@BloggerMusicMan In fact, DFW and Franzen were good friends, and Franzen spoke at David's funeral. You might be interested in an interview that Charlie Rose did with Jonathan Franzen, David Foster Wallace, and Mark Leyner together at one table back in 1996. They discuss the future of fiction in the information age.
Thanks a lot for making me aware of the interview.
Yeah, I saw a recent interview with Franzen talking about Wallace's suicide and how he had seen him the summer before when he got to such a dark state.
You have to write, quite literally, for your own amusement, and give no thought to anything outside of that. Just have a little fun with it, and that's enough.
@GMann43 the footage comes from "Le Conversazioni" 2006... a conference of sorts for writers in italy... not sure where to find all of the footage but a lot of clips are on youtube
Is that Jonathan Franzen at 1:02?
Getting two brilliant modern writers in one place is a great idea. I just wish one of them was still alive.

I wonder what that friendship would've been like.

I get the impression DFW had a crush on Zadie Smith.

his reference to a failure is telling to his mindset. His near catastrophic language of a simply slightly awkward situation.

Could you subtitle this video ?
I can understand the message but I can't understand how he says it.

Thank you so much for posting this. His death was such a massive loss to the world. It's a sadder place without him. :(
