I love Queens performance at Liva Aid, loved Freddy. But always thought that Midge stole the show, followed by Sade (bloody close call). Two very very good voices, wasted on pop in a way, but thank God they chose it.
Yes is really a great performance: beautiful song, beautiful lyrics, and the voice of Midge Ure is very intense and touching... But sure this is not the best vocal performance ever... Have you listen Freddie Mercury in this show? His voice gives thrills... His scream when he's playing with the audience is wonderful...
See their video Ultravox Live Aid 1/2 to the right, and it's a near flawless performance. For some reason, the guy who uploaded the video disabled the comments, so it doesnt even allow people to express the greatness of that performance.
I saw Midge live solo at Motherwell Concert Hall, just miles from his home, and was extremely impressed by his voice...I've been to many live concerts, and there is not a male voice has struck me like his did....straight to the soul. Very powerful voice.
If you have the ability to hear ,Ultravox is a very nice nameing and sounding band which should never be forgotten as they have a even sinister kind of sound, but good at the same time, thank's.
As a singer myself (alto 1, soprano 2 when needed) I used to practice to Ultravox (key changed acordingly) and others, many great songs not sung correctly would go flat flat and flat. This is one of them. I didn't always get it right at first. Family cringe. This live set is amazing, notice the instuments are off key here and there but Midge is spot on.
I thought Ultravox would suck live because a lot of bands that do that type of synth music usually do but Midge Ure just knocked it out of the park. If Freddie Mercury hadn't shown up, this might be the most remembered performance.
had a choice between the london show and the philly show. picked the london show never ever have i regretted it in all these years. the bands (all of them ) were brilliant. but u-vox was the best by far.
Such an extraordinary voice. Midge Ure comes from an incredibly high class of talent that unfortunately doesn't exist anymore. In an age where autotune substitutes range and legitimate technique, and state-of-the-art studio wizardry replaces true musicianship, it's quite refreshing to be able to look to the past whenever REAL (I mean that literally) music existed. If only we had talent like that nowadays.
And the way in which he used his body to create that perfection was equally amazing. The second time he sang the chorus you visibly see him take a huge breath at the onset and then as he reaches the end he raises his arms which in turn lifts his lungs up from his diaphragm, creating more space. This is a technique practiced by only the best vocalists. Bow to the master we all must. :-)
@knewyawkr; I hear you're a vocalist. At least judged from the way you analyzed Midge's singing technique. I am a vocalist too. Indeed, there are two ways of hitting a note like that; the one you described where you lift your arms and open up your body cavities to allow maximum air intake and using your body as a resonance box, or bending forwards with your elbows out to open up and force yourself to hit higher notes.
@knewyawkr You can often see e.g. Céline Dion fold her entire body when trying to hit her highest notes. God, I love it when I meet people like you who know what they're talking about :D
I doubt he was thinking about his diaphragm when he raised hi arms...or that he was trying to create space...obviously he was just caught up in the song and the moment given the awesome gravity of the event itself and why he was there. Don't think there is any need for a clinical breakdown of a performance like this...kind of detracts from what was created on the stage.
This is like the epitome of awesome. So beautifully haunting. Definitely one of the best vocal performances of all time, and THE SINGLE most awesome performance at this concert. Epic. I bow to the master.
This is such a hard song to sing live, going from talking to almost shouting (but not shouting) whilst keeping note perfect. Gotta love that drum machine :)
It was my second favourite performance of the concert (behind Queen - Radio Ga Ga) 70,000 people all singing and doing the actions simultaneously to Freddie is unbelievable.
Would of been amazing to have seen this concert (even if it was just watching at home on the TV) but I wasn't born lol
Midge Ure got cheated. Aparently Princess Diana had to leave the concert at 2pm and Midge was due on stage at like 1:40 cos he really wanted to perform for her... But only Bob Geldoff knew she had to leave, so he gave Midge some bullshit excuse about 'technical problems' so he could go on stage at 1:40 instead. And Midge didnt get on still 2:15
Fantastic. One of the most haunting melodies ever composed, and an incredible performance. That was note perfect - with no soundchecks or anything. Respect.
amazing

Ultravox are good, but Queen were the best that day. No other man on earth could get the crowd going like Freddie did.
Midge Ure, what a fucking voice though!
OHHHHH VIEENNNNNNNNAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!

That was freaking amazing. I don't understand why the crowd dont just go CRAZY after that.
Beautiful melody and with no soundcheck? Brave man. More than pulled it off though!! <3

"Ready?" Yes, I know the song, as most people would here, and realise the big vocal is coming up.
Was it too much to ask that you leave the video alone and let Midge carry it?
