This is true Bel Canto, the voice is placed, perfection, even the low notes are not in the chest and the high notes are not in the trhoat. This where it belongs, that is why sounds like that, like a Laser, in Maschera, supported. her teacher was Mercedes Llopart, my teacher's teacher. No many teachers in the world know how to teach this technique anymore, specially in the USA. Bravissima! saw her live a few times.
@olartetenor Thank you for this interesting observation. She did have such a perfectly even voice, bottom to top, true legato. I did not know that this was the result of her teacher.
She was a force of nature. Amazing, huge voice, not lush and velvety like Simionato, but bright and steady as a laser, with a rock solid technique that allowed her to sing any style, from the super dramatic to supple, florid bel canto. One of the truly great Italian mezzos.
That's a perfect description of her voice -- "bright and steady as a laser", as opposed to Simionato's "lush and velvety." I truly regret never having heard her live.
she was a perfect Amneris...Brava!
