The US should build much more roundabout. There are 30.000 roundabout in France. They are building around 1000 every year. In the US there are only a few hundred.
Good thing I moved here *after* it was built. I remember going to Sand Mountain one day before it was built. That light was a frigg'n nightmare. Granted, I hate roundabouts, but being that I've got to drive through the thing *every* day to go to work, I'm glad it's there!
And why is that?? You wait a lot more with traffic lights and don't get me started on all the other advantages that roundabouts offer over traffic lights and stop signs. Silly little shorty.
Another success story for roundabouts... I'm trying to get the city of Mission Viejo, CA to build them. I'm finding that people assume people don't want them or assume people can't drive them but I'm finding out that more and more and more are on my side and really want the city to build them. Let's hope!
have you been back to ladera ranch and driven their roundabouts? I HATE THEM !! every 10 seconds you are coming to another one. I think there must be 15 on that one single road...
(Continued). The rule on British - and most French roundabouts - is simple: you give way to anyone who's actually on the roundabout. We even have 'mini roundabouts. These are basically just a crossroads with a big white disc painted on the road and you're supposed to treat it like a real roundabout! Strangley, it works. There's roundabouts (British and French) on a few of my vids.
So there actually is at least one roundabout in the US! Hurrah! I've always wondered why junctions are always controlled by lights over there. I believe traffic roundabouts are a British invention. You'll find them all over Britain, sometimes as many half a dozen in a couple of miles. Sometimes they're assisted by traffic lights in peak periods. I've found them all over France, and I think they're all over Europe, if not other continents. (Continued in next comment box.)
Actually roundabouts are a French invention. The first one was constructed in 1901 at the base of Arc de Triomphe. The next one to be built was in New York city in 1904, Columbus Circle. We have two where I live. The official story from our city planner is that there aren't more because people don't know how to use them. I joke you not.
