ah he's just playing with her. so brilliantly cruel he's the best leporello I've seen yet: a cowardly don giovanni without the money or status. anyone seen any better?
I've always preferred the Mozart method to opera; great aria after great aria after great aria. No gimmicks, no tricks, no mediocrity. Just perfection in motion.
Why is leporello a basso buffo? I looked at the score and there aren't any low notes a baritone couldn't easily sing. Even the low F he sings closer to the end was written as a middle F in the score...at least in the one I saw.
@adamskyb He has to hit lower scores during others parts of the opera.
But even if the range of an aria is the same for a baritone and a bass (or other tpyes of voices) then the composer may had thought that it sounds better when a bass sings that. There are many people who believe that the higer the pitch (and the voice type) the better. Well I am not one of them.
@spyridon77 Oh I know I was just curious. I like bass voices the best myself. In fact I wish I was a bass who could sing down to low C lol...but alas I'm a baritone, most likely a lyric. I just love the bass repertoir so much. Ah well

Yeah, Ferruccio PLAYS very well but his singing isn´t really beautiful - it itsn´t warm or dark and graceful to touch my heart, sorry. For me its more important, that a singer SINGS better than he plays...good playing is for actors, not for singers...to find someone who can do both things is quite hard...René Pape is talented in both parameters and maybe some more but not Ferruccio Furlanetto, hes just a good actor, but no real good bass!
Oh childish Masetto! I really love how this Zerlina and Masetto look and sound so well together! Their costumes and their voices entwined, whether in argument or agreement fit wonderfully!
*shakes head* Can't imagine it either. His voice is too noble and dignified to make an appropriate Leporello. I heard Ramey singing "Madamina, il catalogo e questo" and it was like a pure-bred Dutch dog pretending (not very successfully) to be a mongrel. :)
Haha. On that note, have you (or has anyone) seen Furlanetto's Don Giovanni? I simply cannot imagine that, even though his voice is beautiful enough. I can't picture him without the Leporello-ish vulnerability and childlikeness...
Well, there is a "Don Carlos" video with him as King Philip of Spain. I haven't seen it myself but folks say he was great there, too. Even those who, like you, saw him only as Leporello.
D'Arcangelo is my favorite Leporello still singing the role, but Furlanetto was definitely something special. It was his best role, and in a totally different way than Ildebrando.
I realize that, thanks; I have other versions; but I really like this one and would like the DVD.

Mozart was a real genius. Each time I watch this Opera I smile and have fun.
And Leporello - Ferruccio Furlanetto is the best I've ever heard!

Many on youtube argue that Furlanetto's interpretations don't vary much from one performance to another. What do you think?
papagena92 2 years ago 2
I think he keeps the performances in the same vein, but he does them better. I believe perfection should go unchanged.

Correct - no other opera can compete with Don Giovanni - it is eternal.
Although I love nearly everything Mozart has created.

I think that he is the best Leporello ever!
And this is the most famous bass aria!
Only in 3:27 he could be a bit better. Actually, I have only seen (in youtube) Terfel to sing this part (3:26-3:29) to sing it perfectly.
5 stars ofcourse! And thank you elias for uploading a non-"rubbish modern Don Giovanni"!

when the singer sing at 4.00:"but his main passion is sated by the young and uninititiated" refer probably to mr Cav. Silvio Berlusconi, italian p.m.
