouting grandaughter had comp last

  • HEY I WAS A TEEN IN THE 70S AND MY CHILDREN AND GRANDCHILDREN WERE BROUGHT UP WITH THIS MUSIC . CAUSE OF ME LOL EVEN THOUGH IM NOT SURE IF THEY LIKE IT WHO CARES ITS MY MUSIC . RIP BRIAN AND MICK WE WONT FORGET U

  • Wow!!!! I can remember this when it was shown...the intro from Johnnie Walker, the TOTP crowd chanting"We want Sweet" and the twiddling drum sticks of Mick Tucker (RIP). Thanks for sharing this rare clip with an army of nostalgists like myself.

  • thank you ... thank you ... first single i ever bought aged 7.. drove my parents nuts.. i played it till it melted .. fantastic song

  • Brian and Steve, the two sexiest men ever.

  • I was only 8 when this was released - used to watch top of the pops religiously and loved the glam era from '72 - '74. My eldest brother, who was 6 yrs older than me had their album Sweet Fanny Adams, and the tracks on that are to this day still very memorable. Great band, but if Slade did sell more records and i don't know if they did, it would ONLY be due to their Merry Xmas Everybody single that has been re released time and time again. BTW, I loved Slade too and Wizzard!!! :)

  • If they were starting out now they would be a sensation. Vastly underated because they were seen as a teeny bopper group. They were of course much better than that. It's interesting that the B sides of their singles leaned very much toward HM.

  • wow, how rare is this? agree with one of the other posters, the BBC would be VERY interested in this, lost and thought wiped. Great clip, brilliant band.

  • the best

  • This is REAL MUSIC..this and BLOCKBUSTER

  • i was 9 when this came out... i've been rampaging ever since...i'm gonna be doing Old Age Rampage soon now.. love the song..

  • Takes me back.. I'd be 12/13...certainly was a 'teenage rampage' not long after - as a punk rocker going to see the Clash/Pistols...happy days! I'd forgotten how good the Sweet were - great rock values..I'd always grouped them with the likes of Mud - but they were better than that. - '74...year Abba won Eurovision? I can see where Agnetha Faltskog (blonde Abba) got the idea for her costume - although she looked better in it.... not as good as me in MY platforms and flares

    though..ha!

  • Best live band for me ever

  • great stuff

But who is that TOTP presenter???

  • @ifyouwantblood100 The TOTP presenter is none other than Johnnie Walker!

  • thanks so much for uploading this, love The Sweet even tho i was too young the first time round, didnt develop a good taste in music 'til i was 14/15

  • k so sweet is pretty sweet !

  • Fantastic! Been wishing for a clip of this for many years! Thanks

  • man when he broke the mic stand on his knee on totp i thought is was the coolest thing a 9 yr old had ever seen

  • @thewhack64. Haha. I was 10 & thought it was right on too. I had a poster of BC on my wall with a mic stand that looked like it was sellotaped round the middle.

  • MICK the best drummer ever .

  • I loved this song when it was released but was so annoyed because I was not 13 until October of that year so was not yet a teenager.

  • @hopelesslyderanged What he said!

  • steve, andy & mick seem very pissed off in this, andy once moaned that he thought this song was a backward step, and was a hit because of its novelty intro.

  • @moonsault2506123 Bet they liked the money it made though! I've always thought it was great.

  • @moonsault2506123 The story goes that the band were all wearing new custom made satin jackets and Steve had the words 'Fuck You' embroidered on the back of his! In rehearsal he turned so it was right in shot and the BBC/TOTP directors made him cover it up with tape (which you can just about see in the opening shots). The band threw a hissy fit, but appeared nonetheless- albeit looking really pissed off...

  • Not underrated, but unknown.

People who reads this comment know of them, and none of you are underrating them, am I right?

  • @ScandinaviaUnite I know them since the early seventies. Not that I was old enough to known about them but my dad always played Blockbuster. This is great to hear again even though I have a couple of cd's of them

  • @GalilGade

Yeah, Blockbuster is brilliant! I got the double record album "Solid Gold", when I was about 8... Lousy sound on that record, but it made me realize that I really liked them! ;-)

  • Absolutely fantastic!!

  • Steve Priest could look directly at you and make you weak.

  • Not sure where some of you folks are in the world but The Sweet were massive here in the UK especially in the early 70's Thank god for places like YouTube, the memories linger and come back to life and the music stands as strong today as it ever did.

  • I really don't understand how they didn't get more popularity. They should be as recognizable as KISS now-a-days. Totally underrated...

  • recognize your age its a teenage rampage turn another page on the teenage rampage now.RIP brian RIP mick

  • What a front man this guy was..totally underated... RIP Brian

  • Fantastic memories! Have you got any other clips from that era that were supposedly wiped - as in much of the shows from 1972 to 1974? The one I would dearly love to see is "Chicory Tip" performing "Good Grief Christina" - the first record I ever bought.

  • RIP Brian. The music lives on!! \o/

  • @rhinoreps RIP Brian & MIck

  • was that johnnie walker presenting totp?

  • Live fast, die young.

Thanks for the songs of Sweet.

    RIP - Brian Conolly.

  • great band.

  • Great Time!

  • craigg1960,if your post was meant for me you are a soul brother.same age same taste in fab music

  • Great post - thanks

  • I was 13 when this was released.totally got the message at the time.thanks for the memories.

  • oh yesss !! what a great song this was and still sounds great to this day .. loved this group ... Great mems from the 70s' thanx for posting ...Lyndloo...

  • boah they sings so good!!i love this song the voice are so genial!!!!!the best of the world

  • Thanks for the upload evanswho-i was 15 again while watching it !

  • Awesome clip of an awesome song! :)

  • I adore this song and own a 45 LP of it :)

  • rocky horrors frankenfurter at 0:45 lol

  • Chapman/Chinn were amazing songwriters.

  • yeah...but I thought that by the time this song came about, the boys were doing their own writing.

  • thank you so much for a real good quality song! awesome!

  • There are a lot of crap videos of this song on YT,at last i've found a good one. Thanks for the upload.

  • Andy Scott's yellow guitar is by Chris Eccleshall.

  • Brian at his sexiest.

  • Agreeed :D

  • wow...i never realized how much i like Sweet. Seriously. Betcha Marilyn Manson knows this song by heart.

  • That´s one of the worst thing about clips like this one from the 70´s, that everything was playback.

  • @bjursten but the mike was always open although the sound was playback

  • what a great band, thanx for posting this clip

  • their best single ever

  • the SWEET were better songwriters than slade ever could be and live sweet also were much better i know cause ive seen both bands, fuck dave hill of slade could barely keep his guitar tuned, a novice compared to andy scott of sweet

  • The sweet were goods, but Slade were better. The creative talents of Jim Lea&Noddy Holder shows to the world of music that only Lennon&McCarney or Jagger&Richars would compair

  • I prefer SWEET as did many here in the US..

  • Do you play guitar or any other musical instrument?

  • Love Brians expression from 2.32 - so sexy!!!

  • Its a mystery to me the fact that SLADE sold lots more albums than the Sweet? the Sweet was far better performers, musicians and rockers than Slade?.

  • Jeez, Steve and Andy looked pissed.

How bout Mick jumping out of his drumset -- not fully over yet.

Brian ALWAYS looks happy and sexy - no matter what!!!!

    They are an awesome crew!!

    xoxoxoxox forever!!!

  • Yeah, it does seem like something was going on there, doesn't it..? Maybe an argument backstage or something..

  • Andy walked off too! Was this the time they had "inappropriate" jackets on? BBC wouldn't show their backs or something because of them. Sweetfan78 knows what was on each. see below.

  • sweet sold far more records than slade, in europe and america check the statistics before u leave daft comments like this.

  • HEY YOU GOT THE WRONG PERSON, derekkilte -- I never said what you accused me of.....get YOUR facts straight - I think you need to direct your comment to "goraslade" I think that person said what you accused me of saying!!!!!!!

  • Attention all drummers ! Watch Mick's drumming (and stick twirls !). Brilliant !

  • amazing

  • How Do You Create A Playlist?

  • had to buy two 45s wore the first one out sweet at their very best pure talent TOO SWEET

  • nie mam pojęcia..... ;( może po prosu sie nie znają.....

  • how many videos did they do of this song?

  • TWO performances of this song exist from TOTP '74. They survive thro' home video taping. There is also a clip from Crackerjack '74 which comes from the same source as the TOTP clips. The band did "Music Laden" on German TV which can be found in excellant quality & there's the promo which shows the band in the studio. Five in all to my knowledge.

Stevie did not have "F*** Off" on the back of his jacket, he had "F*** You". Mick had the nazi symbol & Andy had "Bollox!" stuck on his back.

  • super, dlaczego tak mało ludzi to ogląda????

  • hahahaah this is great! Andy's already off the stage before the songs over, and Mick storms off straight away..lol

  • Super Clip !!! Danke !!!

    Sweet Forever !

  • Incredibly cool, thanks for posting!

This is the clip where Steve was wearing the jacket with a particular phrase on the back.. one that didn't endear him to the BBC. It was censored, and he had to cover it with tape, which may explain why the band looks irate.

  • Wow, I've heard of this clip- Steve's got 'FUCK OFF' embroidered on the back of his jacket! Apparently when the TOTP producer spotted it and told him to cover it up he got really pissed off and almost walked! Crazy! This is amazing. Steve's playing a white Fender Jazz bass with black pick guard which was never standard Fender issue, and Andy's got that weird Les Paul junior. Man I love Sweet!!!

  • "take heed, be warned and lock up your daughters" lol....oh, my day was made at "imagine the formation"

  • Very british crowd..not knowing whats going on...us brits rule! HAHA

  • on the first close up of Steve he looks bored

  • Great stuff, nice to see a JW intro, anyone got any clips of Kenny Everett when he hosted TOTPs in 1973?

  • Great clip!

    Thanks!

Does anyone have a clip from the song "Own up, take a look at yourself"?

It was on the b-side of the single with Teenage rampage.

I think it is a great song but a little bit unknown, i have not heard so much about it.

  • Steve looks his best in this clip! And he's not wearing any make-up either! And Mick... god, I love them! Thanks a lot for this!

  • Can't remember Johnnie Walker being a TOTP presenter!Wonderful stuff-more please!

  • I have this and their other TOTP appearance for this song, and they look far happier in that one!

Why do the band look so fed up in this one?

Mick Tucker storms off before the end!

  • You bet it's rare. I haven't seen this clip that clear in such along time. Your the best and this made my day!!!! Thanks

  • Many thanks, another great clip, have you many more Totp clips? I'm sure the BBC will be interested, I hope so.

  • Hi how did you get this clip then?

    its great.

if you send it to the BBC they will digitally remaster it.Are you going to send it them?

  • Haven't thought about it, will they want it as I didn't think they were interested in Top of the pops? I may e-mail them to see.

    Brian

  • @Daleksrule More likely they will lose it! As they do with everything.

  • Yes, this clip was wiped along with many others in the BBC archives, such a shame, still glad you enjoyed it.

    Brian

  • @evanswho you're just simply a GOD Brian for saving rarities like this. Have you many more "wiped" totp recordings in your possession, esp @ 1972 - 5 era of top of the pops? Thanx for this fabulous upload and preserve the original and any other wiped rarities you may possess in cotton wool! :)

  • AWESOME! thanx for sharing this! never seen this version before...is this from one of the many TOTPs that the BEEB wiped? This was one of the first singles that I bought.... I'd have been 8 years old...played it over and over again on my parents Dansette record player till I pissed them off LOL!
