Love how John Candy gasps for air mid sentence...and then misses the downbeat coming back in on the drums at 1:35. Hilarious, and the perfect representation of pre-tean awkwardness!
I never knew that Rick Moranis played the guitar or that John Candy played the drums. I knew that Rick was a southpaw from his Ghostbuster and Honey I Shunk The Kids movies, but not a guitar player. Maybe he could have been Canada's verson of Jimi Hendrix if he had stuck with it. This is a good cover of this song and by a comedy act at that.
@robbiestewart89 What's so cool is that Rick is actually playing the guitar "backwards". In other words the guitar wasn't re-strung to adapt to Rick's needs.
That's b cause some southpaws don't restring their guitars what right-handers call backwards mostly b cause it takes 2 much time 2 do so, so they take a right-handed guitar and learn how 2 play it backwards 2 southpaw style, much like the late Jeff Healy used 2 play his on his lap. The late Albert King, who was 1 of Stevie Ray Vaughan's idol also played his this way and they even recorded a session 2 gether 4 a candian tv station back in '83 called In Session
Lots of left handed players have learned how to play on right handed instruments that they flipped over without reversing the strings. Then, when they start play guitars that were designed to be left handed instruments, they have to reverse the strings. It looks like Rick actually had some experience with the guitar before this skit. So I'm guessing that's how he learned how to play. Hell, that might even be his personal guitar he's playing in that clip.
Great memories!!! I loved that show! God bless John Candy, he left us too soon!! There was soooo much more to laugh at but a BIG thanks for what we have! VERY FUNNY!!!!
I used to stay up till 12.30 on Fridays to watch this on NBC (I liked it lots better than Sat Night Live). I loved Pre-Teen World. Does anyone remember the name of the kid Eugene Levy played? He was hilarious.
Just to clear up the left-handed thing -- back in the day, southpaws generally had to learn their chords upside-down. That's what Rick's doing here ...
Eventually, we'd buy a guitar, file out the heavy-string grooves, and play "normally."
But Jimi -- didn't matter much to him. You can see him playing upside-down, or with a "rightie" strung left. Wasn't a strummer anyway, and his hands were bigger than most peoples' feet. Jimi was Jimi .
Rick Moranis's left-handed guitar is upside down...lol. It looks like he's actually playing it; so I guess he just strung the strings in reverse order.
love this! watch it at least twice a month..I wish they had a bunch of little girl dancing and screaming around them like they were all dream boats...LOL

@fredhetz Your probably right. I was about 16 or so years old when The Midnight Special was cancelled and I remember SCTV started coming on Friday nights. From time to time over the years NBC would run a late night half hour SCTV episode. Just recently PBS ran a special on SCTV during a pledge drive but I missed it.

Nice Teeth, too.
BettyVanSneeIV 1 year ago
Rick Moranis is Left-Handed. You see left handed guitarists do 3 different things.
1 - play the guitar upside down like Rick M. is doing here, but re-string the guitar so the Big E is on the top. (Jimmy Hendrix)
2 - Get a left handed guitar.
3- Play the guitar Upside Down and change nothing like Rick M. Is doing here. This last way has always amazed me. If you play guitar you know why.
Left-Handers have it hard growing up in right handed world but they end up being more flexible.
TubeScrewed 1 year ago
