i cant say about the77 model, but i owned and RODE THE PISS OUTTA my 1975 cr 125 Elsinore, and 1974 cr250 Elsinore and loved every minute of them both! Rite outta the box in 1975 my 125 was" the" badest bike around!! (except for the god awful bogging/flooding) but seriously there was nothing faster! end of discussion!
I built one of those too, and sold it asap. They look great and ride like - crap. And that's being nice. Those bikes are great to look at, and terrible to ride. Junk. I've had several, so don't bother with the argument.
@MegaBartSmart Marty rode a factory ride, and one was claimed by another rider only one time I believe. The bike was worth 50,000$ at the time. Hand carved Italian Marazuchi? Front tubes, Right hand chain set up and about 11-1/2 travel all the way around. I saw a video on one once and the neat thing was the gas tank extension that was hidden behind one number plate. A beautiful piece of engineering. At the time no non-metal gas tanks were allowed when racing, due to fire hazard. RH DSD
@MegaBartSmart Before he got the Factory Honda Ride he rode FMF Elsinore 125cc Bikes. Then actually in 1977 he went back to racing on a FMF Modified Honda Elsinore 125.
Awesome bike! I had a 1975..great bikes, these are legendary... Note for fixing the gassing on these bikes dial in the carburetor needle etc... and will also get rid of the bogged effect. The acceleration is awesome, I did it on mine. From a former motocross racer..
I forgot to mencion, the gassin on the eslinores was very tricki lot of people did not like them, or did no accept , I did love them, I was born in love woth hondas. made in japan 100%
Awesome upload, it's the Internet which means here today gone tomorrow so hell yes I copied this vid to all four of my hard drives you better cause you know once the music company sees it they're going to delete it due to copyright infringement that's life on YouTube. Thanks for sharing.
@disyokerr Ihad one in 77 the bikes were pretty much unchanged since 73. A 77 Sachs enduro engine with 17hp had more power in 77, by 78 KX was kicking out 23hp, by 81 watercooled RM was 31hp almost double CR's 4 years earlier.
@jhareng yes but Cr 125 Elsinore, had older gear box, with more desplacement and high final speed than RM water cooled, Rm was beteer in track with taff hills, but in flat Honda kick them all, but thing of honda was when got hot ...Done And I talkiing about 5 year diference tecnologies. CR 1981 was better suspecion, better drive, muchu nicer line, and long life engine as usual in Honda
@disyokerr Cant see how you can call them bullet proof, they littered the side of the tracks having seized up in 76 and 77 when past sell by date. Used to hate em gassing up.
78 CR cant remember seeing one nationally.
The suspension wasnt hard to improve either, any one any good got rid of those rear shocks up to 81.
Not forgetting these were the company that put a massive front wheel on in 79 that most changed.
All bikes have their own period the above CR was 73 to 76.
@thehappyinsomniac Well is hard to me to explain something, tha happeng more tahn 28 year ago, but bullet proff to me was, I had YZ RM,at same time, and my elsinores, only change tires oil, brakes, and ring and pistons, when I had chane 3 times suzukis and yamaha rings, Honda elsinore stil running fast wiht the same rings, I have to accept tha rear supencion was horrible, but again is was 78 , and YZ and RM war 1982...I not compare with hondas 82 ,Much better. cheers.
THANK YOU, THANK YOU!! I had a 77 CR125 & i copied Marty Smiths decals exactly the same way. I was a kid looking of a hero. What a great flashback Thanks again.
I want to see you guys build a clean bike like that and then go see how it looks after a couple of motos . Also is that a plastic gastank or a real one?
you guys aren't too savvy about this bike,I see. This is a custom built never was sold by Honda.Scott Steiger builds these. He also does a Marty Smith Replica that he sells, each one autographed by Marty himself. You guys really need to catch up with the vintage MX scene these days.I'm 51 & have been racing it for the past 5 years.have a 76 KX125A3 for vintage class& a ;77 Bultaco 370 Pursang for post vintage class.
hi peoples im about to be 17 and get my first dirt bike its a piece of shit but my dad is going to buy the parts and we are going to rebuild everything and i was wondering if anyone could tell me if a 1979 Honda MR50 is a good starter bike
Depending on your size, an MR50 would be kind of small. I would recommend an XR75, 80, 100 if you have never ridden before. Oh and MR50's were made 2 years 74 and 75.
sweet bike but does anyone know how to tell what year elsinores are. Theres one forsale for 300 by my house that needs a clutch and number plates and some other little things hes says its a 1976 its silver and has blue on top of the tank i think its a mt125 or what ever tho :/
Dont get me wrong but when the 76 yz 125 x came out the Elsinore could not hang anymore in the power dept.I rode both Yam and Honda new and it was a night and day difference.BUT I still think the Elsinore is still more desirable for a collector.
man that sure brings back a lot of good memories. i had one just like this when i was 14, had the porcupine head, fmf down pipe, redline swing arm, third stage porting and metzeler tires. i loved that bike :)
great job Scott.

Did those chain guards even do anything back then? Looks like that could throw a chain so easy.
ahsure 1 year ago
@ahsure Fairly sure it was late 77 or 78 race governing bodies made riders fit a chain guard so fingers couldnt go in to sprocket.
They never threw a chain but a lot seized up littering the sides of the tracks, mine went twice.

Go with a newer bike. Older bikes have major problems. go like 1996- oh 2005. 2strokes with powerbands are not good starter bikes. go 4 stroke
