Unlike the 90's, the newer technologies are allowing more people to communicate in digital. Basically, its not just nerds on computers anymore. It's a majority of the world.

I make html and other programming tutorials and I have to say that although html certainly has its limitations, it is still useful in certain situations and (whether good or not) the internet as it exists today is more equipped to deal with it. But xml is ideal for many things, and one should eventually learn it.
