Good question. I think he knows the instrument/himself so well that he can honestly express himself using the guitar notewise within the context of any song. Then he skillfully uses effects/amplifier to create really tasteful sound textures-all his own. He is identifiable when he plays. Most can't say that. Plus he's got perfect rhythmic phrasing.

Went to see Robin Trower open for Frampton about 15 years ago, not expecting to stick around for Frampton's cheezey rock. A friend convinced me to stay and I'm glad I did. Best show I've seen in my life (next to Merle Haggard) and Frampton blew Trower away. Peter is AMAZING.
