Toshiba Portege R500 Review

So sick of reviewers saying that having an optical drive on a portable is a good thing!!! What a huge friggin waste of space, weight, battery and money when there are so many better options!!! Anything that comes on a CD, such as drivers, music, Operating Systems etc, I can just download or get on a USB! Don't waste all that space, weight and power on such a relic technology which could be put to far greater uses.

I purchased the Toshiba 160 Gb HD and 2 GB memory with optical drive. The screen is atrocious - with a very narrow viewing angles and lots of light leakage around the edges so the image is faded. You cannot watch a video on it - especially in dark conditions because of the uneven lighting. The keyboard is the nosiest I have ever heard and bends with each key stroke with a very poor feed back. It takes 5 mins to boot up and will not properly shut down and the battery lasts about 40 mins. AVOID

No not at all. Mexico makes bad circuit boards. They made for Zenith TVs for years and they were real shit. If you have a Zenith anything and the circuit board says made in Mexico it will fail. And also I think Phillps has a problem with DVD players also. Real cheep crap inside. And it's just getting worse. The Govenment is not doing anything to stop this ripoff. So companys just do what they want.

This is the most informative review that I have seen, and it gives a real feel for what the machine is like.

I would really love it you could stick in an Ubuntu (or Debian) Linux CD and see if everything works (such as suspend to RAM etc.).

This will be my next laptop (although I think I will wait for the SSD hard-drive version in August).
