Jadis is the main antagonist of The Magician's Nephew and of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe in C.S. Lewis's series, The Chronicles of Narnia. She is commonly referred to as the White Witch in The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, the first book in the series, as she is the Witch who froze Narnia in the Hundred Years Winter.
Some recent editions of the books include brief notes, added by later editors, that describe the cast of characters. As Lewis scholar Peter Schakel points out, the description there of Jadis and the Queen of Underland (the main antagonist of The Silver Chair) "states incorrectly that the Queen of Underland is an embodiment of Jadis". Beyond characterising the two as "Northern Witches", Lewis's text does not connect them.
In The Magician's Nephew, Jadis is revealed to be a native of Charn, a different world entirely from Narnia. She is descended from a long line of kings and queens. This line began well, with honorable, decent-hearted people, but grew evil and malevolent over many generations.
Charn's final queen, Jadis, a powerful sorceress, fought against her sister in a bloody war which almost ended in her own defeat. Rather than submit to her sister, Jadis spoke the Deplorable Word and left Charn devoid of life. She placed herself in an enchanted sleep, to be awakened when a bell was rung in the same chamber.
She passes through the Wood between the Worlds, an endless forest filled with pools of water that act as portals to other worlds, including the worlds of Earth and Narnia. Charn is destroyed so utterly that when Jadis leaves its pool in the Wood, the pool dries to nothing.
While in the Wood, she appears to lose health, strength and magical ability. Through the reckless actions of Digory Kirke, and after briefly visiting Earth, Jadis is transported to the world of Narnia at its creation, and she immediately starts scheming to become its mistress. She eats the Fruit of Everlasting Life, acquiring immortality and her white-coloured skin; she then travels to the North to develop her magic anew, becoming the first of the "Northern Witches".
By the time of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, set 1,000 Narnian years after the events of The Magician's Nephew, Jadis has usurped power over Narnia, having magically forced the land into an "endless winter" during her reign, which as the book opens had lasted for 100 years.
The White Witch's Narnian minions include wolves, black dwarves, giants, werewolves, evil Tree Spirits, ghouls, boggles, ogres, minotaurs, cruels, hags, spectres, People of the Toadstools, incubi, wraiths, horrors, efreets, orknies, sprites, wooses, ettins, poisonous plant spirits, evil apes, giant bats, vultures, and creatures that according to C.S. Lewis are 'so horrible that if I told you, your parents probably wouldn't let you read this book.'
During her reign, the White Witch is styled "Her Imperial Majesty Jadis, Queen of Narnia, Chatelaine of Cair Paravel, Empress of the Lone Islands". She claims that she is a human from Earth (a "daughter of Eve"), for Aslan had given "sons of Adam and daughters of Eve" dominion over all the beasts and magical creatures of Narnia. (Narnian dwarfs are not considered to be human, even though they can and do reproduce with humans; they are called "Sons of Earth".)
Although the White Witch appears human (despite her irregular skin colour and abnormal height), Narnian rumour holds that she descends from Adam's first wife, Lilith, and was half-Jinn and half-giantess, and thus not even partially human. The Magician's Nephew, by contrast with this slander, recounts her origin on Charn; but whether the people of Charn are human is never addressed.
She is first mentioned in the story by Mr. Tumnus the faun, who befriends Lucy Pevensie and admits that he is in the pay of the witch, who has ordered him and indeed all other Narnians that if they ever see a human in Narnia they must hand it over to her.
Mr. Tumnus, who had never met a human before and hadn't known what they were like, soon realised that he couldn't find it in himself to hand Lucy over to the witch, and guided her back to the Lamp Post at Lantern Waste as she returned to her own world through the wardrobe.
Mr. Tumnus had told Lucy that the White Witch could turn people to stone, fearing that she would do the same to him if she found out he had met a human and not handed them over to her.
Shortly afterwards, Edmund goes into the wardrobe (following Lucy during a game of hide and seek) and encounters the Witch on her sleigh. She introduces herself as the Queen of Narnia and seduces him with a hot drink and Turkish Delight (enchanted to make it fatally addictive), and with the promise to make him Prince and eventually King of Narnia — provided he brings his siblings to visit her.
When Lucy finds Edmund and recounts her visit with Tumnus, Edmund realizes that the Queen and the Witch are one and the same, but for the chance of becoming King (and also for the promise of more Turkish Delight), he is still determined to bring his siblings to her. He keeps his meeting with the Witch a secret.
When the four Pevensie children arrive in Narnia, they find that the Witch has had Tumnus arrested for high treason — she had found out about him disobeying her orders. The Pevensie children are taken under protection of Mr. and Mrs. Beaver, who tell them more about the witch and how her reign is certain to be nearing its end now that Aslan is on the move.
They also tell the children that the Witch's castle is full of statues of Narnians that she has turned into stone for betraying her, and that few Narnians taken in there have ever come out again.
Edmund creeps out of their house to go and see the witch, who is furious that he has come alone, and even angrier when he tells her that Aslan is in Narnia. She sends Maugrim the wolf, chief of her secret police, to catch the children and the beavers at their house, but when Maugrim and another wolf get there they...
... have already left the house and started their journey to the Stone Table - Mr. Beaver had quickly established that Edmund had gone to the White Witch as he "had the look" of someone who had eaten her food and been told where she lives.
She makes Edmund come with her on their journey to the Stone Table, but after many miles of travelling her sleigh eventually becomes immovable the following morning as the snow melts and it becomes apparent that Aslan has destroyed her magical winter.
After walking a long distance, they stop in a valley and the Witch decides to kill Edmund; but he is saved just in time by Aslan's creatures, who return him to his siblings at the Stone Table. Edmund is repentant and grateful, having come to regret joining the Witch's cause; by the time she had turned a group of animals into stone for telling her that Father Christmas had come to Narnia, he had realised just how evil she was.
Since the White Witch was the first to rebel in Narnia, by the workings of the Deep Magic she is given ownership of all traitors and the right to kill them. The White Witch favors the Stone Table for her executions, and had intended to execute Edmund there until Aslan's presence made it impossible.
When the Pevensie children arrive in Narnia via Digory's magical wardrobe, it is explained to them by Mr. Beaver that, according to an ancient prophecy, when two sons of Adam and two daughters of Eve fill the four thrones at Cair Paravel as Kings and Queens of Narnia, the reign of the White Witch and the endless winter would end.
Jadis is aware of the prophecy, and employs spies to tell her of any human that comes to Narnia. She has turned many Narnians to stone for failing to follow her orders. While there are other humans in the world of Narnia at the time of the first book — humans descended from the original King Frank and Queen Helen populate Archenland, Calormen, and the island kingdoms — humans are completely unknown in occupied Narnia, to the extent that the Narnians think them mythological.
The White Witch's most notorious deed, aside from uttering the Deplorable Word that destroys Charn, is killing Aslan on the Stone Table (as a surrogate for Edmund), her right by the Deep Magic. Aslan returns to life by Deeper Magic, which states that death will be reversed if a willing victim who has committed no sin is slain on the table. In the subsequent battle, Aslan kills the witch, ending her reign of terror.
While Tilda Swinton is a great actress, she wasn't the white witch to me. She almost sounds disinterested when she delivers some of her lines. She just seems a bit emotionless rather than pure evil. A pity.
@BeanWayne She does. She has a lot of anger. She's angry with Mr. Tumnus, Aslan, the animals who say Father Christmas has been to visit them, etc. Almost all the interpretations of her have depicted her with anger and hatred. Tilda's interpretation is well acted, but she just isn't angry/evil enough to be the White Witch. It's just my view, though!
When Edmund "turned him in", she had just arrived and he was scared and confused. After that, she put on her nice face, and he wasn't aware of "turning anyone in".
How about you say that to Tumnus instead of dramatically looking at the floor because the script tells you to, you spineless plot sheep you? ;)
Believe me. Even the turkish delight without any spell makes you keep eating it over and over. I once sat in the living room, keep chewing and swallowing turkish delight until my mother ordered me to stop, eventually using Judo skill on me as I did not listen to her.
That applies to any fats, salts and sweets, though - chocolate, asalted peanuts, crackers... and as with all those things, it's actually possible NOT to be addicted to them.
Tried TD myself, found it nice but underwhelming after reading this book ;)
mmm im eating turkish delight right now... got it at a can dy store in maine and i figured it was only right to eat the rest of it while watching this
This somehwat spoils LOTR for me, when i now know that this little shit played Frodo in lotr the WHOLE TIME. Kiran Shah. Don't believe me? Look it up. Also weird that that he played in both movie adaptations for books by Tolkien and C.S Lewis, who were good friends i believe.
@Cutexiaogal THEY ARE NOT AS GOOD AS THIS MOVIE MAKES THEM LOOK. its like chewy jelly square coated with powder sugar. you'd be better off with chocolate. lol
I really love the way she played the White Witch, I've seen the made for tv BBC production and the animated version but I gotta say Tilda has made the best White Witch so far.
I was being sarcastic. However one wonders why an all powerful witch would even have any needs for sexual intercourse, especially since there's no HUMANS in Narnia, until the Pevensies turned up. Who is she going to have sex with, her creatures? Not to mention seeing as she sees herself as above everybody else I can't see how she would want to have anybody have the right to use her body to get pleasure FROM her.
That's how I know. Logical conclusions based on her personality.
No no, she very excites me! I think that the use of her body and reap the joy of this is the best we can be. But surely she wants. I certainly have sexual needs. My five cents. And what of the fact that there are no people in Narnia? Who is she going to have sex with, her creatures? I will answer you this question. Even if it is unique in its kind, it always can afford to take someone from a different species to be satisfied. Logical, no? For example Tumnus;-)
Well, she excited me too. A few days after seeing the movie I dreamt about Tilda Swinton, so I guess her character left a lasting impression on me. Was glad to see her in both the sequals too, if in a far smaller part.
Well, you're quite the kinky one aren't you? Nothing wrong with your imagination, that's for sure. :)
Just do not talk about Tilda Swinton, because my stomach is doing at the idea ofan actress. I am at the beginning I did not like it, I liked Susan, but now I love Jadis. You happy, and here I really have a problem! It is a pity that I have no penis, I would have raped her. And anyway, what a difference, and her I rape.;-)
I think I've always loved villainesses, especially if they are memorable. You don't need a penis to be able to rape. Btw, I thought girls were drawn to villains not villainesses. Hehe. Well whatever, I may have misunderstood you.
Actually I forgot she is called Jadis. She'll always be the White Witch to me. I wonder where C.S.Lewis found the inspiration to her? Maybe some strict teacher he had in school. Jadis is a word in french btw.
Jadis is a word of Persian language and means witch. I have to have his penis, so it was good ;-) I do not know how CS Lewis came up with it, but I love her. I wish really existed. I miss her and I need.
It also means "once upon a time" in French, but the Persian connection makes more sense. Aslan means lion in Turkish.
Jadis has a sister, which they never mention in the movie,and who is banished from the land.
Hm, I don't get you, do you need Edmund's penis or C.S.Lewis's (he's long dead btw, lol) to do Jadis?
We jokingly called a teacher in our school "Jadis". Most boys were attracted to her though. I saw a funny spoof of this scene in a British comedy series,TheYoungOnes
aha. no, well, all is well. she has a sister? I heard about some wicked witch of the same family as Jadis, but that it was her sister, I do not know, not written. I love her! And I want to mess around with her sex!!!
Alfred Hitchcock once said:"A film is only as good as the villain." He was right. Without Jadis the following Narnia movies weren't as interesting. I sort of rooted for her in the movie, because some of the "good guys" are a bit too sugarcoated or Disneyfied if you will.
I am funny? Maybe only on the Internet. In his private life very difficult for me, and it is not funny. That's why I miss the Jadis. You're right, without her movies are no longer interesting. I watched the third part of Narnia, and I'm bored. Narnia without Jadis is not Narnia. But I thought I'd you say I'm a lesbian.
@McLarenMercedes CS Lewis was inspired by the title character in She a book about a witch who gains everlasting life. Jadis and the character in She share some similar qualities. Also the Snow Queen from the famous fairy tale.
Not that this is a bad film, but I didn't care for this version much. I find the 1970's tv cartoon version much better. Tilda is an amazing actress, but... I find her Jadis flat.
why is the white witch better than aslan? in the 2nd movie, a deal with the white witch could have saved the narnians from the near-extinction that aslan allowed to nearly reach fruition. slavery is (and always has been) a step above death
@tonydevit The music is by Harry Gregson-Williams, and the Original Soundtrack is available for purchase. The music in this scene, however, is not on the commercial album. You'll have to download the complete soundtrack from the internet for that music. I found it three months ago and downloaded it, but I'm not sure exactly where to find it anymore.
That actually is the movie audio. And also, has anyone here read "the Magician's Nephew"? It is the prequel to this story; it says a few times that Jadis (The White Witch) IS very beautiful despite the fact she's so evil. So therefore, Tilda is SUPPOSED to look beautiful. When interviewed once, Tilda herself said she really hopes that a movie is made out of the prequel. It is perfectly normal for us men to find her attractive, that IS kinda the intent that Tilda& the film crew had in mind.
@VillainIsLemony unfortunately, it's not. It's only on the bootleg complete score, which is only available via downloading off of the internet. But it is a download worth doing. I love that music.
@dana123xena If u can get anything u want from the White Witch u gotta make the most of it. I'd be demanding to sleep with her in her bedroom, in her castle.....no protection :)
.Tilda Swinton, first choice for the role of Jadis the White Witch, hadn't read the book prior to filming. She wore platform shoes under costume to make her taller, and used a brace on her shoulders between takes to give her a break from the weight of her wig and crown.
.In the movie Edmund asks if the White Witch can make him taller. In fact, Skandar Keynes grew six and a half inches during the filming of this movie.
You are talking to me about Hagrid??? Man you should learn how to read!!! I wasn't talking about Hagrid. Someone else did! I was reacting on someone who obviously thought Tilda Swinton was in Lord of the Rings!!! You should read better before you react like that on somebody!!!!!
Why are you calling me weird guy......I was reacting on someone else and you are attacking me about Hagrid.......I never spoke about Hagrid. Who's the weird one here...........

JadisSvetlana09 9 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
Probably. Immortal witches are beyond the desires of mere mortals. My two cents.
McLarenMercedes 8 months ago
@McLarenMercedes
And how do you know? Or maybe she's not?
JadisSvetlana09 8 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
McLarenMercedes 8 months ago
No no, she very excites me! I think that the use of her body and reap the joy of this is the best we can be. But surely she wants. I certainly have sexual needs. My five cents. And what of the fact that there are no people in Narnia? Who is she going to have sex with, her creatures? I will answer you this question. Even if it is unique in its kind, it always can afford to take someone from a different species to be satisfied. Logical, no? For example Tumnus;-)
JadisSvetlana09 8 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
McLarenMercedes 8 months ago
@McLarenMercedes
JadisSvetlana09 8 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
McLarenMercedes 8 months ago
@McLarenMercedes
Jadis is a word of Persian language and means witch. I have to have his penis, so it was good ;-) I do not know how CS Lewis came up with it, but I love her. I wish really existed. I miss her and I need.
JadisSvetlana09 8 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
McLarenMercedes 8 months ago
@McLarenMercedes
aha. no, well, all is well. she has a sister? I heard about some wicked witch of the same family as Jadis, but that it was her sister, I do not know, not written. I love her! And I want to mess around with her sex!!!
JadisSvetlana09 8 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
Alfred Hitchcock once said:"A film is only as good as the villain." He was right. Without Jadis the following Narnia movies weren't as interesting. I sort of rooted for her in the movie, because some of the "good guys" are a bit too sugarcoated or Disneyfied if you will.
You're a funny girl. :)
McLarenMercedes 8 months ago
@McLarenMercedes
JadisSvetlana09 8 months ago
@JadisSvetlana09
third movie sucked >_> sooo different than the book.
Ghostgirl777 8 months ago
@McLarenMercedes CS Lewis was inspired by the title character in She a book about a witch who gains everlasting life. Jadis and the character in She share some similar qualities. Also the Snow Queen from the famous fairy tale.

DARKANGEL1698 1 year ago
Not that this is a bad film, but I didn't care for this version much. I find the 1970's tv cartoon version much better. Tilda is an amazing actress, but... I find her Jadis flat.
Wizard488 1 year ago
why is the white witch better than aslan? in the 2nd movie, a deal with the white witch could have saved the narnians from the near-extinction that aslan allowed to nearly reach fruition. slavery is (and always has been) a step above death

@tonydevit The music is by Harry Gregson-Williams, and the Original Soundtrack is available for purchase. The music in this scene, however, is not on the commercial album. You'll have to download the complete soundtrack from the internet for that music. I found it three months ago and downloaded it, but I'm not sure exactly where to find it anymore.

dana123xena 1 year ago

TRIVIA:
.Tilda Swinton, first choice for the role of Jadis the White Witch, hadn't read the book prior to filming.
