This brings back the days of being in the Navy, diving the wrecks and being around all those beautiful Island women. Too bad we all have to age but this music will keep you young. and drinking rum and eating the freshest fish in the world.
Not to mention the Island people being so damn nice. The world could take a few lessons from them.
hey this is Al Xandr the pannist featured in this video.. thanx for the positive respondses and letting you guys know that there has been improvements over the years .. will upload a new one soon.. and to the critics well the ones who know better i do agree the instrument was outta tune and i was playin too hard but i am concious about it and have rectified dem both so thanx for noticing lol much love though
Just thought I'd thank everyone for their comments and views... It's fun to see this video get the attention it has, even though I was just a spur of the moment decision to do it. I had trouble with the camera settings (it kept cutting out), the lighting was bad, and the sound was difficult... but it seems to capture the experience pretty well.
any chance you saw a cd of their music for sale at that time or happen to remember the name of the band this dudes solo is so out of controll awsome ive gotta get it on disk any help would be great thanks
Beautiful music, beautiful people. Just coming back from a trip in the Caribbean and I saw many of those bands. In St-Thomas, they have camp for children and teenagers who learn to play the instrument. I saw some of those young students playing in bands, they were great. I bought some CDs when I was there.
oh you misunderstood. i only have a guitar. a steeldrum is to expensive for me. well, my neighbours would kill me anyway, because i cant connect a headphone on steeldrum XD
Your grasp of the English language is immaculate, so please keep trying. As far as making steel pans go, I don't care if you believe me or not, but I learned how to make them from Dr. Erwin Mueller at Ball State University. Look him up. People will apprentice in the creation of steel pans for 10-15 years before they are even considered ready to work alone, so even if you find directions, I guarantee yours will sound like shit. As for your 'self made drum...' well, anyone can do that. Keller!
ACTUALLY they were discovered by accident in Trinidad and Tobago when a couple of realy angry villagers threw oil barrels into a huge fire (they were under british rule) and they started makin funny noises, so they pulled 'em out and played them. But 5olidsn4k3 is right. theres a certain method to make them sound certain ways.
Steel drums are so cool. Everytime I hear 'em I think of this fun educational game I played when I was a 4 year old and you were like, on some beach. Ahhh, memories.
does anyone know what this band is called..or know of any other steel drum bands?this music is wild!!!i remember when i was in bahamas they always played the steel drums
Hehehehe I remember THIS band all too well :P They were at the Orange Grove Hotel for my mother's wedding LOL! I even remember the youngest one was called Ivy HAHAHA! Oh good times good times! =D Thanks for uploading this! xoxo
Hey Mr Alexander You've got some chops on that lead - nice job. what's the name of this song? I'm not sure I could play naked stick style but your tuner must love you. Kida sounds like old time kaiso. Have you been down to St Vincent? You know Bryan Alexander or the Potential Steel players??
king u must not kno bout pan music...most of the song was played with jus sticks..witout rubber tat is...n plus there was not a gud audio fed...n he wasnt playin...jus fooling around
Ouch. The sound coming from that pan doesn't sound too good y'know. A long of 'waaaanggg' if you know what I mean? My steel drums sounds a lot purer than that. Maybe me and him just have varying style of playing *Shrugs*
I took a few photos of you guys at the Rex St. Lucian while I visited there in Nov. '04....you even showed me how you played while you were on break..great music....loved it...hope I'm talking to the same guys, lol!!

does anybody know hot to build that thing for real? all tries failed a bit :/
cmon i just wanna rock xD
5olidsn4ke 3 years ago
Cut the top from an old oil drum and hammer it into the shape and find the proper pitches for the pan. It's really a master's work, though.
mydrumsarebetter 3 years ago
and thats why asked if someone knows how to buidl it FOR REAL and not just what you just babbled.
i mean are there tools PROPER or tips on how to get the in the right shape
